If you've just come from the ABC post this week, there's more water treading with the obvious here at this week's CBS post.

While it is certain that CBS will cancel one of the three shows in the headline to make room for a new drama next Fall (and possibly more if Golden Boy is renewed, or they reduce their drama hours) I'm the first to admit that guessing which of the three is probably my shakiest current prediction on any network.

I have CSI:NY as "likely canceled" based on little more than the fact that its season is ending early (and it's an old, low rated show, but that's nothing new). Would I be surprised if either The Good Wife or The Mentalist is canceled instead? Not one tiny bit. But I was going to make a call by the end of the season anyway, and it's unlikely I will know more before then, so I figured that fortune favors The Bold.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CBS Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I agree that The Good Wife should be cancelled and I hope 2 Broke Girls is moved behind Big Bang Theory, now that would be one hell of an hour!

  • Sarah

CBS, don’t mess with POI. It stays where it is .. 9pm ET Thur.

  • Kate

Please let it not be The Mentalist!!

  • Leverage-Fan

The suspense which show will be cancelled is more exciting than most of the TV shows! ;)

  • steve

Why isn’t Rules of Engagement on this list? It did very well last night!

  • Carm

The Good Wife and The Mentalist are one of the better shows out there.

Please don’y let them get cancelled.

If Survivor has a LOT of Fans that where ever they put it it’s fine.
I say Sunday 10 pm. and move The Good Wife to Monday 10 PM!!

  • Raykov

I want (at least) a short final season for The Good Wife!

  • JacobYates

    @bill gorman
Could Vegas move back to on the bubble if its ratings stay at 1.9 tonight? Or would the ratings need to stay there for another week or two for that to happen?

  • Austin

CBS, you are stupid. You should have done CSI NIGHT on WENDESDAY NIGHT. If you did that, then miami and new york would still have good ratings like vegas.

  • Tommy M.

I see CBS canceling The Good Wife and CSI NY as well as their midseason drama (they usually tend to go badly for them.) I don’t see them doing a huge schedule shakeup next season at all. The only drama that I think they may move is NCIS LA, and that’s only if they pick of the NCIS LA spin off. I doubt that they’d want to air 3 NCIS series on the same night, and they will not move the original NCIS considering how well it does in it’s current timeslot.
The biggest question I have is what they will do with their comedies. I have been an advocate for expanding their Thursday comedy block, but they have yet to do it. If for some reason they do it next season it would be a simple matter of moving POI to Tuesdays at 10 (shoring up that timeslot for them,) and some shuffling of timeslots with the comedies. If they do expand I’d bet RoE is around for at least 1 more season, if they don’t expand that would make RoE more of a tossup for me.

  • Big Toe

    Isn’t it obvious!!! CSI: NY!!!

  • Common Anomaly

Update: CBS has ordered their 11th drama pilot.

  • TheBenT

The Mentalist gets better ratings overall than CSI: NY and the Good Wife (even thought the Good Wife airs earlier???). Hopefully Mentalist’s ratings will be up now that football is over. I could see it having a final season 2013-2014 on Sundays or maybe Fridays. It’s pretty likely CSI: NY will go though. Golden Boy may decide The Good Wife’s fate.

  • THE OLD MAN

    I CAN’T TAKE THE SUSPENSE!!!

    Only comment at this time.

  • Michael

TGW will be renewed for a 5th and final season. CSI:NY will be canceled, MENTALIST will be renewed.

  • Petar Ivanov

CBS order 3 legal pilots. So or they will pair TGW with new legal show on friday or new legal show will take sunday 9 pm slot.
Also they order a lot single cam comedies and only 3 multi cam. Wich mean single cam hour somewhere. If they greenlight them. Single cam hour will collapse fast of course.

  • Dan S

Mentalist will definitely return & I think Elementary will replace Good Wife on Sun at 9pm. H50 will likely replace CSINY on Fri at 9pm & with Vegas gone they’ll have Mon, Tues & Thur at 10pm to launch 3 new dramas. The new Robin Williams comedy Crazy Ones will likely go to Mon at 9pm pushing 2BG back to 8:30pm. Another option is Thur at 9pm for Crazy creating a 2 hr comedy block then moving POI to 10pm.

Midseason – CSI: NY, The Good Wife

  • Brian

In order of should fans worry about it:

CSI New York (old and pricy)
Good Wife (relatively new and pricy)
Mentalist (relatively new and not so pricy)

From the previews I’ve seen, Golden Boy looks like some 80s/90s retread of the wiser African American cop and the Caucasian rookie. I think Golden Boy is DOA, maybe not as bad as Do No Harm but can’t see it making it past this season.

    @Nick
Monday — shift some of those comedies back to their original spot. Liking elementary at 9pm
Tuesday — exactly how I pictured it. NCISLA at 10pm and a new drama at 9pm
Wednesday — the new drama can come on during the survivor hiatus. Move CSI back to 10pm and survivor back to 8pm.
    Thursday — i’ll take it
Friday — interesting. Will they give H50 the Friday treatment?
Saturday — crimetime saturday remains. It will be a mix of dramas and 48 hours like it always has been
Sunday — two reality shows in one night is too much. Place a new show there.
