In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And given the current ratings for shows on the CW, the last two weeks of 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings for Beauty & The Beast makes it at least a prince. For that reason, I have elevated my prediction for it to likely to be renewed. Fans shouldn't get too excited, if the ratings go back down, so will my prediction. And after getting burned by the late season plunge for The Secret Circle, I'm extra twitchy this season.

If last night's 0.7 rating for The Carrie Diaries isn't just a temporary blip, things are about to get a lot more interesting at the CW. Even I doubt Mark Pedowitz would cancel a show drawing a 0.7 rating, to give a final season to a show drawing a 0.4 rating (90210). And if both The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast can maintain those 0.7's while Hart Of Dixie is stuck at a 0.5, then things get worrisome for HOD fans.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I hope this comes true, I guess we’ve gotta keep working on it.

  • kara

I hate when ppl say BATB is lead in dependent. Its proven that it has a strong supportive fan base. Reason why it won a PCA.

CW is sure pimping the 0.7 rating gain for TCD. But I dont think it will keep that.

  • Jenny

Kara, what difference does it make if it has a strong, supportive fan base? Clearly those fans and those millions of stuffed ballots for the PCAs aren’t translating much to real viewers.

  • kara

Well Jenny, seeing as how its raised in viewers its doing pretty decent for CW standards. So the PCA appears to have helped.

  • gerry

maybe the pca helped, but take TVD away and see what its left with. maybe it is lead-in independent. i guess we’ll find that out if it gets renewed.

  • Tom

Trying to evaluate B&B in terms of total viewership is tricky because number of viewers varies a lot. For example, the show spiked once for episode 5 (1.84 MM/0.7) and then fluctuated at or below 1.59 MM/0.6 until it rebounded two weeks ago with 1.79 MM/0.7. Last week, it dropped to 1.72 MM, but stayed at 0.7. If the past is any indication, the break point between 0.7 and 0.6 for B&B is probably at 1.70 MM viewers. I’m betting that the gains in demo scores over the last two weeks won’t last. The show isn’t particularly well written or acted and viewers will begin dropping out much as many others did at the beginning of the season.

I sure hope Cult does well, this channel really needs some more high-quality programming.

    Version 4.0 has begun: http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/12/09/play-the-elimination-game-page-2/160888/comment-page-54/#comments

    @Sarah Moss

If CW cancelled all of their shows that scored less than a 1.0, then the only show left would be The Vampire Diaries! (If we just base it on ratings this week).

  • Lauren

“BatB will be renewed over HoD. HoD got it second chance already and failed to grow as an audience. So don’t be so sure”

LOL! So, they’ll renew a show losing the half of its audience? Yeah, that makes sense!

Hart Of Dixie ratings are steady (lost 200 000 viewers in a year), has a strong fanbase who watches online ( = money), is cheap to produce, has no promo except 20 sec per week and is close to syndication.

BATB ratings are just awful for a first season with TVD for lead-in.

And I don’t know how BATB could be sure to be renewed when we know even TSC ratings were better last year.

  • Nicole

Beauty and the Beast won an award? honestly we all know how the voting takes place so it’s a big scam. Delete

“I’m betting that the gains in demo scores over the last two weeks won’t last. The show isn’t particularly well written or acted and viewers will begin dropping out much as many others did at the beginning of the season.”

Good old faithful Tom, always here to trash BatB.

  • Raykov

Is there really a big difference between a 0.5 and a 0.7… I mean do the advertisers really care about this two points? If Cult does well, I say HoD get canceled, if Cult flops, they both are gone. I think that ANTM would become a summer series which will open a spot on the schedule. 90210 would probably get a final season. TCD could be pushed again to mid-season, cause I think its production takes longer than the other shows.

  • Lauren

On a network like CW, the difference between 0.5 and 0.7 is REALLY important.

  • James

My guess is 2 out of Cult, Carrie Diaries, 90210, Hart of Dixie, and The Beauty & The Beast will be cancelled and 3 will be renewed. As of right now I think Beauty and The Beast, HoD, and TCD get the renewal. But, Pedowitz likes final seasons and Cult hasn’t premiered yet so IDK.

  • JulieDawn

    @Bill

Thrilled by your cautious optimism for BATB. You are a brave soul, and will be proven correct.

That being said, isn’t it about time the BATB title in article was ‘link-i-cized’ or whatever you do to turn it blue and make it lead to exciting things?

  • Nick

What the CW should do for 2013-2014:

    Mon-
    8: The Selection (new)
    9: Hart of Dixie

    Tue-
    8: The Hundred (new)
    9: Supernatural

    Wed-
    8: Arrow
    9: Beauty & the Beast

    Thu-
    8: The Vampire Diaries
    9: The Originals (new)

    Fri-
    8: Nikita (full final season)
    9: America’s Next Top Model

It may be a dumb move to move Beauty & the Beast behind the CW’s second highest-rated show, but what else are they going to do? Premiering 4 new shows is even worse. The only other shows that fit Arrow better are Supernatural (needed for another night) and Nikita (…Do I really need an explanation?).

  • Nick

    @JulieDawn

That being said, isn’t it about time the BATB title in article was ‘link-i-cized’ or whatever you do to turn it blue and make it lead to exciting things?

It’s called a hyperlink, and there’s already one there. It’s just triggered to appear when the words “Beauty and the Beast” are typed, not Beauty & the Beast. They appear anywhere those words are found (hence Smash’s link appearing in many unrelated press releases), but the software is not smart enough to decipher “and” from “&”.

I may be completely wrong, though. Who knows what goes on with these thingamabobs.

  • JulieDawn

@Nick – thanks, yeah I know what they are and was trying to be funny, I was just blanking on the word hyperlink. Although actually I can’t remember ever seeing it on here, so I guess they type it ‘wrong’ in all the articles lol

Thanks for the info though – you’re right, does anyone really know what goes on?! ;)

  • James

    Prediction:

    Monday
    The Carrie Diaries
    Hart of Dixie

    Tuesday
    The Hundred (new)
    Supernatural

    Wednesday
    Arrow
    The Tomorrow People (new)

    Thursday
    The Vampire Diaries
    The Originals (new)

    Friday
    ANTM/ NIKITA
    The Beauty & The Beast

    Midseason:
Cult ( or if Cult fails then 90210 for 10 eps.)
    Company Town (new)

  • JulieDawn

    @H

Re Tom: at least he managed to do it this time without trashing the BATB actor’s looks or voices.
