POST-Super Bowl BROADCAST OF "Elementary" SCORES WITH 20.8 MILLION VIEWERS, 7.8 rating IN A18-49 AND 8.3 RATING IN A25-54

"Elementary" Ranks as Television's Highest-Rated Entertainment Broadcast of the Year in A18-49, A25-54 and A18-34

Despite the latest start time ever for a post-Super Bowl broadcast, the freshman drama Elementary delivered 20.8 million viewers, 7.8 rating in adults 18-49, 8.3 in adults 25-54 and 7.4 in adults 18-34, according to Nielsen time period adjusted live plus same day fast nationals for Sunday, Feb. 3.

This represents the highest-rated entertainment broadcast of the year in television among adults 18-49, adults 25-54 (tie, "The Big Bang Theory") and adults 18-34.

Elementary Super Bowl (S) from 11:11 PM-12:11 AM delivered an 11.6/23 with an average of 20.80m viewers, 8.3 in adults 25-54, 7.8 in adults 18-49 and 7.4 in adults 18-34, all series highs. Elementary delivered +3.45 million viewers more than "Alias" in 2003 (11:01 PM start time), the only other post-Super Bowl program to air completely out of primetime. ELEMENTARY also topped "Alias" in adults 18-34 (7.4 vs. 7.2)

Showcasing the freshman drama to new viewers in the post-Super Bowl timeslot, ELEMENTARY delivered +61% increase over its season average in viewers (vs. 12.88m, +7.92 million viewers), +160% in adults 18-49 (from 3.0/09), +102% in adults 25-54 (4.1/10) and +335% in adults 18-34 (from 1.7/06)

    @I never expected Elementary to do great after the SB however, those complaining CBS should have aired something else at this point is ridiculous. About any show that started past 11 would do poorly. Who the hell is going to stay up until midnight?

    2 Broke girls will be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy better. at 11. Also is only 30 minutes so i can say that 2BG even at 11 will be close to the voice. Very close.

    @Petar Ivanov

    CBS wouldn’t have cancelled Elementary this season even if it aired WITHOUT the Super-Bowl, so that’s a stupid thing to say really.

  • David Howell

    How many people have forgotten that CBS had no idea the lead-out would start this late, and every reason to believe it wouldn’t? Half the comments imply as much!

  • Mon

    Ugh, idiots. You’d have a point that Elementary flopped if it had started about 10pm with the same 20 million viewers. But no! IT started an hour later. What’s so hard to understand about that? You can’t guarantee your precious Person of Interest would have done better than 20 million viewers at 11pm. You’d never know.

  • bluejays

    The rating is fine. the show aired past the start date. However its whether or not it translates into long term gains. Robert – has a superbowl ever given a long term boost to a drama (maybe Greys??)

  • Petar Ivanov

    @ABCDEF
    you said it so well so i only will just repeat what you said and note that at 11 the best choice was half hour show – 2BG. Still even at 11 2BG can beat 18.0 demo that the voice get.

    @@ABCDEF who said:

    Elementary should have created ‘exposure’ in a timeslot after AFC, for example. SB slot should be opportunity for bigger shows, not middling ones.

    Elementary is only solid 10pm show, nothing more. CBS should have capitalized on both 2 Broke Girls or Person of Interest as their biggest hits in the new decade, but they missed two BIG opportunites

  • bluejays

    I meant start time.

    Nope we can. But I can guarantee that 2BG will be better. Way better. And definitely not with worst retention of all time. Not even close. I guess for half Elementary lose big demo numbers. Doubt that 2BG for 30 minutes will lose any.

    @ Petar Ivanov I don’t go to sleep until midnight, so me. LOL

    Elementary did much better than I thought it would, starting so late on the East Coast (I skipped it myself). The show is good enough, but not original in the least, and a very “CBS” show, like NCIS and POI. Hopefully it will get some boost…

    And I don’t see why POI would have done better – its on earlier so it naturally will get better ratings at 9PM (esp after BBT). Put it on at 10PM and see how it flies. I most definitely would not have watched if it was after the SB, even if it started earlier.

    Scandal has nothing to fear.

  • The End

    Judge Elementary on it’s following episode. If it can retain some Nielsen viewers and do better than Glee in that regard, CBS will be happy.

  • brent

    Not bad but it could’ve been better. I think Alias also started 11, so…

    Anyway, I think CBS made the right call. It should give to the show a huge boost.

  • Mon

    @Petar

    Please stop. You’re making it look like 2 Broke Girls’ fans are bitter. I love 2BG but I quite understand why CBS had chosen Elementary to have the post-SB slot. It might have done better than ELementary but what now? It didn’t air after the Super Bowl. That issue should have been long gone.

  • rob60990

    Of course 2 Broke Girls would have done better since its a half hour comedy. There was probably a huge audience erosion in the half hour for Elementary.

  • bluejays

    @Petar – I agree with you that CBS should have shown POI or 2BG’s but … I get why they went with Elementary. Their ten pm slot in general is weak this year, none of the shows are getting above a 2.5 (excepting a few eps of CSI). And last year they ruled that time slot.

    I don’t think it’s a coincidence that CBS chose to air two ten pm shows after big games this year. POI and 2bG’s are doing well. Elementary and HFO – like all their other ten pm offerings – are doing okay. They need to boost that slot full stop. Vegas is gone, CSI is doing well but is old, and The Mentalist has failed to revive their Sunday nights. They need a break at that hour and they’re pushing the shows they think have the best chance of giving them it.

  • matt

    Elementary is such a flop that it’s listed as “certain to be renewed”. It got what it needed. Yes, it could have been better, but still had good numbers

  • psychic

    Wow.
    Holy.
    That’s like NCIS/Big Bang Theory numbers.
    Way to get renewed.

  • Petar Ivanov

    That is all point. Of course. Simple math. SO simple and so true. Start at 11.11 ended at 11.46 and will be funny so people will invest 30 minutes even so late. I think even TODAY 2BG can hit at least 5.0. AT LEAST.

    @MichaelChickless

    “”@Sarah “Is the half hour # available?”

    15.4 and 0.2 perhaps?”"

    LMAO! I hope not and thanks for the reply.
