Following are excerpts from today’s coverage:
(NICK SABAN ON NEW RECRUITING RULES):
I think it will change a lot if we have unlimited texting and unlimited communication. I’m really not for some of these rules that allow you to talk to juniors. I don’t know how a guy would ever go to class. I don’t know how a guy would ever be able to sit in class and not be getting texts all the time. I think we have a pretty good system and I don’t know why we continually want to change it and tweak it. I think it works pretty well and everybody has a fair opportunity.
(BRADY HOKE ON THE RECRUITING BATTLE IN OHIO):
For us, recruiting the state of Ohio, you’re always going to have those fights, if you want to call them that. But I think because of the way our guys went out and recruited, and because obviously we’ve had some tremendous football players from the state of Ohio play at the University of Michigan, we are very welcomed in the state by the high schools, and the high school association there. And that probably is where most of our battles will always be fought.
(BILL O’BRIEN ON EVALUATING RECRUITS):
We brought in the draft system that we used in New England and tried to basically make it where it applied to college football. And it took a long time to really get that done, it took months of tweaking it and making sure that we’re all on the same page, and seeing it through the same set of eyes, and we’re still working on that. But we had a staff that really bought into it and really worked hard at the process. And we made some mistakes early on in evaluating, and then we corrected it. We just kept working at it, and I think at the end of the day, we came up with the best 17 guys. 12 that signed today, and then 5 that came here in January that count back to 2012. The best 17 guys that fit our football program here at Penn State, and I think you owe a lot to the assistant coaches for doing the process the correct way.
(TOM LEMMING ON GUS MALZAHN AND AUBURN):
He’s doing a great job. I’ve known Coach for a while when he was a high school coach in Arkansas, and did a great job. He had Mitch Mustain as a quarterback one year. I think he’s just a tremendous recruiter. And when he’s given a full year, Auburn is now going to be able to challenge Alabama.
(KYLE FLOOD ON CHANGING RECRUITING FOOTPRINT WITH MOVE TO BIG TEN):
I think our recruiting footprint is correct. I think it’s the right recruiting footprint for us, but I think what happens when you move to a different league and you play some games in the Midwest, there’s going to be a natural interest with some of the football players and student-athletes out there, in your institution. It opens up opportunities.
(DAN MULLEN ON RECRUITING MOMENTUM AFTER WINNING THE EGG BOWL):
A lot of people every year say, ‘Boy, is this one game going to change recruiting, and change how things go?’ And I’ll be honest with you, we’ve won the Egg Bowl (against Ole Miss) and lost the recruiting in-state battle, and lost the Egg Bowl and won the in-state recruiting battle, so I don’t think that one games has a whole lot to do with it.
