In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And given the current ratings for shows on the CW, the last two weeks of 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings for Beauty & The Beast makes it at least a prince. For that reason, I have elevated my prediction for it to likely to be renewed. Fans shouldn't get too excited, if the ratings go back down, so will my prediction. And after getting burned by the late season plunge for The Secret Circle, I'm extra twitchy this season.

If last night's 0.7 rating for The Carrie Diaries isn't just a temporary blip, things are about to get a lot more interesting at the CW. Even I doubt Mark Pedowitz would cancel a show drawing a 0.7 rating, to give a final season to a show drawing a 0.4 rating (90210). And if both The Carrie Diaries and Beauty & The Beast can maintain those 0.7's while Hart Of Dixie is stuck at a 0.5, then things get worrisome for HOD fans.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Brandy, thats the problem, people think having TVD before BATB is a good thing because depends on TVD. Let me tell you is not. Most of the beasties I talk to anywhere, we are not watching BATB because TVD I could careless about TVD. If the CW decides to move BATB believe me we are all following…you guys would be suprised the amount of followers this show has and it all started like a month ago after the hiatus. And I said this because Ive been a fan since the show didnt even started and being follow every fan page, and its starting to create a movement. The show got better and people starte to take noticed. Just wait and see, we are not teenage girls you all be surprised with the women demographic watching this show.

  • Lauren

“BATB for a new show, is doing very good internationally”

Exactly Ringer fans’ words last year.

  • tara

@Tom ??????? I said TCD had one good week so now I’m threatened? Um No I said wait and see cause it was just ONE WEEK and the ratings as a whole havent been good.

Nice try though ;) Now keep on hating.

  • ariana osgood

How is the carrie diaries not better than Bntb by a large margain? Every episode of bntb is insanely predictable and boring

  • Claudia

@Lauren! Fine, I havent been a fan of a show like this since Roswell, and believe me if it doesnt make it to second season, we will enjoy 22 episodes and move on. We wont be mourning this show, we did everything we could in the right time, and that will be my consolation! Thanks God most of the fanbase for BATB are grown up women, we know how to let go, it just bothers me that this is a post where they are talking about a change of status on a show, and people still come here to bash the show and being negative, while we fans are just trying to enjoy what we like!!!!

@Claudia, I’m also a grown woman fan of Beauty but I’m waiting til May til I declare it certain to be renewed because as things can happen and change in a month or two, ask Ringer and SC fans.

  • Tony JJ

90210 should be cancelled, but being on the CW it could get a very short final season. If I were the CW I would order a VERY VERY short final season 6-8 episodes just to satisfy fans and air it in the summer, maybe mid August to September leading up to the fall premieres in first week of October. The lack of relevance in the summer I think is something the CW lacks so even though 90210 will probably rate low .3-.4 it’s better then nothing and those viewers (although few) could be exposed to their new fall shows with promos. Worth a shot.

Beauty and the Beast will most likely be renewed unless Cult is a smash hit (ratings higher than a .7).

  • Tony JJ

    @BPKK

I was just reading your list and saw H8R, and that reminded me of that show and how I think the CW were way too early to cancel it. Honestly that was a show that could’ve grew into sleeper hit and brought new viewers to the network who usually don’t watch the CW.

(P.S. I wasn’t a fan of the show. Just my opinion on what they should’ve done)

  • Randy

The whole network needs to change it’s approach. The teens, and a little older are just not watching these shows. They are doing other things instead. They really need to do something totally drastic. They need to change the CW’s image or it will be gone for good. Some other company would take over that signal. Cancelling only 3 shows does no good. The CW needs a completely new schedule. For goodness sakes, Cbs is in the abbreviation of the title. You have the most watched network being cbs, and than you have the CW which is like the worst watched network.

To me, the CW should be the all purpose network. Get some cartoons on there like Cartoon Network, get some Disneyish style sitcoms on there, keep 2 teen shows plus a syfy show like Arrow, and than the rest of the network should be more cbsish – a bunch of crime / reality shows. Add a night of baseball on the CW that doesn’t have to be the local team. Expand from 7pm-10pm central nightly instead of having the news at 9pm central. Have new shows on Sunday. Cancel Maury for goodness sakes. All he talks about I have the dna test to prove you slept with blah, blah, and that’s your baby. Every episode, it’s the same topic!

Also, I think some “regular” network really should have either a storage type of show, an auction an item type of show, or a pawn store because so many cable networks are getting such good ratings because of those types of shows. This is whether it should be the CW, CBS, or FOX. Even AMC has a show called Comic Book Men which is sort like a pawn type of store. Store owners buy things in order to sell to make a profit.

The whole CW lineup outside of the top 3 is unpredictable in terms of renewal prospects.

CW will bring back 6 shows minimum for the next season, possibly 7. This is leaving 2 or 3 shows off the schedule as it currently have 9 on the network right now.

I know that The Vampire Diaries, SuperNatural, and ARROW will be renewed w/o a doubt. I will state that Nikita will get a full season pick up making a total 4 shows renewed. If CW renewed Nikita with the ratings last year they would look even more stupid to cancel it this seasons considering syndication is right around the corner.

The Battle Begins with Hart of Dixie, Carrie, 90210, Beauty and the Beast, and CULT!

Right now it is way too early to tell which show will make it to next seasons CW Schedule. I say this because we still have the rest of Winter and Spring to see which shows can maintain, gain, or lose an audience. If recent history comes repeating itself in 2013, a lot of the lineup will be getting much worse. I feel though that this year will be different! Although I don’t believe it gain massive viewers I think shows will hover at a stable audience.

90210 may lose the most steam in Spring as shown in the past. I don’t know how people justify a timeslot or Carrie leadin for 90210 downfalls.. Gossip Girl and 90210 were lucky to get seasons 5 and 6 these shows have been tanking for years!

BATB: To standout a little more I really do think the show would have to continue a stable and decent sized growth throughout the remainder of its freshman season. If it could score 0.8s w/ 0.7s it has a fair shot even w/it losing some of its leadin. TSC completely lost it after February last season.. Batb is totally unpredictable so we’ll have to wait and see! Sure, TSC was higher than BATB at this point but if Beauty can rebound than anything is possible I guess but putting it as certain renewal is not realistic, bubble is more fitting for this show.

Carrie: Again, this show would have to maintain stability and have growth throughout the remaining 13 episodes. A .7 was a nice start. I haven’t seen CD on DVR Rankings due to it repeating a lot on the CW. When repeating(considering how horrible other CW shows repeat) a 0.4 is not too bad especially on Fridays as well as Thursday but also did a 0.3 as well. A 0.7-0.8 would be sufficient in terms of building an audience and giving it a Second Season. If it falls to 0.5, well we know how that turns out!

HOD: A self starter with a terrible gossip girl leadin last season. A lot of people thought HOD was DOA but stability and facts do not lie and it was the only freshman series to get a Sophomore season. Placing this show at 8:00 was not a great idea at all. But what is done is done. The consecutive .5s aren’t a great sign, this really shakes up the whole bubble mix for this struggling net.

90210: Personally ratings are beyond Putrid, but I’m not an exec so who cares what I babble on about. Who knows what the CW will do with this show.

CULT: Really haven’t heard much buzz, actually any buzz would be the correct statement! A 9:00 timeslot matched with Hart of Dixie? But thats the last concern of mine with the CW. More bizarre things have happened in the CW past dating all the way back to 2006. I will check this show out no matter what and form my own opinion. I hope it really surprises viewers and proves that a lot of critics are uptight bores who really don’t understand the true value of entertainment. But will this show be the CW version of NBCs DO NO HARM? The prospects for 2013-14 lineup could shift a lot if this bombs out the gate.

I think everybody needs to take a deep breath, enjoy this unpleasant, bumpy, tv circus show of a ride all the way to the CW upfronts in May. This expression shouldn’t be taken lightly as this will truly reflect all the bubble shows and the possiblities of making it to another season:

    “ONLY TIME WILL TELL”

and to the rest of you fighting over your “favorite” shows “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”. Although I don’t watch every CW show I still root for the lineup in general so why tear eachother down. Do I want my shows to make it next year more than others I don’t watch.. Well Yeah.. But I don’t purposely go crazy and then start to throw even more delusional theories, defending said shows to get renewed! Get a Grip People :)

Too bad there’s no edit button on this site. I seem to have hit the submit button way too soon. Looking at last year’s season averages, the CW renewed 6 shows with ratings lower than TSC. If Nikita with its 0.5 demo gets renewed over Circle with its 0.8, how can people be predicting what the network will cancel or renew just based on the overnight ratings, especially since all the content is owned by the network. Pedowitz also has said that overnight ratings have little meaning for his network and they look at things in the aggregate including digital platforms so unless people know each show’s production costs, and what its online views, iTunes and international sales are bringing in for either CBS Studios or Warner Brothers, who can say which of the 0.3-0.7 shows will get renewed. Also does anyone know how the two owners divide up the available time slots? Right now 90210 and BATB seem to be the only CBS Studio produced shows on the network. Does that factor into renewal or pilot pickup decisions? As for international sales of CW shows, CBS 3rd quarter earnings report toted the international sales of Vegas, Elementary, and Beauty. Vegas and Elementary were sold for over $2 million per episode making them immediately profitable franchises according to the report while Beauty was sold for over $1.5 million an episode in the international marketplace. No mention was made of the other 2 new CBS Studio dramas Emily Owens and Made in Jersey, and both of course were cancelled mid-season.

    1 Vampire Diaries(renewed) 1.3 (1.29) 2.81
    2 ANTM (renewed) 0.8 (0.81) 1.84
    3 Secret Circle(cancelled) 0.8 (0.77) 1.83
    4 One Tree Hill (ended) 0.8 (0.75) 1.46
    5 Supernatural (renewed) 0.7 (0.73) 1.73
    6 90210 (renewed) 0.7 (0.70) 1.34
    7 Hart of Dixie (renewed) 0.6 (0.64) 1.57
    8 Ringer (cancelled) 0.6 (0.61) 1.49
    9 Gossip Girl (renewed) 0.6 (0.59) 1.18
    10 America’s Next Top Model 0.5 (0.53) 1.14
    11 H8R (cancelled) 0.5 (0.50) 1.19
    11 Nikita (renewed) 0.5 (0.50) 1.54

And I wouldn’t pay a dime for any Batb’s crap. Let alone networks would pay 1m for it LOOOL.

    @BPKK
I don’t see much mystery about TSC’s cancellation. It was down to 0.5s in its last month, in its first season, on after the network’s biggest show, which wasn’t much better than Nikita and was a lot worse than Supernatural, both of which were on Fridays. The CW doesn’t take fall ratings much (if at all) into account for renewals and late spring drops have doomed shows in the past that were doing okay up until early spring.

Whether the CW should have renewed Nikita for this season is a matter of opinion. The important thing is that the network did, so they’re more or less committed to the show until it hits a certain syndication number. At this point, it can get much lower ratings than other shows and still get that fourth season (though its crappy ratings do make a fifth season or a move to a better time slot very unlikely).

Either way, it’s unlikely that TSC would have been doing much better if it were renewed and that could easily have resulted in a Life Unexpected situation where it didn’t get a full second season. Its ratings were bad. That’s why it got canceled. It’s more a question of why they renewed Nikita than of why they canceled TSC.

Beauty and the beast? Beast is more beautiful, clear!

  • Richard Steven Hack

I agree that if TCD and BATB MAINTAIN their .7’s, they are better off than HoD.

However, frankly, I doubt either one of them will do so. I suspect by end of their seasonal runs, they’ll be back down to .5’s.

BATB at least MIGHT have a shot IF they continue to bring back the conpiracy over the police procedural plots and the love story. If they don’t, they’ll drop again.

TCD, however, is the “old CW” and I suspect it’s rise is merely a reaction to how badly 90210 is doing, for the 90210 fans of “teen romance drama.” That probably won’t last.

Nikita – once again for the retarded:

    1) We all KNOW the ratings are bad, so stick a sock in it.

    2) .4 on a Friday is as good as 90210’s .5 on a week night.

    3) Since the goal is studio overseas syndication, those ratings are IRRELEVANT in any case.

As an aside, I keep hearing about “The Cult”. When the hell is this thing going to premiere – 2014? If they don’t air soon, they will “die very badly” just because there’s no time to air anything but one episode! :-)

  • Richard Steven Hack

BPKK: “If Nikita with its 0.5 demo gets renewed over Circle with its 0.8, how can people be predicting what the network will cancel or renew just based on the overnight ratings, especially since all the content is owned by the network.”

Wrong. Nikita is an ANOMALY. It can’t be compared to anything else. The apparent reason for its renewal was solely for overseas syndication in markets where Maggie Q is a big star. That has nothing whatever to do with TSC.

Personally I think TSC could have been retooled and gotten a second season and done not much worse than the performance of some of the CW’s shows this season. But that’s just me. It wasn’t, it’s gone, it’s over.

“Beauty and the beast? Beast is more beautiful, clear!”

    You’re probably a closeted homosexual, that’s why.

@Tom – You’re doing it again. You tell Claudia she’s impolite for referring to BATB critics as ‘haters’, yet in an earlier post you referred to BATB fans as ‘zombies’. Then you go on to once again say something cruel and childish about one of the show’s actresses.

When it comes to you, I’m not even angry, I’m mystified.
