The crazy retentionistas (as well as the irrelevant TV critics) have had their knives out for The Neighbors for quite some time. Their nonsense cries will be silenced, yet again, when it gets renewed this spring.

If you're sensing a bit of water treading with the ABC post this week, you'd be right. I had Last Man Standing and Malibu Country in the headline last week, and since they're the only ABC shows who's futures are in reasonable doubt before the mid-season premieres begin there's really nothing new to talk about this week. Carry on.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Want to know what the ABC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Bill, thanks for your quick response, I enjoy the site!

    @KJ Styles
    And both shows will likely air repeats against the Grammies and NBA All Star Game.

    Do people ever look at the schedule? ABC is all new that night.

  • Anthony

    I’m certainly not a retentionista or anything like that, but if I recall correctly a few years ago ABC cancelled Better With You when it had very similar ratings (lost a chunk of Middle’s lead in). Based off that I would think that The Neighbors is a toss up.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

    “ABC being in 4th doesn’t really matter to them. What matters is that as a whole they are only down ~12%, which is good compared to the CW, Fox, and pre-Super Bowl CBS.”

    I’d mostly agree with that. Finish position is PR cheerleading only.

    But while that 12% decline is better than the other nets you noted, it is worse than the long term annual broadcast declines of 5-10%.

    Ultimately, managing their own revenue/profits is ABC’s main concern, the fact they’re declining a bit less than the other guys is limited consolation.

  • Randy

    What happened to new episodes of Winter Wipeout? There are so many shows they cancelled, and you think they would put it somewhere on the schedule.

    Next year, I think that if Family Tools ever gets off the ground, that should air on Thursdays with the Neighbors, and Suburgatory starting at 8pm central. Than, add another new comedy to Thursdays at 9pm central. Move Last Man Standing to Wednesdays where the Neighbors used to be. I think Once Upon a Time would do great on Thursdays before the 2hr comedy block next year if they did this. They reason you start at 8pm – the comedy block is to avoid cbs’s wrath, and partially nbc’s, but nbc isn’t that great anyway.

  • BigBrotherFan

    @Tobes
    You could very well be right but based on the 100`s of comments on not only this board but many others it seems that people are not-so impressed with REVENGE this season and have given up. I, for one, am almost there. I know going up against the Golden Globes and tons of big sporting events would hurt it but at the same time, it didn`t seem to hurt The Good Wife anyway near the point drops in did for Revenge.

    I hope for the shows sake the guy in the boat is Aiden. If they do something to YET AGAIN insult the fans inteligence and have it be FauxAmanada instead then I`m done.

  • BigBrotherFan

    @KJ Styles

    It`s been going against The Walking Dead and Sunday Night Foodball for almost it`s entire 2nd season run and it was doing 2.4-2.7 range for a month or so there and then slowly started declining as the quality of the story hit bottom. If you watched the show you know exactly what I mean. I love Revenge but as certain storylines and characters such as Aiden and Helen continue to drag the premise of the entire show down further so does it`s ratings. Seems logical to me.

  • Richard Steven Hack

    BigBrotherFan: “there are way too many characters dragging the show down”

    I think the main bad move was the entire “drug-dealing brothers” bit. Those guys are utterly superfluous to the main subplots. They need to go and go soon.

    I also think Nolan’s ex-CFO was a major waste of space as well. His only function was to get Nolan’s company taken over by Daniel, and thus he should now go away.

    Padma is hot so I don’t mind her being around, especially since she’s obviously under the thumb of The Initiative.

    Unlike you, I think Aiden was a perfectly good addition. We can’t see Emily and Daniel getting back together, or Emily and Jack – due to faux-Emily and the baby – so Aiden provides a love interest and an aide to Emily as well as an additional revenge motivation. That’s fine.

    The whole “Emily’s mother” thing petered out and ended up being fairly lame. I think that slowed things down a bit.

    “I predict a 1.8 this Sunday followed by high 1s or the rest of the season.”

    I think it will stabilize north of 2,0 and perhaps even grow or fluctuate. I assume that things will pick up a bit over the remainder of the episodes, building to some major finale. I think some of the characters will be “thinned out” by then as well. There are also some major shockers allegedly coming up fairly soon including a major character death.

    BigBrotherFan: I absolutely have not given up on Revenge. The show has gotten pretty complicated – too much so, in my opinion – and has some pointless subplots and characters as I say above – but the show still is compelling and I expect it to be more so for the rest of the season.

  • tobes

    @bigbrotherfan

    I already know its not gonna be aiden because I remember reading somewhere that hes being upgraded to a series regular… Its very likely the dead body is one of the Ryan brothers

  • BigBrotherFan

    @RichardStevenHack

    I have to disagree. I think the Porter Brothers and their problems with those two other guys doesn`t really have much to do with the main plot at hand, and although that can be seen as taking away from the main theme of the show, i sure don`t think it is ruining it. They have to give those guys something to do (the porters)if they aren`t involed with Emily.

    The whole idea was about Revenge and Emily getting back at the people that wronged her father episode by episode. I understand the show needs to branch off from that here (An attempt with Kara was a complete BOMB!) and there but the whole character of AIDEN is stupid and ruining the show. I don`t care about the `sister`plot. I do not care about his ties with Helen and the Greysons and I sure as heck could easily do without him. I do not even know what this show is about anymore! Since Aiden was introduced his has become another show and extremely lame and confusing. I really believe if they dropped Aiden we could finally revisit the Jack and Emily plot and Emily can finally get back to business WITH NOLAN like most fans seem to be screaming for.

    I don`t mind Padma.. and Marko was barely a side plot at that that he didn`t derail the show as much as the character of Aiden has. The more AIDEN the more the ratings crash.
    @Tobes
    Agh. I know. I read that, too! They are not really listing to fan compliants I guess and this is why the show will continue to stay around high 1`s.

    Problems with Revenge:

    The decline in quality began last season when it returned from Winter Break.
    It has only worsened since then. When the focus strayed from Faux Emily vs the Graysons the show suffered.

    Any scene that involves the Bar .the new partners or The Porters is boring. Jack (older brother) is fine and should be kept on the show, but only because of his relationship with faux Emily and faux Amanda.

    The Initiative plot is boring and complicated. Must be ended.

    Aiden is a boring character. Can’t understand most of what he is saying anyway. Why did the producers promote him to a main character? Only good for a laugh when Nolan cracks 007 references about him.

    Nolan’s character is weak this season. Not as clever as last season. His relationship with his 2 employees is dull.

    Last season faux Emily was fantastic. This season mostly dull. Same with the new more confident Daniel.

    The biggest improvemnent is faux Amanda. Her character is one of the most watchable on the show this season, last sesson her character was mostly laughable.

    Victoia Grayson and her husband remain the absolute best part of Revenge. Its a credit to them that they rise above the boring Initiative plot that they are stuck in.

    I will continue to watch Revenge until the bitter end. Like I do all serial dramas. Like a drug to me.

  • Laticia Jones

    Last Man Standing and Malibu Country renewed, possibly for shortened seasons.
    The Neighbours will fall too much by the end of May and be cancelled.
    Happy Endings will move to TBS and be partnered with Cougar Town.

  • Fred

    I just realized I used the term BORING several times in my rant against Revenge. Other adjectives:

    Convoluted
    Unbelievable (negative connotation)
    Dreary
    Talky
    Uninspired
    and
    Lifeless

    And I call myself a fan.

  • Nick

    @Bill

    Yeah, I get that. I still think that a 12% decrease is OK for an off year, especially because ABC has the possiblitity of rising. Modern Family, The Middle, OUAT, Revenge, Shark Tank, and DWTS will be back with original episodes soon. Red Widow, Body of Proof, and Celebrity Diving will almost certainly increase over their predecessors (666 Park, Private Practice, Happy Endings/Apartment 23). I can see that 12% possibly going down to 8-10%, which is good (and not impossible, since they were at 8% a few weeks ago).

  • Ted Craig

    @V
    They wouldn’t move Suburgatory to make room for The Neighbors. They would move it because it has the best chance of surviving on its own. As I said, I can see them moving as a tandem, maybe to Tuesdays at 8, but I don’t really want to play fantasy network line-up.

    @…
    HE at 8:30 on Wednesdays is delusional.

    By the way, I’m not sure ABC is an interested in reviving TGIF as people like to believe.

  • Richard Steven Hack

    BigBrotherFan: “I think the Porter Brothers and their problems with those two other guys doesn`t really have much to do with the main plot at hand, and although that can be seen as taking away from the main theme of the show, i sure don`t think it is ruining it. They have to give those guys something to do (the porters)if they aren`t involed with Emily.”

    Frankly, I never liked Declan and I think they just need Jack as a potential love interest for Emily. Maybe Declan is the one who croaks in the upcoming death. They only need him to give the Grayson sister someone to mess with. They should kill off both of them, in my view.

    “but the whole character of AIDEN is stupid and ruining the show. I don`t care about the `sister`plot. I do not care about his ties with Helen and the Greysons and I sure as heck could easily do without him.”

    I still don’t understand the hate for Aiden. He is an aide to Emily, has connections with Takeda (who is a character I’d really like to see more involved and some background on exactly who he is and what is his issue with The Initiative), and a love interest for Emily why Jack is occupied with Faux-Amanda.

    Maybe people don’t like the actor, but the character is fine. He’s useful, he provides additional revenge motivation – remember the show is about “revenge” in general, not just Emily’s revenge, as the producers made clear in season one interviews – and conflict.

    The Initiative conflict has been a bit confusing because we’ve only seen one member and one henchmen so far. They need to flesh that out some more.

    “I do not even know what this show is about anymore!”

    I just told you – it’s about REVENGE – not just Emily’s revenge.

    “I don`t mind Padma.. and Marko was barely a side plot at that that he didn`t derail the show as much as the character of Aiden has.”

    But the problem was there were too many characters introduced this season: Emily’s mother, Aiden, Marko, Padma and the drug dealers. That’s about four too many. And the ones with the least screen time were Marko, Padma and the drug dealers. Emily’s mother is gone, and those people need to go as well. Aiden can stay – or not, actually, it wouldn’t bother me if he went, too.

    “The more AIDEN the more the ratings crash.”

    I don’t think he’s to blame solely. Just sayin’.

    Fred: “When the focus strayed from Faux Emily vs the Graysons the show suffered.”

    I agree that should be the center plot of the show, but it can’t be forever. The producers indicated in season one that the show would expand into other “revenge scenarios”.

    “Any scene that involves the Bar .the new partners or The Porters is boring.”

    Agreed.

    “Jack (older brother) is fine and should be kept on the show, but only because of his relationship with faux Emily and faux Amanda.”

    Agreed.

    “The Initiative plot is boring and complicated. Must be ended.”

    I think it should be expanded so it makes more sense. Who ARE The Initiative, what is their goals, what is Takeda’s interest, and so one. As long as it doesn’t take away Emily’s goal of ruining the Graysons, that would be fine. In fact, The Initiative should be Emily’s way of finally taking down the Graysons – except of course that should make it more difficult.

    “Aiden is a boring character. Can’t understand most of what he is saying anyway. Why did the producers promote him to a main character? Only good for a laugh when Nolan cracks 007 references about him.”

    He’s Emily’s link to Takeda, plus he’s an aide and love interest while Jack is no longer available to Emily. I understand his dialog fine. Because The Initiative was provided as an expanded enemy to Emily, because of her mother, Aiden had to be brought in to help deal with the expanded enemy. Nolan wasn’t up to it.

    “Nolan’s character is weak this season. Not as clever as last season.”

    That may change, since apparently The Initiative is after his software.

    “His relationship with his 2 employees is dull.”

    Agreed. Apparently the only reason they exist was to get his company under Daniel’s control and THAT was done to enable The Initiative to get his software. A bit round-about which introduced too many new and otherwise pointless characters.

    “Last season faux Emily was fantastic. This season mostly dull.”

    I think that’s just because the plot became a bit too complicated. She hasn’t had such a free hand due to The Initiative business.

    “Same with the new more confident Daniel.”

    He was always boring. He’s just a tool to get at the Graysons.

    “The biggest improvemnent is faux Amanda. Her character is one of the most watchable on the show this season, last sesson her character was mostly laughable.”

    I preferred her when she was both an aide and a threat to Emily in season one. Now that she’s a “good mother and wife” to Jack, she’s become terminally boring. With luck, they intend to kill her off and get Jack back with Emily.

    “Victoia Grayson and her husband remain the absolute best part of Revenge. Its a credit to them that they rise above the boring Initiative plot that they are stuck in.”

    Agree that those two pro actors are the best on the show. I’ve always liked Madeleine Stowe.

    “I will continue to watch Revenge until the bitter end.”

    Me, too. But I have some faith that the show will improve by end of this season. And if renewed, which is likely, it will be better next season.

  • tobes

    @richard steven hack

    I definitely think revenge will be back for season 3, but it may get retooled a little. Do you think it may be moved off Sunday nights?

  • Rebecca

    Anyone know what has happened to HE? Futoncritic doesn’t have it in the upcoming listings any more and I don’t see any news about it there or here. Are more episodes going to air eventually?

    @ Bill Gorman and Robert Seidman
    You are famous, appearing on prime time television shows.

    Tonight on they mentioned the Cancellation Bear on “ Suburgatory “ on ABC, Original Airdate: 2/06/2013; they even had a picture of a Cancellation Bear. They used this to cancel Tessa’s Teen talk or body talk show.

    tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com has become national big deal
    Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear.
