The crazy retentionistas (as well as the irrelevant TV critics) have had their knives out for The Neighbors for quite some time. Their nonsense cries will be silenced, yet again, when it gets renewed this spring.

If you're sensing a bit of water treading with the ABC post this week, you'd be right. I had Last Man Standing and Malibu Country in the headline last week, and since they're the only ABC shows who's futures are in reasonable doubt before the mid-season premieres begin there's really nothing new to talk about this week. Carry on.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

  • What?

    Malibu Country – .64, airs on a Friday, only 18 episodes, bubble show
    Happy Endings – .60, 57 episodes at the end of this season, 22 away from a reasonable syndication number, produced by Sony/ABC Studios, likely canceled

    What the what?

  • Bill Lee

    So mad that Happy Endings might be canceled. If only it was still on Wednesday night.

    You may well be right and I should have Malibu Country as likely canceled, but it’s very hard to know what level of discount ABC will apply to their Friday show’s ratings since I don’t have any history of ABC ever renewing Friday scripted show (in the last 5 seasons) to go by.

    But, of course, your comment wasn’t really about Malibu Country, was it? You’re a desperate Happy Endings fan. You can pray for a Sony ‘Til Death style miracle. That’s all you’ve got.

    I love the show The Neighbors….it is just clean fun and something the whole family can watch! It is so funny..

  • What?

    @Bill Gorman

    Aggressive and unnecessary tone. Is this is a discussion on prospects, or is this you talking down to people? Please don’t call people desperate. Again, we have no idea what the budget and syndication prospects of Happy Endings look like. I don’t know. You don’t know. This is the only ABCStudios comedy that has syndication prospects that’s still on network TV. I’m not a “desperate fan”, I’m just pointing a few pertinent facts out. Thanks for belittling me, though.

  • RAYRAY

    ABC is doing well this year!

  • PurpleDrasi

    Really bummed out by the frowney faces for Happy Endings. On the other hand it’s nice to see The Neighbors hanging in there. What? It’s a cute show. I like it and I don’t care who knows it.

  • EJ

    Kinda doubting Happy Endings is getting cancelled. It’s one season away from 80 episodes, I think they’ll give them at least one more season for that reason alone.

  • brutony

    The Neighbors has gone progressively downward since its funny debut and good first few eps. I think the problem now is theyre making the Weavers the quirky, loony family, and that just doesnt work. And each episode seems to end in some touchy-feely type of lesson learned crap! One and done!

  • Fake Me Out

    Interesting piece over @ TVGuide suggest Happy Endings may not be happy but ending as well despite many of it’s viewers being in the $100k+ club. It has a rosier view for Nashville though.

    fyi & ymmv

    Cancel Happy Endings and The Neighbors. Renew the rest.

    I suppose they could be doing worse than fourth… ;)

    Oh, I see now. “What the what?” was part of simply “pointing a few pertinent facts out” not at all “aggressive and unnecessary”.

  • glover

    I still don’t think The Neighbors will be renewed. ABC will want to launch at least one new comedy on wednesday next season and there is no place for The Neighbors on another day of the week.

  • Ted Craig

    @Ultima

    ABC is second if you take out singing competitions and, yes, I realize that’s a somewhat absurd comment.

  • Jim

    Has there ever been an occurrence that a show you listed as “Likely to be Renewed” on the Renew/Cancel Index ended up being “cancelled for real” in May?

  • SteveStrifeX

    @Bill Gorman

    I just read on another entertainment site (which shall not be named) that ABC ordered one additional episode of Castle. Any thoughts on why? It just seems peculiar to me is all, since whenever I read about additional episodes being ordered it’s for the “back 9″ or an extra 5 or something. It probably means nothing, but I was hoping for your thoughts on it (Getting more episodes for syndication? Trying to complete a story arc? Cancelled but one extra episode to wrap it all up?). Thanks!!!

    if it’s not for the soap boycott then why is abc doing so bad throughout the prime time schedule

    I could have sworn ABC’s primetime ratings went up last year after they canceled their soaps.

    Awesome boycott there.
