Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 3, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D. canceled 0.53
90210 :| :| :| 0.59
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.64
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.78
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.83
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 1.03
Supernatural      1.32
Arrow      1.52
Vampire Diaries      1.96

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And given the current ratings for shows on the CW, the last two weeks of 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings for Beauty & The Beast makes it at least a prince. For that reason, I have elevated my prediction for it to likely to be renewed. Fans shouldn't get too excited, if the ratings go back down, so will my prediction. And after getting burned by the late season plunge for The Secret Circle, I'm extra twitchy this season.

If last night's 0.7 rating for The Carrie Diaries isn't just a temporary blip, things are about to get a lot more interesting at the CW. Even I doubt Mark Pedowitz would cancel a show drawing a 0.7 rating, to give a final season to a show drawing a 0.4 rating (90210). And if both The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast can maintain those 0.7's while Hart Of Dixie is stuck at a 0.5, then things get worrisome for HOD fans.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I dont get this TCD ratings are rising. Its had ONE good week, lets wait and see. I cant judge the show as a whole since I dont watch.

I do hope they give 90210 a short season. I think the fans deserve a nice wrap up.

Yes Tom you know it all. *rollleyes*

Beasties we’ve been doing good with ratings AND social media, Lets keep it up!

  • Claudia

So for all the BATB haters, any other show in the CW with less than .6 ratings (HOD, 90210, Nikita, TCD) could make it to another season but not BATB…

  • H

“It’s also inevitable that anyone that needy is going to end up being fixated by drivel like B&B.”

You are either a TSC fan or someone with a vested interest in the entertainment industry where BatB or someone related to the show effects you so negatively to be this hateful. Grow up child.

  • Tom

@ Claudia I’m not discussing the PCAs because of what I previously said. The fact that some other shows on the CW’s weak schedule are still performing poorly isn’t news. As for B&B, if you check, you’ll see that last season both the Secret Circle and Ringer came back strong after being on hiatus for almost two months. That clearly didn’t last. Currently, B&B is taking up valuable real estate after TVD. If it’s renewed, it won’t be in that spot next season. I don’t see the CW going to much trouble to keep around what is inevitably a 0.5/0.6 rated show that can’t retain the TVD’s audience. So, start looking for another group to network with.

  • Tom

@ Tara Re: TCD. Feeling threatened? Good!

  • Lauren

So for all the BATB haters, any other show in the CW with less than .6 ratings (HOD, 90210, Nikita, TCD) could make it to another season but not BATB…

LOL! They don’t have Vampire Diaries for lead-in. Are we supposed to applause because BATB makes more than 0.6 in its good days? It’s still laughable!

  • Sam

lol there seems to be a lot of HoD fanatics hanging here, personally i think BATB is much better show than arrow, tvd, hod, tcd,90210.It has drama, action, romance, fantasy, mystery, etc. Glad it`s doing decent in the ratings.

  • H

TSC is equivalent to this year’s Arrow as far as promotion, expectations and costs for CW is concerned. It isn’t equivalent to BatB. BatB is probably scheduled at one of the most difficult time slots for any network show during the week, so it’s not valuable real estate, but competitive real estate. If it was intended to maintain TVD’s audience then that was a foolish expectation since the shows are likely targeted for different audience preferences, and they haven’t been paying attention to how the TVD fan base likes to spend lots of time discussing episodes immediately after they air. What they most likely were looking for was carrying over some of their audience (not the die-hard TVD fans) while hoping it can pick up a fan base of its own.

  • Tom

@ Claudia I was just beginning to develop some empathy for you and you go and post this: “So for all the BATB haters, any other show in the CW with less than .6 ratings (HOD, 90210, Nikita, TCD) could make it to another season but not BATB… ”

Feigning martyrdom is really bad form. I doubt if many B&B critics (“haters” is impolite) would miss those shows either. Nikita is still on because the suits at the CW want it for syndication. TCD is too new to properly evaluate, but has shown some potential. Deal with it. 90210 is about finished. No mystery there. And HOD should be expendable. However, at least the women on it are attractive. When I first saw Nina Lisandrello, I thought she was cast as the Beast. So, dismount from your high horse and keep it real.

  • Romina

@Tom I think you aren’t considering BATB international fans, we don’t have the opportunity to watch live so we don’t count on the ratings but I can tell you that we are a lot!! So many of the votes for PCA came from there and not only a “few people pounding on the PCA voting button like zombies”. Though winning the award doesn’t mean renewal it does help and BATB viewers are increasing so I think it will be renewed!

  • Dan S

I’m looking forward to the new Cult starting later this month. I think this could be the CW’s Grimm/Revolution that could be a ratings success. Odd pairing with HOD but so what ? They’ve proven they can do well on Tues at 9pm but have yet to find the right show to work on a long term basis.

  • H

“TCD is too new to properly evaluate, but has shown some potential.”

So why’d you evaluate it then? What makes you think it has potential? It’s been four episodes. At least Pedowitz had a bigger sample (not to mention other types of knowledge) to make a more educated judgment about potential than you do when he described BatB’s chances of survival.

“However, at least the women on it are attractive. When I first saw Nina Lisandrello, I thought she was cast as the Beast.”

What are you? A sexually charged teenager? This sounds like more drivel than anything BatB ever put out.

  • Nick

I’m not just saying this because I love 90210 but I have a pretty good feeling it will get a short final season.
The producers announced last week that they were expecting to be notified whether or not it was going to be cancelled. If nothing has been announced in a weeks time I don’t think it’s cancelled. Plus, they’re already filming episode 20 out of the 22 episode season. There’s really no good way to end whatever stories they have going on.
Yes, the ratings have been incredibly low this season but they are steady. The new time slot is probably the reason it’s staying at 0.4’s instead of the 0.5’s it was getting.

I don’t know about TCD…like someone said 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7 probably aren’t enough to make it a profit for the CW because of the NYC location and it takes place in the 80’s.

I think the CW would choose HOD over BATB but I don’t watch either so I don’t really know how to judge the expenses of each. It’s probable that BATB would sink next to HOD levels next season anyway so they might as well just keep HOD’s steady ratings. BATB also has the best lead in the network can give and it’s only getting 0.7’s…not so great.

    I can’t imagine

  • Lauren

“I think you aren’t considering BATB international fans, we don’t have the opportunity to watch live so we don’t count on the ratings but I can tell you that we are a lot!! ”

Same for TVD, Arrow, TCD or Dixie international fans, what do you think?

  • Claudia

@Tom a vivid #BATB fan here, sorry I can be objective when it comes to this, as I said I only watch the CW because of BATB than I could careless about anything else, gave Nikita a try season 1 and 2, not too into season 3, and Arrow sorry I couldnt go on after episode 6. Believe me, I know BATB is not the best show out there it has its flaws, love is blind but I do enjoy BATB a LOT and it has everything I want and mostly I can forget about all its flaws once KK and JR act together, the show has soul and we women love it, and people just need to respect that. I dont bash other shows because I dont like them I just dont watch them.

@Lauren, BATB for a new show, is doing very good internationally which other shows take a little bit longer to consolidate overseas, that happen with TSC never break through internationally, BATB is doing pretty good that also counts is not only ratings there are many things that count for the networks to go ahead or cancel a show.

  • thesnowleopard

I was wondering why you guys hadn’t moved B&tB to likely to be renewed last week, since you usually do that with shows above a 1.0. But I guess you were waiting for that extra data point to be sure.

Of course, it could still drop like a hot rock next week (not bashing the show; that’s just how the CW is in spring). Still, it’s in better shape than it’s been in for a while.

  • Quemesha

This comment is about Emily Owens MD I am so happy that the show got canceled now because she picked Will and not Micah. Like for real anyways I know that it’s just a show……O well its canceled now so whatever I would have stopped watching it just because of her decision. It was just a Show! I have to remember that. The writer of this show made a big mistake Mabel that’s why CW decided to cancel either way now more then ever I feel that CWmade the right choice.

  • Angellica .T.

please renew the secret circle im just being truthful and honest the secret circle is far better than beauty and the beast and had way better ratings

  • Brandy

@Claudia “why do you say other shows getting 0.5-0.6 will be renewed but not BATB”. let’s look att all the shows
CD :freshman show that’s a self starter, with no leadinthat’s ratings are rising and it’s been steady from pilot to episode three 0.6,0.5, 0.5,0.7 that CW is clearly trying to make a hit with tons of promotion, repeats all the time
Hod: steady in season two ,with out much promotion and no leadin, it’s a self starter and closer than the freshman shows to syndication
BatB: a freshman show with the best leadin but has hit a low of 0.5 in the early part of the season ,but has bounced up, it’s doing worse than SC was this time last year and if renewed, it’ll move and Likley crash and Likley will in ratings in season two and still might drop in ratings come spring. It should be doing better than 0.6-0.7 with a leadin that gets 1.2-1.4 at least.CW didn’t try renewing SC and moving it to fri ,figuring its ratings would crash and the same maybe true of BatB.0.5-0.7 in season one isn’t good, HoD was an anomaly.

  • Brandy

Beauty &Beast pilot to episode three ratings 1.2, 0.7, 0.6 , it lost half it’s audience and looses half of VDs audience
