Will the 'Smash' Premiere Be a Smash or a Bomb(shell)?- Poll

Smash premiered to a big 3.8 adults 18-49 rating on February 6, 2012, following The Voice. It was supposed to be NBC's big prestigious hit. Instead, ratings fell steadily, hitting a 1.8 for its May 14 season finale. Tonight it returns with a two hour premiere. The show has been retooled, with a new showrunner (Josh Safran, formerly of "Gossip Girl"). Some unpopular characters have been jettisoned -- goodbye Ellis and Leo. New characters have been added, including one played by Jennifer Hudson. So will viewers give the show a second chance? Make your predictions below.

@Oliver @DanaK Not sure if either of you watched the show (or will even see this), but the number Ivy sang at the Gala is what I want to see more of this season. Megan Hilty’s voice is absolutely incredible.

I watched the show on Tuesday night, and I was entertained by it. Isn’t that the reason we watch TV shows, for the entertainment? Some people say the show is not believable, but honestly how often do people break out into song and dance in regular, everyday life? That said, I did like the new characters that have been added along with the new twists in the story for this season. My TV hasn’t been on for a Tuesday night show since ‘The Voice’ finale in December. I’m hoping for some ratings at least on par with Parenthood.

@James (2/5 at 9:29 AM): You took the words right out of my mouth! Without ‘The Voice’ for a piggyback ride, ‘Smash’ will most likely crash long before the spring ‘Voice’ premiere, and it could be in danger of getting axed. I’ll bet no more than 2.4 for its season debut, even with Betty White’s 91st birthday as a lead-in.

The season premiere was fantastic! Season 1 was great but Season 2 is shaping up to be even better! Ideally I’d love it to bounce up to a 2.5…

    But realistically, it’ll get a 1.7…

    SMASH – 5.69 million (1.7/5)
    SMASH – 4.38 million (1.3/4)

    Joe,
Are those Smash numbers for each hour?

There was some pretty strong competition last night. Maybe it will perk up a little when it’s in its regular timeslot and the competition is weaker. Hopefully, the fans can just enjoy the season at least.

For a show about a Broadway Misical, I doesn’t have enough singing numbers. I do like the singing voice of Jennifer Hudson, Kat McPhee, & Megan Hilty.

Can someone tell me where “ Smash “ on NBC is going to be in the schedule going forward?
What night and time? What show is its lead in? What its competition on other networks will be?
Is it not going to be on next week because of the State of The Union address?

  • DenverDean

SMASH dropped each half-hour. Regular episodes of network series are NOT strong competition, unlike ABC’s PR and fan excuse bingo. NCIS:LA is not a powerhouse, certainly nothing on ABC or FOX. Vegas? Please. It appears SMASH couldn’t even hold BW’s lead-in and that’s going up against NCIS. The trend line was down, down, down last Spring even with TV lead-in. NBC made a serious error in delaying TV until end of March, airing those Grimm episodes in August and pulling Revolution. The current line-up is incredibly weak.

Haven’t watched it yet but I’ll stream it some time today. I heard Ellis will be back, nuts. Can’t stand that guy. I think the fiance/boyfriend should go too, if he hasn’t already. But he has a couple storylines that didn’t finish yet from last season, so he’ll probably at least be on a while. Looking forward to season two. I liked last season, although some episodes felt like chores to watch (but that’s why I watch very few hour-long shows…I’m mostly into half hour sitcoms). Overall it was good. I bet it gets at least a 2.0 for the premiere.

I don’t care about the ratings, there’s one thing that i’m sure of : I’ll be there to watch it !

  • Rebecca

    @HoneyBadger
It is on next week. It’s the only one of my shows to be on that night, so it starts after the SOTU address ends. It’ll be on Tuesdays at 10 pm EST/PST, at least through the end of March thus far (according to futoncritic’s site). It’s on opposite Body of Proof, Vegas, Justified, White Collar, and Cougar Town, just from what show names I recognize for the 2/19 listings at 10 pm.

  • Rebecca

Actually, scratch that – Smash doesn’t appear to be in the listings for next Tuesday. So it won’t be on the night of the SOTU.

  • DanaK

Rebecca, Ellis is not expected to be back except maybe name-dropped. Karen’s boyfriend is gone.

Honey Badger, Smash’s regular timeslot will be Tuesdays at 10pm. For now, its lead in appears to be The New Normal. It will regularly be up against CBS’ Vegas (demo numbers not great) and ABC’s Body of Proof (last season’s demo numbers not great). CBS will preempt Vegas for two weeks at the end of Feb/beginning of March for Golden Boy before it goes to Fridays.

  • Honey Badger

    @ Rebecca, Thank You
Do you know what Smash leadin show will be?

  • Honey Badger

    @ DanaK , Thank You

It looks like “ Smash “ is in a difficult spot.
Tuesdays at 10 pm EST is not a good time slot for ratings. The good news the other networks shows at this time slot do not have great demo numbers. “It will regularly be up against CBS’ Vegas (demo numbers not great) and ABC’s Body of Proof (last season’s demo numbers not great).”
It has a terrible lead-in “ The New Normal “ with low and dropping demo numbers.
It is going to skip a week, which is never a good idea after the season premiere of a show.
And it is going against Golden Boy on CBS for a month. Does anyone know anything about Golden Boy?
“ CBS will preempt Vegas for two weeks at the end of Feb/beginning of March for Golden Boy before it goes to Fridays. “

I am now thinking last night’s season premiere of “ Smash “ will set the tone for ratings going forward. I think the show’s ratings will decrease from there, so it is very important for NBC to get a great start with great ratings for last nights season premiere of “ Smash “

  • DenverDean

@Honey Badger – the initial ratings are out – see earlier posts. Smash bombed.

  • BigBrotherFan

i told you all it would TANK!

  • Honey Badger

@ DenverDean Thank You, I somehow missed that.

Wow, Yipes for Smash, those are very low ratings for such a heavily promoted show. And half hour ratings dropping is a very bad sign.
I think the ratings for “ Smash “ will only get lower from here. With a bad time slot with a weak lead-in.
Good thing “ Smash “ is not on CBS or it would be cancelled already. The Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear , is ready for NBC to cancel “Smash “ , it is just a matter of when.

What does NBC do with “ Smash “ now?
