After the first three weeks of The Following ratings of 3.2, 3.3, 2.9 (preliminary, not in the calculation above) I'm elevating it to certain to be renewed.
Could it still take a dive, ala Alcatraz last spring, and be canceled? Of course. And if it does, I will move my prediction down, just like I did with Alcatraz. Stay tuned.

The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.
From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old" Fall predictions in the table.
Notes:
-
- certain to be cancelled by May, 2013 -
- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013 -
- toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013 -
- more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013 -
- certain to be renewed by May, 2013
The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).
(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

The Following is a riveting show! ;-D

Why don’t you like it?
After Mindy’s 1.9 this week, it should be upgraded to LIKELY TO BE RENEWED.
What did Fox have on Wednesday and Thursdays in the fall before X Factor?
After that NBC joke from Raising Hope it deserves to be renewed for eternity.
@Samuel
Until Fall 2010, Idol’s slot was filled by So You Think You Can Dance. However, due to SYTYCD’s falling ratings and Idol’s changing from Tue/Wed to Wed/Thu, 2010-2011 had to have some scheduling craziness.
In fall 2010 the schedule was like this:
Wed-
8: Human Target
9: Hell’s Kitchen
Thu-
8: Bones
9: Fringe
When Idol returned, HK and Human Target had already completed thier seasons, Bones moved to 9 pm, and Fringe moved to Fridays.
It seems safe to assume that Touch will fold; it might get to burn off all of its episodes before Fox finally takes it out into the woods and buries it forever, but what are the odds that all the viewers who avoided it so thoroughly last season are going to say, “Oh, now that it’s on Fridays, I suddenly feel like watching it”?
It ended its first season with next to no audience, and if the past few years have proven anything about Nielsen viewers, it’s that once they’re gone, they’re gone.
“The Following” is far superior to “Alcatraz” in writing, acting, and directing – so I think it’ll stabilize (unlike Alcatraz). As I much as I love science fiction as well, any show containing it ends up having a rough time regardless of quality (something Alcatraz lacked). The next two weeks will be the real test for “The Following”. I’m thinking it will stabilize, but I didn’t expect a drop to a 2.9 after the second episode saw an increase to a 3.3 from the pilots 3.2. Yes, I know CBS was in repeats…but I still didn’t expect it to drop below a 3.0. Still, I think it will stabilize. But time will tell. The next two weeks will be crucial. By episode 5 Alcatraz was down to a 1.9 in the key demo. I don’t see this happening to “The Following” but ya never know. “The Following” also will benefit by the fact that there are absolutely no hiatus’s. Shall be interesting.
Excuse me, is glee “rating” 1.36 or 1.16? It’s between 1.46 and 1.22, so I’m confused. Thank you.

Whoops! I hadn’t resorted the table before I posted it.
The numbers were correct, and the table is now properly sorted.
It just occurred to me how few scripted shows are on fox schedule. Excluding animated series, there’s just a bunch of scripted shows, i count 6 currenty airing. Why is that?
@ Bill: you must have noticed that, as a consequence, fox outing is the least commented index on this site… has fox simply given up on scripted shows afther last year whole Terranova/Fringe/Alcatraz/touche debacle?
@Janice

If you arbitrarily excluded a bunch of FOX’s shows, of course it’s going to seem like they don’t have very many.
Also, they have seven fewer hours of primetime than the other major networks.
I really hope the mindy project gets renewed. Its crazy funny and probably my favorite show right now.
I really dont like glee. I used to watch it and it was good in the beginning but now its just a mess. Cant stand it.
A Possible Fox 2013-2014 TV schedule could be…
Mon:
*Boomerang*
Bones
Tue:
*Delirium*
Glee
Wed:
The X-Factor
Thur:
The X-Factor Results
New Girl
*Friends and Family*
Fri:
Kitchen Nightmares
Raising Hope
The Mindy Project
Sun:
The Simpsons
Bob’s Burgers
Family Guy
American Dad
Mid-Season:
American Idol
The Following
*Rake*
*Dads*
Please Fox – cancel “The Following”, watched the first show & turned it off before the end. Enough blood on the news, don’t need this much more…
The Following is such a horrible show. How is it not cancelled?
