Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 3, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D. canceled 0.53
90210 :| :| :| 0.59
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.64
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.78
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.83
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 1.03
Supernatural      1.32
Arrow      1.52
Vampire Diaries      1.96

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And given the current ratings for shows on the CW, the last two weeks of 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings for Beauty & The Beast makes it at least a prince. For that reason, I have elevated my prediction for it to likely to be renewed. Fans shouldn't get too excited, if the ratings go back down, so will my prediction. And after getting burned by the late season plunge for The Secret Circle, I'm extra twitchy this season.

If last night's 0.7 rating for The Carrie Diaries isn't just a temporary blip, things are about to get a lot more interesting at the CW. Even I doubt Mark Pedowitz would cancel a show drawing a 0.7 rating, to give a final season to a show drawing a 0.4 rating (90210). And if both The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast can maintain those 0.7's while Hart Of Dixie is stuck at a 0.5, then things get worrisome for HOD fans.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Billy, Nikita will not be moving off fri either-I’m not sure where you were going to put it

  • halloween

    @Billy martins
TVD stays on Thursdays, its CW top show and ad rates on Thursday are at a premium then
BatB only chance of survival is if Mark thinks it will have an audience on Friday

  • Kelly

90210 will probably get renewed a shortened final season just like GG and OTH were.

  • Brandy

I want to know why Claire Holt hasn’t been signed to The Originals yet.

  • Bizarro

I think she would do better to have a recurring role on The Originals. Hopefully she will stick with TVD, I’m really starting to enjoy Rebecca now!

  • Brandy

@Bizzaro, I like her too but I thinks stupid to have an Originals spinoff NAND not have at very least the three we’ve seen the most:Elijah,Klaus, Rebekah.

  • staceych

The argument about having the best lead in on the network: I don’t believe that VD will help B&B because I don’t think the shows share enough similar content. I think that B&B is more compatable with Nikitta and will probably end up on Fridays next year with it.

  • Richard Steven Hack

I agree with Brandy (did I just say that? :-) ) and Rebecca should be on The Originals. Whether regular or recurring doesn’t really matter too much as long as it’s frequent, but given the setting in New Orleans I would assume Rebecca would be present.

The main problem I have with The Originals concept is that while they have been great villains on TVD, I’m not sure the audience will “warm” to them as the main leads of a show. Certainly if the whole family is on the show, there are enough characters to hold any number of “family drama” plots and could include a number of other plot concepts involving other villains. I’m just not sure enough of the characters are “engaging” enough to hold the general audience in the same way the TVD characters do.

There’s not much comparison, for example, between Stefan, Damon, Elena, Caroline and Bonnie to the Originals in terms of how engaging they are as characters and as actors. Even Damon in season one of TVD was more engaging as the “bad boy” than any of the Originals.

I of course like Rebecca because she’s smokin’ hot. Klaus is somewhat engaging as a douchebag. Elijah is somewhat impressive if a bit stoic. The rest are not that interesting (although Cole has some flair.) If they had Alice Evans as the mother and Sebastian Roche as Michael turn up regularly, that would help – Roche in particular is a superb actor.

I’m sure everyone who watches TVD as a FAN will be watching. I’m just not sure the “general audience” – those people who watch TVD but are not “fans” – will watch.

Also, if the problem with shows that follow TVD is that all the TVD fans rush off to the Net after TVD to discuss the episode, well, those fans will have to wait another hour and stay up late – or push their discussions to the next day. Otherwise even The Originals may not get enough fan audience to hold TVD lead-in. :-)

  • Richard Steven Hack

Staceych: “I don’t believe that VD will help B&B because I don’t think the shows share enough similar content.”

I agree. There’s also the argument that NO show can TVD lead-in because the TVD fans abandon the network for the Internet after every episode. I don’t know if that’s true or how important that actually is vs the general audience, but in any event I don’t see BATB getting any more TVD lead-in than any other show.

“I think that B&B is more compatable with Nikitta and will probably end up on Fridays next year with it.”

I disagree here. I don’t think BATB has anything in common with Nikita other than government conspiracies which doesn’t seem to me to be sufficient given the emphasis on other elements in BATB. Personally I think BATB will not continue to rise or stabilize its ratings UNLESS they emphasis the conspiracy, and if it doesn’t I don’t see it getting renewed. If it is renewed, it will likely be moved to Friday but it will fail dismally there – it’s .5-.6 ratings will drop to .3-.4. It will never see syndication so it will be canceled in a season two.

I don’t really see any reason to renew BATB based on a .5-.6 average rating in season one even if moved to Fridays unless the CW thinks it needs some show on Friday just to pair with Nikita to fill the slot. If it was season two of BATB that might occur, but the low level of ratings for a season one show is just pathetic.

BATB has a lot of problems quality-wise and it’s not certain yet that any of them will be fixed by end of the season. There are a lot of female fans attracted to the love story, but I don’t see that as sufficient to sustain decent ratings and get a renewal.

And the TSC fans REALLY need to go away! I liked TSC, and I think it might have had a shot at getting better in a season two, but that’s HISTORY. Move on, already!

Can someone pull all of this years final Demo ratings for all new episodes aired of TCD, HoD, and BatB and post?

    CW this past week.

    TVD – 1.1
    Arrow & SPN – 1.0
    TCD – 0.7
    BatB & HOD – 0.6
    Nikita – 0.5
    90210 & EOMD – 0.4

  • JJA

I don’t think the CW is trying to pick between HOD or B&TB. HOD will probably get renewed regardless, so long as it continues to score .5s and .6s.

I think the issue is which NEW show (in addition to Arrow) the CW will keep–B&TB, Cult or TCD?

  • DougF

This is a report out that Arrow, Supernatural and Vampire Diaries have all been renewed

  • DougF

    *there instead of this*

  • iMember

The CW has officially renewed TVD, Arrow, and Supernatural!

  • Win

    Thanks guys!
Interesting when put side by side.
Good news about Arrow SPN and tvd!
Wish some bubble shows got some good news today.

  • halloween

I think Arrow will beat TVD for the first time this week, because its Valentine’s Day Thursday and people are out on dates

  • Peter Mazzilli

I think that the tomorrow People could be paired with Nikita last season, on fridays. With Nikita having a lot of 0.5’s, and 0.6’s. While Tomorrow People premieres at a 0.9, and starts to fall till it stabilizes to a 0.7 :*
