In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And given the current ratings for shows on the CW, the last two weeks of 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings for Beauty & The Beast makes it at least a prince. For that reason, I have elevated my prediction for it to likely to be renewed. Fans shouldn't get too excited, if the ratings go back down, so will my prediction. And after getting burned by the late season plunge for The Secret Circle, I'm extra twitchy this season.

If last night's 0.7 rating for The Carrie Diaries isn't just a temporary blip, things are about to get a lot more interesting at the CW. Even I doubt Mark Pedowitz would cancel a show drawing a 0.7 rating, to give a final season to a show drawing a 0.4 rating (90210). And if both The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast can maintain those 0.7's while Hart Of Dixie is stuck at a 0.5, then things get worrisome for HOD fans.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    ok, the CW is already selling BATB, it’s airing in the Netherlands and probably in other countries too.

    I think they will try to keep it and try it on another evening.

    Although i hope the keep HOD, laf it!

  • Katie

    Love Beauty and the Beast. Had a rough start, but has some a long way! Hoping it gets renewed!

  • Janet Snakehole 3

    Yay this is good! BATB started weak but the show has drastically improved. So many secrets and backstabbing. Plus Cat & Vincent have such great chemistry. I love them.

  • Dillan

    @ali:

    The CW sold Ringer and TSC to many counties last year, it means nothing.

  • halloween

    BatB is a tossup again.

    .7 and above renew
    .6 tossup
    .5 and below cancel

    either TCD or BatB will be renewed

  • Beauty and the flop eaten by the bear

    Should be downgraded after going down this week

  • Beauty and the Flop

    @Wardriver:

    Never watched TSC LMAO. But I heard it was a flop as well. But pathetic Batb fans feel the need to bash fans of a show that isn’t even airing anymore. Cowrd much? A lot of people loathe this pathetic excuse of a tv show called Batb don’t blame it on just one fanbase. It’s worse than that, that’s how much Batb sucks and flops.

  • Martine

    I am very glad for Beauty and the Beast. It deserves this in every way! I have started watching it with some friends recently, some of whom do remember the old tv show( of course they are NOT in the important demographic!) and I think the show has really improved with every episode.

  • Martine

    I don’t think that going to a .6 has changed BatB status in any way. In fact at .6 its still quite a bit ahead of TCD and HOD, which don’t ever go above a .5. But I don’t understand at all. I have never once heard any fans of BatB say anything negative about TSC. Quite the opposite. For some odd reason fans of the Secret Circle have some strange animosity toward Beauty and the Beast, although it makes no sense. Why not be angry at The Carie Diaries, or at any show on the CW? Its not like BatB had anything to do with TSC getting cancelled. Anyhow, BatB is not going to be moved to another night, and Its not going to get cancelled.

  • Charmed

    @Martine HOD got 0.6 this week and TCD got 0.7 this week so there goes your theory.

  • Huh?

    @Joanna; But BatB has never gone bellow .6. What do you mean its going to fall again? Its ratings are very very steady. HoD has been fairly steady at a .5. So why not renew the show that does better overall? The CW doesn’t have any shows that get to a 1.0. Not Supernatural, or even TVD do that. They can’t get rid of all their shows. Don’t you think they should at least hold on to their four best rated shows? That would be TVD, Arrow, SPN, and BaTB right now.
    I mean sure if they had any better shows to put on there…but its not like the Cult is going to get a 1.0…

  • Huh?

    @ Charmed; Yes, I know all the shows did better then usual this week. TCD got a .7 rather then the usual .5. HOD got a .6 rather then the usual .5, and BatB got a .7 rather then the usual .6. But thats just one time. And they still linbe up the same.

  • Huh?

    sorry to barge in conversation.

  • Restless

    @Huh?
    If you’re going to talk about the ratings, you should double check them first. :P
    Beauty and the Beast got a 0.5 for it’s 8th episode.
    The Vampire Diaries has never gone below 1.0 and got a 1.1 this week and both Arrow and Supernatural got a 1.0 this week.

  • Lina

    “But BatB has never gone bellow .6″

    Yes it has, a 0.5. Check the ratings correctly.

    “Anyhow, BatB is not going to be moved to another night, and Its not going to get cancelled.”

    IF it survives, it won’t stay another year after TVD, which is the networks best lead-in. If it survives, it’s bound to be moved. You aren’t thinking straight.

  • JulieDawn

    @Martine

    I’m a diehard BATB fan and proud to be called a Beastie (go on everyone, laugh). But even I have to ask you where on earth you’re getting your numbers from? TCD rated higher in the demo this week than BATB, and HOD did the same. You may want to fact-check before posting.

    However – rest assured BATB will DEFINITELY be going back up next week.

    Here’s some Fan Excuse Bingo for you – getting upgraded to Likely Renewal unfortunately lulled some fans into a sense of comfort, too early. LOL.

  • Tom

    @ Martine You really need to get in step with things, especially if you’re going to cross-post as much as you do. B&B fans are a lot like a cult. They recite the same mantras over and over as if anyone would believe them. That probably comes from spending too many weekends at home alone knitting. Here are some things B&B trolls don’t need to repeat anymore:

    B&B will be going up in the ratings next week – In fact, B&B has dumped about 300k viewers since it returned from hiatus; currently it’s right on the edge of dropping to a 0.5 demo. So, when’s the recovery really starting?

    Fans of the Secret Circle have some strange animosity toward Beauty and the Beast, although it makes no sense – What TSC fans feel has nothing to do with the inability of B&B to hold an audience; the critics of the show typically point to poor acting and bad writing as the reasons B&B is tanking. They’re stuck with KK, but dropping Nina Lisandrello would go a long way toward reducing the ridiculousness that typically characterizes the scenes she’s in.

    The show has really improved with every episode – That’s not reflected in the ratings; what’s really gone on is that the show has focused even more intensely on those parts of the storyline that drive viewers away; and my personal favorite:

    Getting upgraded to “Likely Renewal” lulled some fans into a sense of comfort – Now there’s a revelation; according to that pearl of wisdom, the over 200k viewers B&B lost in the last week are all TVBTN readers who decided not to watch the show despite knowing that’s exactly the thing that would put B&B back in jeopardy of being cancelled. That doesn’t say much for the quality of B&B fans, especially the ones who make excuses for what really goes on. Moreover, this sort of statement is one of the reasons the B&B fans keep getting picked on here.

    I hope you find these comments helpful. Please accept in the spirit they’re being offered.

  • Brandy

    Martinez, if renewed, BatB will move so The Originals spinoff can air after VD.

  • Brianna

    Someone please explain to me why Nikita is likely to get renewed while other shows with continually better ratings have chances of getting cancelled?????

  • Beauty who can’t act and the Flop

    @Tom: you forgot “it won a PCA”, “it’s doing great internationally” and “Mark said…”

    LOL, they’re great Fan Excuse Bingo players.
