TV Ratings Thursday: 'The Big Bang Theory' & 'American Idol' Fall, '30 Rock' Finale Rises + 'Do No Harm' Flops

CBS won the night in adults 18-49 and in Total Viewers.

On FOX, American Idol  earned a 4.5, down seven tenths from last week's 5.2 adults 18-49 rating. Glee scored a 2.1, down half a ratings point from last week's 2.6

On CBS, The Big Bang Theory notched a 5.3, down a full point and a tenth after its last original's series high 6.4 adults 18-49 rating. Two and a Half Men earned a 3.9, down three tenths from its last original's 4.2. Person of Interest earned a 3.2, down a single tenth from its last original's 3.3 adults 18-49 rating. Elementary notched a 2.2, down two tenths from its last original's 2.4 adults 18-49 rating.

On ABC, Grey's Anatomy notched a 2.8, down two tenths from last week's 3.0 adults 18-49 rating. Scandal earned a 2.7, up a tenth from its last original's 2.6 two weeks ago.

On NBC the series finale of 30 Rock earned a 1.9, up half a ratings point from last week's 1.4 adults 18-49 rating and the series' best rating since March 2012. The Office garnered a 2.1 at 9PM and 1.9 at 9:30PM with the latter down a tenth after last week's 2.0 among adults 18-49. The premiere of Do No Harm flopped hard with a a 0.9, which is the lowest-rated in-season premiere of any any 4-network scripted program this season EVER. Your predictions were too optimistic.

On The CW, The Vampire Diaries was even with last week's 1.3 adults 18-49 rating. Beauty & the Beast was also even with last week's 0.7 adults 18-49 rating

* At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.9/4 in metered-market households and a 0.4/3 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live baseball game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

    Holy Crap. Idol, that must be a series low since the first series. And TBBT is down from the 20 million and the 6.1 it got a few weeks ago, but it still is doing really well. Crushed Idol.

    And I dont watch Scandal but whatever ABC is doing with it keep it up. The only 10pm show on any network that seems to be doing well in the slot and gaining viewers over the first year.

    I must say, here and now, that I didn’t think it would actually happen, because it was looking very good for a straight run between 5.0 and 6.0 for ALL of the auditions; but DAYUM!!!

    Assuming upward adjustment, we are looking at perhaps 4.6 (18-49) and 13.9 million viewers, which will be the first time it has drawn fewer than 14 million. If this keeps up throughout the auditions, and it doesn’t pick up during the live shows, these numbers could drag the show down to number 7 for the year, and we might see a show that draws fewer than 13 million.

    There are a lot of reasons why Scandal is rising in the ratings

    – Social media. The entire casts live tweets during both east and west coast airings of the show. It is not uncommon during 10:00 – midnight on Thurs nites for 5 or more of the top 10 trending topics to be Scandal related

    – Word of mouth. Early adopters of the show are ride or die! People who like the show are busily trying to convert other people.

    – The Who Shot Fitz storyline. Created a quick hook to attract new viewers

    – Easy availability. Season 1 is available on Netflix streaming and on abc.com. Season two is available on HULU with no expire date. It is very easy to find old episodes and get caught up.

    – Promotion. ABC is finally promoting this show. When it first came out it got ZERO promotion. When it started to get traction ABC started promoting. And not only that, they are smart about what they promote. They tease the sexy sizzly stuff that would appeal to their target demographic 18-49 y.o women. Also they promote the heck out of Olivia Pope’s wardrobe which is top tier, so the show gets mentions not only in tv and industry mags but also in fashion & gossip mags.

    – Cool cred. Some of the people who have discovered the show are celebrities. These people tend to have the most twitter followers and some of them are talking it up and also mentioning it is their own interviews.

    – Good tv. It does what a tv show is supposed to do. It delivers a product that meets the expectation of the person watching it and then it creates an even bigger expectation for the next episode. People who watch constantly use “exciting” to describe it.

    All in all a perfect storm of things that made this show suddenly a hot commodity

    In response to your question about tv stars that play in a movie and it effecting its ratings for the better, yes I do know of one.

    When Sarah Michelle Gellar played in movies such as I know what you did last summer, cruel intentions/scream 2,(a very small part at that) it had a major effect on the hit WB show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Ratings rose that season by 1 million viewers plus for an average over the prior season w/o her in any movies.

    3.9 is Idol’s all-time low, from last year’s results show for the round of 8. 13.7 million is the lowest in viewership since the 1st season.

    OMG at “DO NO FLOP” , i was actually going to watch this show on Hulu today, but now that it got a 0.9 the show is dead, there’s no point to try to watch it. NBC should pull the plug after the 2nd episode. Even reruns could pull the same ratings.

    I think Scandal will continue to grow….I think more and more people are discovering it each week…if you watch it once you will watch it again!!! Everybody I know who watches it started because it was recommended by someone else.

    Do No Harm was full of AWFUL, made amusing only by the fat that we saw the lead actor a few nights ago on one of those murder reenactment shows on the ID or BIO channel (I can’t remember which one)from I think 2001 where he played the murderer. I remember saying while we were watching it, “Keep in mind, these people are serious actor wannabes.” LMAO!

    I’m a little surprised B&TB doesn’t get a little more of the TVD audience. I know they don’t have to overlap (my parents enjoy the former and haven’t ever seen the latter), but still…
