If you've just come from the ABC post this week, there's more water treading with the obvious here at this week's CBS post.

While it is certain that CBS will cancel one of the three shows in the headline to make room for a new drama next Fall (and possibly more if Golden Boy is renewed, or they reduce their drama hours) I'm the first to admit that guessing which of the three is probably my shakiest current prediction on any network.

I have CSI:NY as "likely canceled" based on little more than the fact that its season is ending early (and it's an old, low rated show, but that's nothing new). Would I be surprised if either The Good Wife or The Mentalist is canceled instead? Not one tiny bit. But I was going to make a call by the end of the season anyway, and it's unlikely I will know more before then, so I figured that fortune favors The Bold.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Golden Boy will not be renewed. It’s not even on yet but it’s a dud. The plot is not interesting at all. Neither is the cast. Looks like one of those NBC shows that get cancelled quick. CSI NY has run it’s course a while ago. I find mentalist and good wife unwatchable but critics and some folks like them. While I’m at it Zero Hour will fail too just like that horrid ashley judd show last season with basically the same plot. terrible.

  • Mac Breck

    Do not cancel The Mentalist!

  • John S

It’s time for CSI:NY to kick the bucket. It’s just another formulaic cop show that is PC to a fault. In a city where just 4% of homicides are committed by whites, on this program it’s more like 99.5%. They really jumped the shark a couple of episodes ago where a murder apparently committed by 3 blacks turned out to be 3 white guys in black man masks. I like Sinise as a person but the make-up on him is getting ridiculous. His eyebrows are starting to remind me of Groucho Marx’s.

  • dan Iler

Of course, The Mentalist is in trouble.
Sunday at 10 PM is one foot in the grave to begin with.

  • M. Ross

The Good Wife should definitely go–its just a soap opera dressed up as a drama.

  • pita patti

Why is it a show we look forward to watching is possibly going to be cancelled. We love Vegas, the history of where Vegas began, the vintage cars and most of all an enjoyable show, not another detective, police drama, reality show. Come on those in command, let us keep what we love.

  • Richholsom

Pretty sure the mentalist has already been renewed for a 6th season, actually at the same time it was renewed for a 5th season. That and Simon baker signed a 3 year approx $10M per year deal around the same time. Whoever mentioned Sundays and the football overage was correct, this show killed it in the Thursday night time slot.

  • christa

csi ny should stay for awhile to see where the relashonships go with the team its just getting good with a baby on the way mac going threw what hes going threw i say get rid of the mentelist i heard the good wife was good but not reaLLY into the show so i think u should keep both of em.

  • Larry stone

Explain how you can cancel shows on Sunday night. First it’s the worst time slots you are going against NFL plus delays from NFL. You know the shows will be on just not when due to delays. I thought CBS was above the rest no it’s just that other are that bad. Those 2 shows on Sunday slots is a plan to fail. Nice play its working.

  • jo brown

please do not cancel shows like CSI NY and the Good Wife. They actually have some interest and plot, we’re sick of seeing nothing but tits and ass and people over 12 do like to watch TV also. I hope you realize you’re driving us to the cable stations more and more.

  • Janet

How can any show, even TGW compete with Sunday Football, why no try another night. With over 1 million likes on Facebook, fear CBS will have a lot upset people

  • louise

I REALLY HOPE CSI NY COMES BACK. ONLY DECENT THING TO WATCH ON FRIDAY NIGHTS IN MY OPINION.

  • Richard

The Good Wife is my favorite show on TV and the only legal drama that gets it right! The ratings only began to suffer when CBS moved them to Sunday night. So many people I know stopped watching because the preemptions caused by football made it impossible for their DVR systems to record.

  • Holly

    @Richard,

The ratings only began to suffer when CBS moved them to Sunday night.

Bull. The reason it was moved in the first place was low ratings. It was actually remarkable how little the move hurt the show. It only dropped a few tenths (mostly in the spring), which was no more than expected year-to-year declines.

  • Christa E.

Hope that CSI New York gets to stay. Great show with a great cast

  • Carla Willey

PLEASE DON’T CANCEL CSI NY! i LOVE THIS SHOW & BLUE BLOODS; I WISH YOU HAD HAWAII 5-0 COME ON @ 7PM INSTEAD OF “JOBS”; THEN I WOULD HAVE CBS FOR ALL 3HRS.

  • Tina

Place keep CSI NY ON I love that show

  • Joe

I disagree with Vegas being canceled. Please do not replace it with another reality show; love Good Wife & Mentalist. How do they decide to replace quality with crap??

  • Sherry Lewis

I can’t believe the shows that are cancelled and the really stupid ones that get renewed. So many of them I get into, then there cancelled. Just leave me hanging. They could at least do a last show with some kind of ending.

  • gary d

The Good Wife will always be in danger of cancellation because only those viewers with three digit IQs watch it! Forget the fact that it is probably the best drama on T.V. from writing to directing to acting!
