Update: our polled readers were too optimistic, though in their defense, it would've been hard to predict the late start time in advance. Elementary averaged 20.8 million viewers.
The timeslot immediately following the Super Bowl has in recent years been used to either premiere a new show, give a sampling boost to an existing relatively new show, or just reap the bonus advertising revenue from an already well performing veteran.
This year, CBS has slated Elementary to follow the big game, its only freshman scripted show that seems likely to survive the season.
Last year, NBC went with The Voice after the Super Bowl, and it averaged a very nice 37.61 million viewers.
What do you think the viewership of Elementary following the Super Bowl will be and why?

For comparison, here are the historical Super Bowl ratings themselves.

I haven’t watched a show after the Super Bowl since The Simpsons in 2004. I usually turn to Sportscenter after the game.
Elementary is a slow-paced hourlong procedural. By the time the game ends most people have spent hours and hours in front of the TV and are tapped on and want something fast paced and easy to follow, like a competition show.
In the case of Alias, yes, it started absurdly late. I never watched that show, but I figured I’d give it a try since post-SB shows tend to do something big, and the after game went on foreeeeeeeeever. According to this article, the show didn’t start until 11:01 PM Eastern, which is ridiculous for a Sunday night when people have already been watching TV most of the day:

@Bill Why ABC doesn’t air the Superbowl anymore???
Elementary will definitely hit a series high with about 20-30 million viewers but it might go back to the series average viewers after the next or so episodes like Glee, or it can be like Grey’s Anatomy. GA got 37 million views than had 20-25 million views for the rest if the season.
Why ABC doesn’t air the Superbowl anymore???
‘cuz ABC ain’t got no NFL games
@Kenny wtf are you talking about? POI gets a 3.2 and then Elementary drops to a 2.2 how exactly is that POI’s fault? Maybe people are just not interested in it like me. I tune in to watch POI and once its over I turn the channel.
I turn the channel to watch Scandal maybe that’s why the ratings drop so bad
It will rate “BIG” and it will rate pretty good for several weeks before it finally settles to its pre-super bowl numbers.
I forgot to mention that POI would rate better all around than Elementary.
Glee got 26M..so elementary should get at least 32+M
I think it’s a bad fit with the Super Bowl. You want something frothy and fun with broad appeal, not a dull procedural.
I (unexpeectedly) watched The Voice last year, I doubt I will be watching Elementary this year.
Let me see:
Super Bowl blowout. Check.
Power outage delays ending of Super Bowl until after most on the East Coast are asleep. Check.
It can’t be, oh, but it is. BINGO!
If a primetime show is shown outside of primetime, does it still count in the primetime ratings?
“If a primetime show is shown outside of primetime, does it still count in the primetime ratings?”
No. It isn’t part of the network’s primetime ratings average for that night or the season.
