The crazy retentionistas (as well as the irrelevant TV critics) have had their knives out for The Neighbors for quite some time. Their nonsense cries will be silenced, yet again, when it gets renewed this spring.

If you're sensing a bit of water treading with the ABC post this week, you'd be right. I had Last Man Standing and Malibu Country in the headline last week, and since they're the only ABC shows who's futures are in reasonable doubt before the mid-season premieres begin there's really nothing new to talk about this week. Carry on.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Yes! The Cancellation Bear making a cameo on Suburgatory! I was all, “Aaaaa! I get that reference!”

It’s a big deal for someone as old as me to out-‘get a reference’ over someone… ;)

  • Derek

Yes, and I am so out of it that I had to run over here to see if anyone else picked up on the Cancellation Bear reference.

  • Bill Gorman

“Yes! The Cancellation Bear making a cameo on Suburgatory! I was all, “Aaaaa! I get that reference!”

The bear breaks into pop culture!

  • Ultima

Anyone know what has happened to HE?

Not sure. Either ABC has pulled the series entirely or it was just for one week to give the Body of Proof premeire a better lead-in. If it’s the latter, they could just move the two preempted episodes to Friday, 29 March.

We’ll find out next Monday or Tuesday when the next round of schedule blurbs comes out.

  • Ultima

    @Ted Craig
By the way, I’m not sure ABC is an interested in reviving TGIF as people like to believe.

That’s what everyone said last year before ABC scheduled comedies on Friday…

  • Rebecca

Thanks. It’s weird, because futoncritic used to have HE listed as airing through most of March and now those listings are gone (haven’t checked yet today but that was the case last night). I knew about it being pulled on the 19th for the Bachelor stuff but that was about it.

    @Richard Steven Hack

Thanks for your lengthly responses. I truly appreciate your opinions even if I sometimes disagree. Its intelligent people like you that make this site enjoyable and informative.

I’m also concerned about Happy Endings. I can’t begin to describe to you how much I enjoy this sitcom. Probably more than any other this season. Nearly every episode was funny this season. Far more consistent than past seasons. I’m am praying that TBS is pleased with their Cougar Town investement, so perhaps they will consider HE.
By the way Cougar Town has been pretty good this season on TBS. Not every ep has me laughing but I enjoy the characters anyway. Can not believe the show runners promoted Tom to join the gang as a regular. I don’t see how he will fit in. I think I liked him better as an outsider in the window. We shall soon see if this change works. Also I miss the attractive COUGAR who used to show up at the most random places with her boy toys. Repetitive but I always laughed when she appeared.

  • Rebecca

Yeah, I’m enjoying CT this season, too. Just found season 3 on dvd at Walmart yesterday so now I own all three previous seasons (they’re $14.99 per season). I have to stream CT on the project free tv site since the TBS site won’t let me (I don’t have TBS on my TV) and hulu doesn’t carry it. We’ll see if the regular appearances of Tom and the lack of Barbara (the real cougar) affect the show much in the long run, but I always enjoy the show. I hope HE has not disappeared for good. It’s weird there’s no article about it yet.

  • Kavyn

They could probably move The Neighbors to Friday and put it with Malibu/LMS for their comedy night on Friday. I love the Neighbors and I’m glad to see the ratings are leading to a renewal.

Unfortunately I dislike Malibu/LMS, but I’ll still tune in for The Neighbors :)

  • Kavyn

Also I watch Revenge but honestly the show’s really gone downhill. I feel like Revenge should have aired with Scandal, not Once. This season they’ve added so many boring new characters and the previous characters barely change. By the time it gets to season 3-4, if Victoria and Conrad continue acting the same then is there really any point in tuning in? The show’s a snoozefest. Emily has also gone downhill for me. She got lost and now all she cares about is falling in love with Aiden.

The Initiative is such a stupid excuse for Victoria/Conrad, they’re trying to make those two seem more likable when everyone already loves to hate them (rendering the Initiative useless to the initial plot and how we feel about the characters).

The only character that actually contributes anything in terms of emotion is Fauxmanda. That girl went from my least favourite to favourite between season 1 and 2, and I’m pretty sure she’s going to get killed off on the boat based on some paparazzi photos from an upcoming funeral episode. I also like Ashley but they haven’t developed her character into anything. I loved her in season 1 when I finally saw her true motive for being with the Graysons, but now all she’s done is be Conrad’s puppet (which I understand, but if they showed a bit more of her mischievous side I’d be really happy).

An Emily/Fauxmanda/Ashley vs. Graysons alliance would just be really fun to watch.

@ultima…..ABC’s primetime lineup has fallen in ratings since the boycott started, I look at ratings on a daily basis….ABC has most shows under the 2.0 demographic, and shows that get below that demo, end up cancelled…before AMC and OLTL’s cancellations ABC’s primetime lineup was above 2.0….see where the ratings are, they are going down and still going down….

  • Honey Badger

A Big Congratulations and Kudos to everybody involved at
To be mentioned on ‘Suburgatory’ on ABC last night 2/06/2013 is a great accomplishment.

That’s like saying that the sky is blue since the boycott started.

  • rob60990

“ABC’s primetime lineup has fallen in ratings since the boycott started”

No it hasn’t. ABC had a great year last year.

“I look at ratings on a daily basis”

    Obviously you don’t.

“ABC has most shows under the 2.0 demographic”

You never seen NBC’s ratings have you?

  • KJ Styles

“You never seen NBC’s ratings have you?”

NBC’s scripted show average sucks, but Sunday Night Football and The Voice have given it a better overall primetime average than ABC.

  • Charmed

    I’m so scared for Nashville.

  • steve

    This show stinks.
Why not renew Happy Endings and get it to syndication at least?

There is no way, if renewed, that Neighbors gets to syndication.

A Possible Fall 2013 ABC schedule could be…

    DWTS Results
    *The Returned*

    The Middle
    Modern Family
    *Untitled Cullen Brothers Comedy*

    Grey’s Anatomy

    Last Man Standings
    The Neighbors
    Shark Tank

    Once Upon a Time

  • Bob Ketler

THE NEIGHBORS is one of the funniest shows on TV. It IS different. Just give it time to grow and it will turn into a hit. It is the ONLY comedy that makes me laugh when I watch it by myself. WICKEDLY FUNNY and clever. PSEUDO-intellectuals will reveal themselves for not understanding the satire in it. KEEP IT….KEEP IT…..KEEP IT!!!!

  • Angie

The Neighbors is so funny. Nice to see a show can be funny and clean all at the same time. Our entire family takes time to sit and watch the neighbors. I never have to worry that it will be to risky for the youngers ones.

    Thanks ABC.
