My only comment about GH is that ABC and the producers are behaving stupidly (shocker, I know) when it comes to the OLTL characters. Does GH think that it will collapse if John McBain, Todd Manning and Starr Manning are absent for a few months? Give me a break. At least Michael Easton can conceivably play his old character from “Port Charles” (perhaps have some people do double-takes when they encounter him), but doesn’t having Roger Howarth and Kristen Alderson play new characters all but rule out the old OLTL characters ever returning? I know we must check our brains at the door when watching soap operas, but this is ridiculous.

  • David

@JayTN how is this situation the producers fault. The characters belong to Prospect Park, the actors are under contract to ABC. If Prospect Park will not allow the characters be used then the only choice is to have them become other characters.

How is it ridiculous, these actors relocated to the west coast some of them even buying new homes, should ABC just fire them or force them to go back to Prospect Park, making them relocate again. If anyone is behaving stupidly it is Prospect Park. People will not like recasts in those roles but honestly I don’t see the whole Prospect Park thing lasting more than a few months unless they get some sort of cable or syndication deal to air the shows.

As for other comments about Sabrina not bringing in ratings, there is a lot of people looking forward to her transformation that may or may not happen.

I also wonder where people are getting that Jackie Zeman is only back for 3 episodes? The only thing Ive seen from her is she is returning nothing about it only being for 3 episodes so sources people.

Nice to see ABC pushing Genie Francis’s return so hard. Very excited for this next week. Her Kin Shriner both back along with the other recent returns should see the ratings go up even more than the have been.

The producers are doing a great job, way to go Frank and Ron. And of course the case and crew at GH. On FIRE

While I am enjoying seeing all the GH vets I’m a bit disturbed that they really have no frontburner storylines and just pop up once a week (sometimes less ala Monica) and appear to be used as mere window dressing. Remember the old saying that too much of a good thing is just too much? Let’s not turn this into Geriatric Hospital and lose that all important younger ratings group.

  • jonboyelk

OT: how is it that Tracey Bregman (Lauren, Y&R) looks hotter now than she did 20 years ago? If she’s had stuff done they’d all better go to her doctor cos she doesn’t have that tight scary botox look at all.

  • Jeff

This is from Soap Opera Digest.com who broke the story about Bobbie coming back:

Then yesterday he called with, ‘Okay, we have three shows with firm dates for you!’ It was a complete shock that I had firm shows booked. I knew the 50th [anniversary] was coming up. And I thought, ‘Maybe there’s going to be something there, because it seems in everybody else’s minds that it seems like a perfectly natural thing.”

I think fans are pretty divided on Sabrina, and I am sure if she was axed, the show’s ratings would not be impacted. Of all my friends and family that watch GH, no one gives a crap about her or her “transformation”. Imagine instead of her non-sense if there was an Elizabeth, Patrick, Britt triangle. Or maybe even Olivia, Patrick, Britt. Right now you have two marginal characters that people are pretty divided on with a man whose wife is alive and pops up every few months to remind us she is alive, and what we all want is for Robin and Patrick to reunite. Let’s be real, if Robin came back, would anyone want Patrick to choose Sabrina or Britt over Robin? But, imagine it’s 6 months from now, and he and Elizabeth are hot and heavy, and then Robin comes back. Could make for much more interesting drama because the fans LOVE Elizabeth, who like Robin, we watched grow up on GH, Elizabeth and Robin were great friends, Robin picked Elizabeth to be with Patrick. In the meantime, Britt going to battle with a character the fans love makes for a much better set-up than Britt vs. Ugly Betty.

@JayTN– I agree– the show also would do fine without the three OLTL short-term or permanently. I believe good storytelling, along with good production values, and great acting has been what is bumping up the ratings, and maybe most importantly, actually honoring GH’s very rich history (something JFP didn’t give 2 craps about). I don’t think any one loss or gain will sink or raise ratings, but consistent storytelling with great actors will keep them rising.

And, overall, my one complaint with Frank and Ron from OLTL and here on GH is they do overcrowd the show, many times with characters that are favorites to them but not the audience. They usually serve a purpose, but the show could certainly do without them. However, with budgets in mind, I am sure paying for 5 shows with Sabrina = 1 show of Laura or Robert or Anna or Luke. I understand it’s not a perfect world. Frank and Ron just need to strike a balance and cut someone loose when they aren’t really serving a bigger purpose.

  • David

@Jeff The problem with just axing the actors is they have a contract and they would have to honor the reminder of the contract. So they should pay the actors and not use them. Doesn’t seem like good business sense to me

@jon the vets like Lucy and Anna and upcoming laura all have had, have, or will be having big storylines. The show is doing a great job of mixing the old with the new.

I just don’t get people they either are mad that they aren’t using the veterans or they make comments like don’t make geriatric hospital. The veterans have proved to be ratings draws as have some of the new characters not all. Ultimately it is the storylines that I feel drive the ratings.

  • JayTN

David…how is the OLTL character soap opera NOT the GH producers and ABC’s fault? For starters, the network knew that Prospect Park had the rights to the characters when they were placed on GH (with the reported consent of Prospect Park). It seems to me that a much better solution would be for the characters and actors to temporarily move back to OLTL and then resume on GH after the Prospect Park soaps are up and running. This way, GH and ABC have all but guaranteed that Todd and Starr Manning will never appear on GH again (not that I care, as I don’t really much care for either character).

As far as contracts go, they can be gotten out of. Although it is a primetime series, do you think that if “Two and a Half Men” co-star Angus T. Jones really wanted off of the sitcom, producers would not oblige him? I believe series producer Chuck Lorre publicly said as much. Blaming contracts is really not addressing the issue that ABC could have solved the problem but apparently had no interest in doing so.

Unlike some people on this board – and it may upset some people, but I am not apologizing – I do not think that either Frank Valentini or Ron Carlivati are saints and are infallible. In this case I continue to lay the blame for the whole OLTL character debacle at their doorstep, and on the network. After all, it was Valentini and Carlivati that allowed the OLTL characters to become such a big part of GH in the first place.

  • Mike

What has always been posted on soap opera sites and even published in Soap Opera Digest years ago is that all daytime contracts favor the shows in regards to actors. They can fire any actor after 13 week cycles without it costing the show anything. The only thing in the actors favor is that daytime contracts have guarantees for the actor. Such as Eileen Fulton or one of the vets on ATWT had a very small guarantee of about 1 show a week. Even if the show didn’t use her they had to pay her for one show every week. Other vets have higher guarantees. If the show doesn’t use them they only have to pay for that guaranteed amount of shows.

If an actor is on recurring, they have no contract, no benefits, no guarantees and only get paid when they are used.

To the ratings so far only seen one press release for daytime (network). ABC didn’t even mention GH in their release this week. That is the first time since maybe October or November. Haven’t seen one this week for NBC or CBS daytime at all.

  • David

@JayTN it is not their fault. This is Prospect Park’s fault. They are demanding the characters back they are the only ones to blame in this. But your hatred towards the GH producer and writer blinds you to that facrt so I will not discuss this any further with you.

Before it was the ratings haven’t improved. Now that the ratings have turned around and the network is behind haters like you, Richard and others loook for other things to attack at the producers and writers so whatever.

Prospect park is the one causing the issue. The actors are under contract to ABC, and have relocated to the west coast. They should not be forced to relocate back to the east coast for an internet series that probably will last a few months top.

GH is on fire to you haters like JayTN deal with it. Now go ahead come back and hate some mroe so I can laugh at you while the GH ratings continue to grow.

  • David

@Mike or should I say Richard nice to see you again! Show me where it says the former OLTL now GH actors that portray Starr, Todd, and Mcbain have in their contract that they can be fired after 13 weeks. Show me where you have viewed their contract that says they will only get paid certain amount of episodes if they are not used. I would love to know where we can read the ABC contracts of their daytime actors

  • JayTN

David…cry me a river with your crocodile tears. Your hatred towards Prospect Park and your kissing Valentini and Carlivati’s a@@ blinds you to that FACT so I will not discuss this any further with you.

Actually, Prospect Park has the rights to the characters, not ABC. So how is this their fault, when they are merely asking for what is rightfully theirs? Oh, yeah…because you worship at the alter of Valentini and Carlivati.

The only phrase more annoying than “hater”, which is now anyone who disagrees with you is the phrase “on fire”. I don’t think David has ever said anything remotely intelligent or factual since he disgraced this site with his presence…now go put your head back up Carlivati and Valentini’s rear ends and maybe they will make your day and ask you to the prom!

  • JayTN

Here we go again with pathetic David demanding “proof” or “sources”, yet he doesn’t back up any of his own baseless claims, such as Prospect Park causing the whole GH/OLTL mess.

David, show me where anyone with any credibility – and I don’t mean you or your girlfriend Lennay Kekua – is blaming Prospect Park for the OLTL characters issue. Furthermore, I would like some proof that you are not some deranged middle aged man living at home in his mother’s basement with posters of Calvin Klein underwear models (and Carlivati and Valentini) on the wall and writing fan fiction for GH, OLTL, and “Twilight”.

  • David

YAWNNNNNNNNNNNN JAYTN YAWNNNNNNNNNNNNN Prospect Park owns the rights to the chracters. I never said they shouldn’t get them back. I said the actors being on GH in different roles is well within GH’s rights since the actors are under contract to the network. But as usual you only read what you want to read hater boy! I am guessing you have an issue with homosexual thus your attacks on me and Frank and Ron. so you are GH hater and a gay basher

  • David

And again my original question why should the actors who bought new homes on the west coast be forced to go back to the east coast to help prospect park? Prospect Park screwed the actors over by not launching a year ago so why do the actors owe them anything?

  • JayTN

David…I actually don’t have a problem with gay people, as I have an uncle and a cousin who are gay. What I have a problem with is stupid hypocrites such as yourself. You are the one making baseless claims and refuse to back them up with anything other than your own opinion yet you harp on everyone else to provide sources and footnotes.

You said that it was Prospect Park’s fault that GH was having to lose its OLTL characters. Yet, who brought those characters over to GH to begin with. Perhaps Prospect Park allowed these characters to be used temporarily, but it was GH that took it farther and expanded the roles of the characters beyond simply guest starring or recurring. I don’t know the details of the issue – and neither do you – but this scenario could very easily have happened, hence Prospect Park’s insistence that the characters be returned to them.

Another thing that irritates me about slime like you is playing the “gay card”. I do not care one bit who Frank Valentini or Ron Carlivati decide to sleep with, whether it be male, female, or transgender. That is their own private business. If someone does not like Carlivati’s writing or Valentini’s producing, you brand them as some sort of “gay basher” or “bigot”. I base my criticism on their body of work, not the body laying in bed beside them…you are either too stupid to realize that or you’re just hiding behind their orientation to discourage people from criticizing them.

Furthermore, an actor goes where the jobs are. It is not the responsibility of a network or a production company to supply them with a place to live. If you are an actor and buy a house in California but cannot find any acting gigs, do you change professions or sell your house and move to NYC or some place else to find work? Where was your righteous indignation when ABC “forced” AMC actors to move to California and how about “forcing” those OLTL actors to move with their characters to the California based GH?

It is laughable – but, I guess people are always laughing at you instead of with you – that you accuse me of being blinded by hate for Carlivati and Valentini when you are constantly making excuses for them and blaming everyone else for problems that they created…remember it was these two messiahs who brought the OLTL characters to GH in the first place.

Now go ahead and cry more tears and call me a “hater” of one thing or another, that seems to be all you are good at, because it certainly isn’t making a point and backing it up with reason or intelligence.

  • David

YAWNNNNNNNNNNN GAY BASHER JAYTN YAWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN you make no points other other than you consider to try and make Frank/Ron look bad and throw insults at me.

I am done have no time to discuss issues with a gay basher but kept it up I am sure your Momma is proud

  • David

Oh remember it was PROSPECT PARK who screwed over the actors by not relaunching the shows a year ago. I suppose in your mind these actors should have sat home and did nothing for that year. Double standards you hold Gay Basher JayTN

  • Jeff

Not to get in the middle of this entertainment, but personally, I think PP and GH/ABC are both at fault, and the actors (and fans) are the ones caught in the middle. I am sure when PP failed, FV/RC/ABC thought that it was over and why not use the OLTL characters/actors. Now that it’s coming back, I think PP is silly for thinking recasting those 3 roles is the right thing to do, as that is not how to launch OLTL with recasts of 3 major roles and making ABC stop using the characters. I would think a compromise should have been able to be reached, giving the actors a chance, if they would go (but ABC could have really made it worth their time to go), to go start OLTL with PP, wrap up stories in 2-3 months, then rejoin ABC and GH. It would be a win for PP, a win for GH/ABC, and a win for fans of OLTL, GH, or fans of both. This is now, in my opinion, a disaster. Recasting those 3 roles will not help OLTL at all. They would be better off just writing the show without them. Having the 3 actors all come back as someone else on GH is stupid. I’m sorry, but just give them the boot, and they would obviously be wanted by PP for OLTL at the very least. Actor jobs come and go for tons of reasons– it’s business. And, it would give a lot of money to the budget for vets who fans love to have more of a story, and I really don’t see how them leaving out impact the ratings.

Having said all of that, since none of us are privy to any real info as to why a compromise wasn’t reached, all the details of the contracts, the agreements between PP and ABC, etc, etc, we can all have opinions, and we will all just deal with whatever happens because of the whole fiasco.

  • David

@Jeff I agree some sort of compromise should have been worked out. I am not sure why Prospect Park thinks recasting the characters is a good thing. I don’t think having the actors play different characters on GH is necessarily a good thing either but it seems they are at an impasse and are left with no choice.

I see this hurting Prospect Park more than GH because as you said recasting those popular roles is not going to go over well with the fans.

  • JayTN

Jeff…that is what I said in my original post, that ABC – if it wanted to – could have forged some kind of agreement with Prospect Park. This way, there are no winners. Prospect Park has to recast three roles. GH and ABC has to find three new roles for existing actors. There is enough blame to go around, but the ultimate blame still rests with GH, as it was the one who brought these characters back…characters that they did not own.

Unfortunately, that argument was lost after it was twisted around by stupid David. Before David even replies, let me sum up what he will say, let me paraphrase, he’ll call me a “hater” and throw in “gay basher” for good measure. Neither term applies to me, but “stupid”, “idiot”, and “brain dead” do apply to David.
