2/8 Update: To no one's surprise, Do No Harm was canceled.
-
While it's blindingly obvious that Do No Harm is certain to be canceled after the lowest premiere rating in history for any scripted show on the big 4 broadcast networks, the SEO gods demand I get the name into a headline before NBC yanks it from the schedule.

The gods now satisfied, I can turn to NBC's sitcom mess full time next week.

I was going to hold off on a wholesale revisiting of NBC sitcom predictions until after Community premiered this week, but their continuing ratings free fall has caused me to move up my timeline. While future ratings are guaranteed to move these predictions around further, I decided to move a few predictions this week. The collapse of The New Normal ratings have dropped its prediction to likely to be canceled. Similarly, the collapse of Go On ratings have it downgraded to a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation. Could The Voice return in March and buoy both enough to save them? Perhaps, but I'll move my predictions up if it does.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the NBC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@ Oliver, they were actually kept as winter filler between the fall and midseason airings of DWTS results and Lost respectively. If they were ABC’s plan B for Wednesdays they would have used one of them to replace Hank when ABC pulled it from the schedule after airing 5 episodes.

DNH was put in the time slot that Rock Center was in, PLUS it competed/competes with Elementary AND Scandal, 2 already solid shows. NBC made a huge mistake doing that, and if DNH does as bad again, NBC only as themselves to blame. This coming from someone who really enjoyed it. Most of the reviews I saw were in DNH’s favor. Only NBC can allow their own show to fail.

  • diane

I was very interested in the first showing of do no harm…do not cancel

  • Oliver

Courteney Cox has been announced as a guest star on Goon. Bringing out the big guns in a desperate attempt to stave off cancellation.

  • SJ

I made the mistake of watching the pilot for Do No Harm between the pilots of The Americans and The Following. DNH might be a good show, but sandwiched between those two, it seemed more than a little bland, to put it mildly.

  • NJ Viewer

NBC should bring back Star Trek.

  • Dan

@Bill – My guess is despite Go On and New Normal’s “Fox and ABC tuesday comedy like ratings”, my guess is that The Voice will Save them. Also while Both tuesday shows have terrible numbers so do Whitney, Up All Night, Guys With Kids, 1600 Penn and veterans Office and 30 Rock are ending. Its unlikely NBC cancels all of their struggling comedies, thats why Go On and New Normal have somewhat of a better chance. Of course ratings will ultimately determine everything, NBC needs to use something to rebuild thursdays.

  • Dan

The question seems to be, what will replace Do No Harm, maybe Grimm? Or next season Chicago Fire Or Parenttgood. Definitely not a new show and definitely not Rock Center.

  • Marlene

I wish NBC gave Deception. A. Seconds shot !

  • Brian

Is that the first time you’ve had one smiley face on a show after one week?

Bigger surprise: The resiliency of Whitney (looking at those numbers sounds like NBC would be dumb to cancel it) or having Guys with Kids rank ahead of The New Normal and virtually tied with 1600 Penn?

@ If you are serious about wanting networks improve their ratings you would offer suggestions instead of saying this sucks and that sucks, offer suggestions, also this suggestion goes to Bill Gorman .

“@ If you are serious about wanting networks improve their ratings you would offer suggestions instead of saying this sucks and that sucks, offer suggestions, also this suggestion goes to Bill Gorman”

If you’re delusional enough to think that comments on a website (or the original post itself, for that matter) are for anything but fun (and for us a little money), then you are the one who needs some “serious” help.

  • senor chang

    renew:
Chicago Fire, SVU, Parenthood, Revolution, and Grimm on the drama side.
Parks, Whitney/UAN (whichever does better – midseason), Go On (midseason), and Community (if it does well) on the comedy side.

    cancel everything else.

“Is that the first time you’ve had one smiley face on a show after one week?”

    No.

Probably everything below .89 will not be renewed, but I hope GWK gets a chance.

  • Nick

    @Bill

How can Go On be 0.13 ahead of The New Normal? Aren’t they within a few ratings points of each other?

  • Tommy M.

@ bruce, I did offer a suggestion, cancel all the comedies and start from scratch. Just because you don’t like my suggestion doesn’t mean that it doesn’t qualify as one…lol

  • KJ Styles

@Bill- You should do a pic sometime of a bear chasing a peacock. After all, NBC stands for New Bear Chow.

  • me

I’d really miss TNN. It’s well written and I care greatly for the characters.
