In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And given the current ratings for shows on the CW, the last two weeks of 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings for Beauty & The Beast makes it at least a prince. For that reason, I have elevated my prediction for it to likely to be renewed. Fans shouldn't get too excited, if the ratings go back down, so will my prediction. And after getting burned by the late season plunge for The Secret Circle, I'm extra twitchy this season.

If last night's 0.7 rating for The Carrie Diaries isn't just a temporary blip, things are about to get a lot more interesting at the CW. Even I doubt Mark Pedowitz would cancel a show drawing a 0.7 rating, to give a final season to a show drawing a 0.4 rating (90210). And if both The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast can maintain those 0.7's while Hart Of Dixie is stuck at a 0.5, then things get worrisome for HOD fans.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I feel no matter what the haters have to look for a way to bring BATB down. The ratings rise and its the fourth best show on the network and is doing well online and has won a PCA.

BATB fans lets just ignore the haters and keep watching and supporting our show!

  • Lauren

Oh God! Stop with the TCA! Ringer won awards last year and has been cancelled.

What’s the point to win an award if the fanbase doesn’t watch the show?

  • Jared

I wouldn’t under estimate the power of the fans of BATB. This show should have never gotten the back 9..and it did. After the winter break critics thought it would drop..clearly that hasn’t been the case. So a renewal at this point seems very likely.

  • Brandy

I wonder if Beauty and Carrie keep getting 0.7s what that’ll mean for HoD and Nikita.I also wonder if Mark will really bring back any of 90210,HoD,Carrie Diaries next season as they don’t fit his “scifi/fantasy //supernatrual ” brand for next season, though HoD is about adults.I wonder if SPN,Arrow,HoD,VD,CD,batB all get renewed, if hell cancel Nikita. They can renew VD,SPN,Arrow,HoD,Nikita for full seasons, renew CD & BatB for 13 episode seasons and I think they could premiere three new shows in fall, two in Midseason, this is with Cult cancelled.I hope at least a couple of HoD,CD,90210 come back next season, I’ll watch til the end just as I will with 90210.Ill check out The Originals if Rebekahs on it,keep with VD.

U really gonna compare Ringer online poll wins with a PCA?

The ratings have went UP! Its does well in its female demos which is the CW target. RIGHT NOW its doing decently for the CW.

  • Melody

So last week I based my predictions solely on what I wanted. This week I’m going to take a few guesses and base those “educated” guesses on CW’s past and the current ratings situation happening at the CW with my own personal biases thrown in for good measure.

    Canceled:
The Carrie Diaries – I don’t care that the ratings are starting to surge I just don’t believe it will last and I can’t see this show going another season, besides it is time to retire this genre from the network….PLEASE!
90210 – Because this needs to end now, announce that this is the final season and let the writers have time to give it a good send off for the fans.

    Renewed:
Supernatural – For two more seasons, because we fans deserve it and this season has been fantastic. Jeremy Carver has really rejuvenated this show.
The Vampire Diaries – Sadly I hate that I have to put this because I hate the show, but the ratings don’t lie. Besides it makes sense to pair it with the spin off next year.
Nikita – I want this renewal for me because I love the show, besides it’s doing a bit better on Friday night with the move to the earlier timeslot. As we all know this is likely renewed because of syndication anyways.
Arrow – Great show, good ratings for the network and the show gets lots of press…of course it’s coming back.
Beauty and the Beast – Admittedly it could be argued that this show could be canceled, but based on it’s current ratings it’s going to be back.

    On the Bubble:
Hart of Dixie – It breaks my heart to have this show on the bubble because I need my Wilson Bethel smile fix each week, but if Cult does well then another show will be canceled and I sadly predict that this will be the one. Then again Cult could suck and I’ll get to continue to enjoy my Wade and Zoe.

    To Premiere this Month:
Cult – It’s hard to have hope for this show knowing that it’s success will spell the doom for a show I love, then again I’m a huge fan of Robert Knepper and Matt Davis so I will be watching.

  • Dan

I saw move Beauty and the Beast or Cult to Fridays, put The Carrie Diaries and Hart of Dixie together, and give 90210 a final ten episodes to premiere during winter hiatus 2013 or late spring/summer 2014. Either that or wrap it up now.

    Monday:
    The Carrie Diaries
    Hart of Dixie

    Tuesday:
    New Drama
    Supernatural

    Wednesday:
    Arrow
    New Drama

    Thursday:
    The Vampire Diaries
    The Originals

    Friday:
Nikita (wish I could say new drama or something, but we all know this show is getting renewed for one more 22 episode season)
Beauty and the Beast or Cult depending on how it does.

  • Dan

Also, I don’t think a PCA is enough to get any show renewed. Are we going to say that The New Normal is sure to get renewed with a 1.1 ratings because it won the PCA for best new comedy? If B&B gets renewed, it will be because of ratings, NOT a People’s Choice Award.

  • Amanda

    The little show that could…

Anyway for those who keep comparing BATB to TSC, please read this:

“CBS found the right collection of loopholes to make it financially viable. It is a joint production with Take 5 of Toronto and qualifies as Canadian Content which means CBS can charge the Canadian broadcaster a lot more than if it were a US show or even a US show that is filmed in Canada (like The Secret Circle). Those cheap Canadian imports go for so little in the US because they are Canadian Content and the Canadian broadcaster pays a lot for CanCon compared to imports. Since the Canadian broadcaster of BATB doesn’t have a part in making the show it isn’t simply money moving from the left hand to the right hand but is ‘new cash’ to the bottom line. You don’t (ever) find a US company owning/making a show that qualifies as CanCon. It is a bit of a ‘cash cow’ if all the ducks can get aligned.”

  • Sheetal Patel

Really hope Nikita gets renewed. It truly is one one the best shows on the CW. Great writing, amazing cast, and lots of action. I don’t see The Carrie Diaries or HoD having a bright future. In my opinion, the CW will probably cancel 90210 and HoD.

  • Jen

Should I start to get worried for Nikita?

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Should I start to get worried for Nikita?”

No, Nikita ratings are effectively irrelevant this season, and have been all along. It’s almost certainly renewed for next season.

90210 fans are the ones that should be worrying right now. A lot.

If The Carrie Diaries keeps up those 0.7’s and Hart Of Dixie keeps doing 0.5, HOD fans can borrow the worry beads.

  • Bitter Ringer Fan

Things are getting interesting, hopefully Ringer’s revenge will be complete by the end of the season if Flop of Dixie gets canceled!

  • v

PLus Carrie Diaries is new regime show, instead of others that were holdovers.
I still think HOD will likely get Friday burn off.

  • robin

    @kara

well isn’t the PCA’s technically an online poll too. i mean one person can spam the votes as much as they want over and over again.

  • Lauren

Ringer fan, you’re hilarous… or pathetic.

  • Claudia

OMG, who says BATB is dependent of TVD, I could careless of TVD I dont watch any other show in the CW than BATB… they can put this show in the moon and Ill follow it, just go to twitter and the Facebook pages, there is lots of action going on with BATB fans (beasties). Wake up from La La Land people. BATB is surviving and is getting more and more followers

  • Tom

Guys, You’re wasting your time debating the PCA trolls over the significance of their award claims. Mr. Gorman already covered that subject. When it comes to renewing a show, the PCAs meaning nothing. B&B won by at least 10 MM votes over the nearest challenger. However, that level of audience approval has not been reflected in the show’s viewership. Anyone into social media knows that much of voting for B&B was done by relatively few people pounding on the PCA voting button like zombies. It’s also inevitable that anyone that needy is going to end up being fixated by drivel like B&B. So, instead of depriving them of their illusions, let’s give these people their space.

  • Alan

90210 is dropping because of the slot. It was doing fine at 7/8c, I can see it getting renewed no matter how bad the ratings get.

  • Claudia

@TOM, we know PCA will not help to get a show renewed. Most of BATB fans know that, but by winning the PCA will give more publicity to the show and is all we cared to that point. It showed in the ratings after the hiatus, most of the shows specially in the CW get weaker, BATB regained more followers and we Beasties know that because we can see it, we are starting to network a lot, you will be surprised the show for us fans is getting better and better, so dont think any dropping of audience in the near future!
