Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 3, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D. canceled 0.53
90210 :| :| :| 0.59
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.64
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.78
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.83
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 1.03
Supernatural      1.32
Arrow      1.52
Vampire Diaries      1.96

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And given the current ratings for shows on the CW, the last two weeks of 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings for Beauty & The Beast makes it at least a prince. For that reason, I have elevated my prediction for it to likely to be renewed. Fans shouldn't get too excited, if the ratings go back down, so will my prediction. And after getting burned by the late season plunge for The Secret Circle, I'm extra twitchy this season.

If last night's 0.7 rating for The Carrie Diaries isn't just a temporary blip, things are about to get a lot more interesting at the CW. Even I doubt Mark Pedowitz would cancel a show drawing a 0.7 rating, to give a final season to a show drawing a 0.4 rating (90210). And if both The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast can maintain those 0.7's while Hart Of Dixie is stuck at a 0.5, then things get worrisome for HOD fans.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

  • Ames

God suddenly I am very scared for HOD.

  • Ashley

I think they should keep B&B and pair it up on Fridays with Nikita. It might make a good pairing and shore up Fridays a bit

  • Wright

Renew TVD, Arrow and SPN. Cancel the others to give the network a clean slate and a fighting chance. I watch all the shows except EO, 90210 and TCD but I would understand the need to cancel the others to improve the network. I can’t wait for Cult to premiere.

  • Bill Lee

I think that Supernatural needs to do the right thing and make this their last season. The show is in a state of fast decline.

  • SRD

I really hope ratings for Beauty & the Beast continue to improve. I love that show.

  • were123

If TCD holds, 90210 is a gonner. If Cult does well, it’ll be between HoD and B&TB and in the end it’ll come down to 2 scenarios:
    1) If HoD rates even or higher than B&TB it will be renewed and B&TB will be cancelled.
    2) If HoD rates lower (even by a tenth) than B&TB, it will be cancelled while the other gets renewed.
If Cult bombs and TCD keeps rating well, 90210 is a gonner, HoD and B&TB are renewed (unless their ratings go to hell from now on)

  • Wright

SPN is still quality TV. It’s my favorite show on the network followed closely by TVD.

  • Craig

My bigger concern for Beauty and the Beast – and I would have said the same for Secret Circle last year – is The CW should REALLY test and see how it would do on another night, away from the TVD lead-in.

If BATB could pull a 0.7 on, say, a Tuesday night, then by all means, renew.

I’m actually surprised they didn’t try something like that when Cult came on, putting Cult on after TVD for the Matt Davis connection, or something like that.

    As for anything else:

I think Hart Of Dixie will be safe. It’s a well reviewed show, and without having sci-fi elements, I’m sure it’s cheaper to produce. A lot of the new pilots are sci-fi based, and as much as I’d love it if it was, The CW is not a sci-fi network.

I like The Carrie Diaries a lot and I think it’d do well with time to grow, so I say renew.

90210, on the other hand? Unless they intend to reboot it completely midseries, I think it’s a lost cause. Last night’s ratings were horrible and the show is almost laughably bad. I think it’s actually gotten worse, even. They should start writing toward a final episode NOW. They have their 100 episodes; they can call it a day.

  • Percysowner

@Bill Lee I, personally have issues with Supernatural right now, but it’s ratings have gone up and they stay steady. It is NOT in any state of decline. They are the 3rd highest rated show on the CW. They aren’t going anywhere. Also, regardless of my feelings many fans are enjoying Supernatural more than they have in years. The CW would be idiots to cancel one of their highest rated shows, that already has their cast under contract and which make the W part of the network a bunch of money in syndication, DVD sales, Neflix revenue and international sales.

  • Bill Gorman

“My bigger concern for Beauty and the Beast – and I would have said the same for Secret Circle last year – is The CW should REALLY test and see how it would do on another night, away from the TVD lead-in.”

I’m sure the CW is touched by your concern.

No way they move it this season, but next season…

  • Bill Gorman

“God suddenly I am very scared for HOD.”

That’s part of the suddenly interesting situation on the CW.

BATB ratings revival, and the *possible* revival for Carrie Diaries spells bad news for both 90210 and Hart Of Dixie.

  • halloween

    BaTB to Fridays next season

  • halloween

my suggestion is if they renew BaTB, is to do a 13 episode order at first….but if the show falls to .5 in Spring…does the CW cancel it?

  • ragul

at last we have some hope

  • Dave

Like I said before, I really do believe The CW will renew Beauty and the Beast but at this point, it’s totally Friday bound. The only possible way Beauty will be in trouble is if CULT performs well which is doubtful.

Hart of Dixie will be in trouble if The Carrie Diaries continues its upward trend.

90210 should seriously end, plain and simple.

  • Jared

I’ve always said that the CW would renew BATB for a second season. Considering the amount of scifi/fantasy based pilots the CW has ordered for next season BATB could easily be paired up with any of them. If the CW were smart and believed in BATB potential they should reair the first season during the Summer(like they did with HoD last year)and pair it up with a new series like what the network did with Arrow/Supernatural this season.

  • Sarah moss

The CW Network if you want to survive you must cancel all the shows that do not reach 1.0 … Must renew with quality shows!Good 0.7? The only certainty is that the CW network continues to lose viewers have a negative result. Beauty and the Beast is a show mediocre.

  • Joanna

I still think HOD has the advantage. And so will TCD if it holds with .6 and .7 ratings. BaTB is highly lead-in dependent and it would pathetically flop without TVD. That 0.5 was a shame, plus the show is awful, cancel it. Keep HOD and TCD!

  • tv#1

A Possible 2013-2014 CW TV schedule could be…

    *Company Town*
    Hart of Dixie

    *The Selection*

    The Vampire Diaries
    *The Originals*

    Beauty and the Beast

  • Joanna

Plus it will start falling again. This showed is doomed.
