If you've just come from the ABC post this week, there's more water treading with the obvious here at this week's CBS post.

While it is certain that CBS will cancel one of the three shows in the headline to make room for a new drama next Fall (and possibly more if Golden Boy is renewed, or they reduce their drama hours) I'm the first to admit that guessing which of the three is probably my shakiest current prediction on any network.

I have CSI:NY as "likely canceled" based on little more than the fact that its season is ending early (and it's an old, low rated show, but that's nothing new). Would I be surprised if either The Good Wife or The Mentalist is canceled instead? Not one tiny bit. But I was going to make a call by the end of the season anyway, and it's unlikely I will know more before then, so I figured that fortune favors The Bold.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CBS Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

  • Matthew Chapman

Bill-NICS should be on renewed as CBS renewed it on Friday last week.

  • Vanquished

Isn’t the Good Wife always in danger of being cancelled?

  • Luan

and Vegas is gone too, right?

  • reebi

I hope The Good Wife survives, it deserves one more season.

  • Chris

    No Rules of Engagemet?

  • Cara

    TGW and Rules of Engagement.

  • JacobYates

    @luan
Not if its ratings hold at 1.9 or even go higher tonight. That might warrant it being putback on the bubble.

    “No Rules of Engagemet?”

It just premiered last night and my cutoff is Sunday night with the end of the Nielsen ratings week, it will be in the table next week.

“Bill-NICS should be on renewed as CBS renewed it on Friday last week.”

Indeed. My typical level of inattention for mid season renewals. Now fixed.

“and Vegas is gone too, right?”

As indicated, yes. That’s not in doubt the way my CSINY prediction is though.

    TGW canceled !

  • psychic

Doubt it’s Mentalist getting cancelled, and not just because I’m a fan. I’ve got a feeling it’ll be Good Wife.
Then again, last season I had a “feeling” that CSI Miami would survive, so I’m not always reliable…

TGW still gets award nominations so I can’t see it getting canceled yet even though it has certainly gone downhill… That Kalinda storyline…SMH.

  • Diane

I hope The Mentalist makes it through another season, although I think Simon Baker is tired. His acting ability is not diminishing but his face is showing stress. But then again the lines may come from the outdoor life he loves, particularly from the salt air. Don’t watch The Good Wife or Csi NY so my choice for renewal hopes is easy.

  • Pinkle

    @TV#1

That’s way too many unnecessary moves, and too many moves for CBS period.

Sunday: The Mentalist will probably stay at 10pm. This is a throwaway slot for CBS, and they get nothing from the show’s syndication so it is essentially a gap filler. Also, I think The Good Wife will stay put where it is also.

Monday: No way Survivor gets put at 10pm – that would kill it. However, a new drama getting put there is possible.

Tuesday: CBS will launch a new drama, but I don’t see them breaking up NCIS and NCIS:LA.

Wednesday: This night stays intact the way it is now – Survivor/Criminal Minds/CSI.

Thursday: While this is the perfect opportunity for CBS comedy expansion at 9pm – Person of Interest will simply shift to 10pm as the stronger drama between POI and Elementary.

Friday: The dramas that get put here depend on the moves CBS makes it to its other nights. I can see Elementary and H50 getting put here.

  • Lance

If only one of those 3 shows mentioned are cancelled, I will be shocked. It will be 2 at least.

  • JC

The Mentalist is getting the CSI: Miami treatment which means it will probably go. Its ratings were just fine until they moved it to Sundays where no one knows if/when it will ever be on because football overruns throw everything off.

  • Court

I hope csiny come back season 10

  • EllieMae

Ratings would seem that CSI NY will be going but I sure have enjoyed it this season. Mentalist – I was a late comer to that show and big fan now – but think I have said it before – needs to get Red John and find a new story line if they have any hopes of making it further in my opinion(not saying much) I may agree that Simon Baker may be getting a bit tired of the routine. The Good Wife – watched couple times but don’t like it at all. Wonder when we will know – its now so suspenseful!

  • Mary Ann

I really REALLY want to see “The Good Wife” gone. Critics’ darling or no, that show is unwatchable. Without it, that leaves a better renewal chance for “CSI: NY”, “Vegas” and “The Mentalist.”

  • Rick

@Mary Ann TGW is “unwatchable”? Would be nice to know how you’ve come to that conclusion, since those of us who watch it love it.

You’re just another disgruntled viewer who has to trash TGW to save her own favorite shows.
