The crazy retentionistas (as well as the irrelevant TV critics) have had their knives out for The Neighbors for quite some time. Their nonsense cries will be silenced, yet again, when it gets renewed this spring.

If you're sensing a bit of water treading with the ABC post this week, you'd be right. I had Last Man Standing and Malibu Country in the headline last week, and since they're the only ABC shows who's futures are in reasonable doubt before the mid-season premieres begin there's really nothing new to talk about this week. Carry on.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Want to know what the ABC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Last week, Bill Gorman stated, “The reason I still have both [Last Man Standing and Malibu Country] of them at “toss up” is because they’ve both somewhat inconsistent.”

Last Man Standing’s demo through 11 episodes:
    2.0, 1.6, 1.4, 1.4, 1.6, 1.5, 1.5, 1.4, 1.5, 1.3, 1.4

Malibu Country’s demo through 11 episodes:
    2.3, 1.7, 1.4, 1.4, 1.5, 1.4, 1.5, 1.2, 1.4, 1.2, 1.2

For Last Man Standing, what is your definition of “somewhat inconsistent”?

  • Ricky

Irrelevant TV critics, huh! Definitely so, given how ABC is using the bad reviews to promote The Neighbors…

    Version 4.0 has begun: http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/12/09/play-the-elimination-game-page-2/160888/comment-page-54/#comments

    I LOVE ,, THE NEIGHBORS , !

It is hands down one of the best shows that ABC launched this year !

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“For Last Man Standing, what is your definition of “somewhat inconsistent”?”

1.5 to 1.3, in the immediately preceding week, was “somewhat inconsistent”. As noted this week, it’s going to be hard to know where ABC draws the line for the Friday comedies, but predicting renewal for a show that hit a 1.3 seems a stretch for me.

  • steve

Happy Endings deserves a 4th season (for syndication alone)!

ABC…you’d better not screw me over again.

  • Fred

    @Steve

I’m betting Happy Endings is shifted to TBS. If TBS is happy with Cougar Town……
I have never missed an episode of HE. Such an amazing sitcom. Same with Cougar Town.

  • Tommy M.

AS much as I love the show I think Happy Endings days are numbered. I don’t see TBS saving it either.

  • Jake

Ok Bill, gut feeling: Last Man Standing…renewed or canceled??

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Ok Bill, gut feeling: Last Man Standing…renewed or canceled??”

Forced to go all in today, I’d say renewed.

I will be forced (internally) to go all in for every show no later than the first week in May, and unless the situation changes that’s what I will predict then.

  • DW

happy endings is gone. its not on 2/5 , the beginning of sweeps. buh bye.

  • Carmen

I know ABC is in 4th place, but it has more shows that I personally watch regularly (10) than any other network.
It just doesn’t have the huge show (Football, Voice, Idol, etc) that artificially drives the whole network average upward.
But overall, ABC has a lot of good shows. Far more than NBC.

  • JAA

I only watch ABC shows but then I’m a girl

  • Dan S

ABC has a lot of good shows but unfortunately they don’t always click & go by the wayside. Still miss Better Off Ted & Eli Stone. The Neighbors will likely be paired with Suburgatory on Fridays next season & could see a 2 hr comedy block. I’m sure they won’t schedule any comedies again on Tues. MC will disappear so another new comedy can replace it while LMS will survive.

  • v

Neighbour’s is a toss up for me, until HowToLiveWithParents comedy premieres behind MOdern Family.

ABC isn’t going to move Suburgatory for there lowest rated show on Wed.

  • BigBrotherFan

The Neighbors? WHY IN THE WORLD are people tuning into this SATURDAY MORNING level `comedy`? It was likely one of the WORST comedies in recent memories BUT this season sure did give up the goods in that respect 1600 PENN, ANIMAL PRACTICE, anyone? The idiots that run ABC will be dumb as a bag of rocks, like they typically are, and renew this trash.

Happy Endings it is a shame what is happening here. They are just KILLING the show now and are not really doing ANYTHING to help it. That sucks! Because it is the best COMEDY ABC has on air right now. Such a talented lik-able fun cast and even NICK ZANO seems to be fitting in the group quite well.Such great chemistry between all these actors and they play their parts so well. I think the show is too 18-34 to work elsewhere other than the CW at this point. The old battle axes watching CBS night after night wouldn`t go for it and FOX is already trying WAY too hard at this demo for their comedies (NEW GIRL, BEN AND KATE, MINDY PROJECT, ETC ETC) and NBC would end up just killing it anyway after slashing a good portion of the budget and cast. Such a shame.

I do not feel good about REVENGE and I am a fan of the show but its honestly up against tons of events and awards, the steam it was trying to build this season has run out and there are way too many characters dragging the show down rather than doing ANYTHING to advance the plot. I think, because this happend so early in its run and fan reaction a retool at this point of the season maybe too late. People, I think, are now offically turned off. THANKS KELLEY for such series destroying characters as AIDEN! Season 2 major fail because of him alone. FACE IT we had Declan last year, he maybe annoying, but he doesn`t take the whole premise of the show down with him and his storyline. I predict a 1.8 this Sunday followed by high 1s for the rest of the season.

NASHVILLE is the best show on TV right now next to the FOLLOWING and if ABC cancels it I will never ever watch their network ever again! The plots are amazing! Connie Britton is by far the HOTTEST 40-something year old lady on TV right now. The characters are so well written. The show is not full of a bunch of cliche ridden crap and the tunes are not half bad. This is truly a superb show and needs another season.

Scandal is doing great! I am glad I got into this show when it premired last season, I almost didn`t. I cant stand the Shonda stuff! The acting is really standout and I hope it is wiping the floor with FLOPEMENTRY by 50% by the end of the season. Even with the SUPERBOWL slot FLOPEMENTRY is doomed for nother more than 1.5 seasons. This is NOT the typical melodramtic Shonda stuff, at all!

  • Rebecca

I don’t see TBS saving HE like they did CT. I’ll just enjoy what’s left of HE, and maybe it’ll be another season’s worth. I think my only ABC shows that are in trouble now are HE and LMS. I hope the rest of A23 will be on hulu some time in the future.

Midseason- Scandal, Red Widow, How to Live With Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)

Given Scandal’s recent ratings increase, it may not be the best move to keep it for midseason. I’ll definitely change it if it can keep that 1.7, though.

  • Nick

ABC being in 4th doesn’t really matter to them. What matters is that as a whole they are only down ~12%, which is good compared to the CW, Fox, and pre-Super Bowl CBS.

  • tobes

    @bigbrotherfan
I wouldn’t count Revenge out yet, it was kind of expected that it would come back with low ratings since it was against big playoff games and award shows. But with Sunday night football gone for the season expect revenge to start picking back up again, especially after the Grammys are done. And episode 14 is coming soon which will draw back viewers

  • KJ Styles

@BigBrotherFan- “I do not feel good about REVENGE and I am a fan of the show but its honestly up against tons of events and awards.”

I’m no Revenge fan, but from an objective point of view if if was able to draw in the 2′s against Sunday Night Football and The Walking Dead, what makes you think it will fall off now?

If anything, Revenge’s numbers should go UP, as will OUAT’s. And both shows will likely air repeats against the Grammies and NBA All Star Game.
