The crazy retentionistas (as well as the irrelevant TV critics) have had their knives out for The Neighbors for quite some time. Their nonsense cries will be silenced, yet again, when it gets renewed this spring.

If you're sensing a bit of water treading with the ABC post this week, you'd be right. I had Last Man Standing and Malibu Country in the headline last week, and since they're the only ABC shows who's futures are in reasonable doubt before the mid-season premieres begin there's really nothing new to talk about this week. Carry on.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Want to know what the ABC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Cass “why is abc doing so bad throughout the prime time schedule And is in 4th place”

    Because ABC sucks? ;-) :-)

  • Leoben Conoy

If there is any show on any network this deserving of a renewal, it is The Neighbors.

It is by far the best new sitcom of the season and has only improved every episode since the pilot.

If Im ABC, I pair it up with some new quirky show for Friday nights next season. (lets be real, renewal or not, its not staying in its current spot)

    Cancel LMS and Malibu County

@ cass – i’m quite peeved at abc daytime as well, but i don’t think its the boycott that is hurting it. i think old standby reality shows have become tired and they have nothing strong to replace them with.

    @Jim
Has there ever been an occurrence that a show you listed as “Likely to be Renewed” on the Renew/Cancel Index ended up being “cancelled for real” in May?

Of course, that’s why there’s likely renewals (not 100%) and certain renewals (100%).

    @SteveStrifeX
I just read on another entertainment site (which shall not be named) that ABC ordered one additional episode of Castle. Any thoughts on why? It just seems peculiar to me is all, since whenever I read about additional episodes being ordered it’s for the “back 9? or an extra 5 or something. It probably means nothing, but I was hoping for your thoughts on it

It’s fairly common for networks to order an additional episode or two from their veteran series during the season based on scheduling needs.

    @Jim,

Has there ever been an occurrence that a show you listed as “Likely to be Renewed” on the Renew/Cancel Index ended up being “cancelled for real” in May?

    Law and Order.
I think both gave CSI: Miami the renewal over CSI: NY last year.

  • Penny

Happy Endings will defo get renewed for a final fourth season for syndication purposes only. The people at ABC love it.

  • rob60990

ABC is always going to be 4th because they don’t have sports propping them up. All they have is Saturday Night College Football and that doesn’t help too much.

As for The Neighbors, in the end I believe it will be cancelled when ABC sees Suburgatory can hold The Middle’s lead-in better.

“Has there ever been an occurrence that a show you listed as “Likely to be Renewed” on the Renew/Cancel Index ended up being “cancelled for real” in May?”

I’m pretty sure I had The Secret Circle as likely renewed at this point in the season last year. There are probably others in the past that I’m too busy to look up.

Thanks!!!”

Irrelevant to the future of the show. Likely just a matter of one more timeslot they’d like to air an original vs. a repeat.

I think shows have been listed as certain to be renewed and then canceled, but I can’t remember and I’m to lazy to on my phone so I can’t look them up as easily.

“I think shows have been listed as certain to be renewed and then canceled, but I can’t remember and I’m to lazy to on my phone so I can’t look them up as easily.”

I think the only shows that have been “certain” at some point during the season that were later canceled were old, expensive ones that had cost problems that may have killed them like House, Heroes, etc, but I’m also not bothered to look them up.

There were no shows predicted “certain” at the end of the season that have been canceled though AFAIK.

  • Max Vrany

@Bill, notice the lack of a time qualifier.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“ABC is always going to be 4th because they don’t have sports propping them up. “

Except for all the years that ABC was third, even though football was “propping NBC up”.

You make it sound like were the NFL boosts to Fox and CBS removed (~10 early Sunday primetimes, plus playoffs) that ABC would vault ahead of them. That’s complete nonsense.

  • Fred

I’m a huge fan of Happy Endings. But I wouldn’t blame ABC for letting it go.
HE might do OK for TBS.
I’ve been watching Cougar Town on TBS. Still pretty funny. Hope its doing fine there so maybe TBS would consider HE.

  • Pavelsauce

I’m happy for The Neighbors. I’ve liked the show since it debuted.

  • SteveStrifeX

Ah okay, thanks @Bill Gorman and @Ultima! Appreciate your input!

  • Moe

I do hope “The Neighbors” gets renewed. It’s a cute, sweet, quirky show that had really grown on me. Hope it makes it!

I also like “Malibu County” too. It’s not as good as Reba’s last show, but it has it’s charms!

  • Fred

    The many problem with ABC:

-The BIG hits are declining: (MODERN FAMILY, GREY’s even 2nd season OUAT)

-Lack of unscripted hits: (DWTS and BACHELOR are no longer pulling in strong #s. The profitable SHARK TANK and AFHV are doing fine in their time slots, but not super hits.

-Too many only so-so performing shows: Revenge, Castle and Nashville.
Only Scandal is showing clear signs of becoming a mega hit drama.

-CBS has the most popular sitcom (BBT), the most popular newsmagazine (60 Min) and the most popular drama (NCIS)
FOX has the biggest unscripted show (AI) with NBC a close second with (The Voice).

-ABC is not the biggest of anything I can think of at the moment. This is coming from a guy who watches many ABC shows.

  • Ted Craig

A few times now, I’ve read people write that The Neighbors will get canceled because ABC has no place for it on its schedule. That seems silly to me. Allow me to offer three possibilities:

    1. Suburgatory moves off Wednesday, Neighbors stays at 8:30.
    2. Suburgatory moves off Wednesday, Neighbors follows it to new night.
    3. MC gets canceled, Neighbors moves to Friday.

Will any of these happen? Who knows, but they seem more likely than cancellation.
