Last night's Super Bowl averaged 108.4 million, making it the third most-watched game of all time (trailing last year's 111.3 million and 2011's 111.0 million). Given the circumstances with the teams involved and the delay due to the power outage, that doesn't seem to shabby.

Elementary, which didn't begin until 11:11p, averaged 20.8 million viewers.

via press release:

CBS SPORTS’ COVERAGE OF Super Bowl XLVII IS THIRD MOST-WATCHED PROGRAM IN TELEVISION HISTORY

AND

SECOND-HIGHEST RATED Super Bowl IN 27 YEARS

Average of 108.41 Million Watch Baltimore Win Super Bowl XLVII

Network Garners Fast National Household Rating/Share of 46.3/69

The CBS Television Network’s coverage of Super Bowl XLVII featuring the BALTIMORE RAVENS’ 34-31 win over the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers’ on Sunday, Feb 3 (6:32-8:41 and 9:11-10:47 PM, ET) was watched by a Nielsen estimated average of 108.41 million viewers, making it the third most-watched program in television history (Super Bowl XLVI - 111.3 million; Super Bowl XLV – 111.0 million).

CBS Sports’ coverage of Super Bowl XLVII earned an average fast national household rating/share of 46.3/69 (47.0/71; N.Y. Giants-New England; Super Bowl XLVI), making it the second highest-rated Super Bowl in 27 years (1/26/86; 48.3/70; Chicago-New England).

Guessed 107.5 million viewers the other day. Not bad! :)

Is there an official reason why the ‘blackout’ portion of the game isn’t a part of the numbers?

  • Oliver

Ouch, 7.8 in 18-49 is very weak. Must have skewed really old.

To compare, The Office got 23m viewers but 11.0 in 18-49.

  • Clare

Julia: Madonna scored the most watched televised event – ever. With 114 million views for her Half time show. Last year’s Superbowl was also the most watched superbowl with 111 views. Meaning Madonna actually generated 4 million extra views than the game itself.

Is Elementary lowest ever or still glee is lowest ever show after super bowl@ Thanks.

  • JohnC

I don’t think it is going to make a difference on Elementary rating.

Okay, I decided to throw these numbers together to get a better comparison of the shows. I looked at the last six shows to air a mid-season episode after the Super Bowl and looked at the bump in viewers (I don’t have the A18-49 figures) it got from its previous airing. Here they are in order of largest audience gain:

    2009 – The Office 162.13%
    2011 – Glee – 142.10%
    2006 – Grey’s Anatomy – 105.43%
    2013 – Elementary – 92.59%
    2007 – Criminal Minds – 63.85%
    2008 – House – 28.75%

I think the key takeaway here is to premiere a new series (or season) after the Super Bowl. Four of the Top Five post-Super Bowl shows in the last 15 years have been season or series premieres (Survivor 2, Undercover Boss, Grey’s Anatomy, The Voice, Survivor: All-Stars). That used to be the strategy until NBC killed it with the Friends episode. Nobody else has been able to duplicate it, though.

As much as I like Elementary I have to admit, the retention after Superbowl was barely 20% of the total viewership. H50 had better retention after AFC football and it was aired on only one coast. The other had CSI: NY.

TV line picked Elementary as a Looser on Super Bowl Sunday………

    Loser: Elementary
The show’s post-Super Bowl episode was about as exciting as the 49ers locker room after the big game.

I would have to agree. Tried watching it Got thru about 20min and was bored and uninterested so I switched channels. Anyone else feel that way???

Lol

  • JR35

Since Madonna’s halftime show started precisely around 8 p.m. last year, the 15-minute ratings were nearly 116 million. Only the Queen.

There goes the streak of annual increased viewership. No Super Bowl next year, I’m guessing.

I think any program that aired after the Super Bowl at 11:11 PM EST was not going to get that much of boost from the game. CBS could have aired a new episode of The Big Bang Theory in that time slot and it probably would not have gotten record ratings.
Elementary’s PG violent content (a serial killer who murdered a lot of people in the program) was not the best follow up to the family friendly sporting event.

A 7.8 would have been a record ratings for TBBT. Also Elementary did get a huge boost from the game (it’s been averaging in the mid 2’s and more than tripled that with this episode).

  • Tollis64

Hello, it doesn’t really matter what the ratings were for Elementary it’s already a success in its time slot and has an audience.

  • Bjm

What is that mess posted in all caps on this page?

AND MAYBE THAT’S WHY MADONNA WAS THE NUMBER 1 TRENDING TOPIC ON TWITTER WORDWIDE DURING THIS SHOW? Lol

  • Vanquished

I’d call it a failure… It should break the record every year, as population increases and more people gain access to television in the country…

What do you expect when you have two hated teams in a superbowl?

  • Winning C.

Super Bowl still did better than I thought it would, I thought it wouldn’t even beat the first Super Bowl that reached over 100 million viewers which was Super Bowl 44 which beat M*A*S*H that year. The power outage, early blowout, and the game running an hour longer had me thinking a bit lower but it stayed up. The game was probably going to set a record if it didn’t end later than usual.

I thought this was a very entertaining Super Bowl as the game itself as it gave people enough stuff to talk about including that power outage. I was starting to think when the Niners came back that it was a sabotage. LOL! It was also better that it was on CBS this year who does the best at NFL coverage. I am not excited at all that the game is on horrible FOX Sports next year, their coverage is absolutely awful.

As for Elementary I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt for starting after 11pm but that’s still pretty good for a show airing that late on the East Coast.

  • jp

still a good number. i thought it do somewhere near the same as super bowl 44 but still good.

  • Max

@ Winning C. Are you kidding me? CBS has the worse NFL coverage usually. They often make mistakes in announcing players making plays, or airing commercials and then coming back missing part of plays, or showing bias in their announcing toward the ‘favored team.’

Fox is way better. NBC for all its flaws as the best NFL game coverage.

  • a p garcia

It aired tooo late for me!
