Like it or not, Port Charles is a part of General Hospital’s history so with Lucy returning, it made perfect sense for them to address the vampire story. The way it was introduced and woven into the other stories has me intrigued and curious to see how this plays out. Okay we know vampires are folklore but so was Mikkos Cassidine and his weather control back in 1981. Did Viki go to Heaven on OLTL? Twice I think. Did we have the underground city of Eterna? Didn’t Myrtle Fargate marry Santa Claus on AMC? We’re often asked to stretch our imaginations in the name of good entertainment.

Trust Frank and Ron. They haven’t let us down yet. I believe in them. I also think they’ve heard of this recent movie series that’s generated millions of fans and dollars. Anyone see the Twilight movies???

    I love GH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • jonboyelk

Not opposed to this vampire storyline but they could have eased into it better. It seems like they assumed everyone knew the background. I, for one, did not and might be enjoying it more if they’d done a series of flashbacks with key points from PC. I only recall one brief clip.

  • James Michael

jonboyelk makes an excellent point. Since I was familiar with the storyline on PC, I got it immediately. Flashbacks from PC would definitely have helped the unfamiliar watchers. Spending Sunday watching last weeks GH’s episodes. Just finished last Monday’s and Lucy, Todd and Heather are a hoot!!! Ready for the next four!

  • Mike

JayTN — great points about B&B and the online presence. It never has had a big one, and I rarely find anyone online who enjoys it as much as I do. But I do in real life.

As to the supernatural stories thing, etc., I don’t care who has written them I have never enjoyed them. I didn’t like when Agnes Nixon did the possession thing on Loving, or the possession on Days by James Reilly, and on and on. Give me the days of bed hopping, business stories, triangles, on the run stories, trials, murders, etc. — stories based in realism.

If a soap starts out as a supernatural soap like Dark Shadows or Passions or True Blood then okay. I loved all those shows, but that is what they were and were supposed to be.

I a whole lot more loved GH with Luke and Laura on the run from the mob. I hated the Ice Princess story. I hated Casey the Alien. But so many of the other stories during the 80s on GH were my faves esp. the Rick/Monica/Alan/lesley quad and so on.

I am glad that people out there like them, but they are just not for me. Not into all the campy, supernatural stuff in my soaps.

  • Kelby

Mike I totally agree with your statements in regard to supernatural/science fiction plots on soaps. Y&R and DOOL still stink!

  • JayTN

Mike…I agree about the supernatural aspects of soaps, however, I really did not have a problem with the Satanic possession storyline on “Days” (I’m not familiar with the “Loving” possession storyline), as I personally believe that such possession can and does occur. Aside from that, “Dark Shadows” is my most favorite soap, even though it was before my time, I did watch it when it was rerun on the Sci-Fi Channel.

I would love to have a daytime soap set in New Orleans and take advantage of the colorful image of the city by incorporating black magic/voodoo as well as spirits and religious high priests/priestesses into the storylines…kind of like a modern day version of “Dark Shadows”. If the broadcast nets ever want to launch a new soap (which I’m still not convinced will ever happen), this could be a good starting point.

  • Ray

I never watched Port Charles, but I seem to be following the story fine with what they’ve told us so far. But if you really want to dig into what happend before, the final episodes of Port Charles are online on you tube.

I think it’s great that GH isn’t just glossing over the fact that John, Sam, and Tomas Delgado were all played by actors who already had a huge impact in Port Charles as Keleb, Livvy and Lorenzo Alcazar. Most shows would have just ignored that little fact, but they totally surprised my by tackling it head on and using it to their advantage. Very few shows surprise me these days, so I’m glad GH is keeping me guessing. Even if this plot turns out to be a train wreck, I have to admit I’m totally fascinated by it. I’d rather see a vampire stroll into town than yet another baby switching story… or another “I don’t know who the father of my baby is” story.

Besides, the fans said they wanted the powers that be to respect the older characters and their history. I would rather they address Lucy’s history than get into the habit of ignoring a character’s past just because it’s not convenient to a current story.

  • James Michael

I came up with Dark Shadows. I’ve read how this show was not noteworthy until the introduction of a character named Barnabas Collins. Suddenly the show took off and became a hit. Different time, different era and I pretty sure GH won’t stick with the supernaturally toned stories. However, the one thing this storyline has done is get people talking. This is how you get people to tune in. Laura is back this week and even more to come.

Look at GH’s ratings increase compared to last year. Proof positive that when you tell great stories, people will watch. It’s the buzz that get folks back. I firmly believe GH will be number one.

I adored Y&R, but they lost me. Last few times I watched,a snore. I’ve heard no buzz that’s made me want to tune in. Is there anything happening that’s cant miss?

  • Derrick

James Michael, the bullying storyline is excellent (in my opinion!)
The dialogue has gotten better on the show!

  • jonboyelk

@ray thanks, I will try to find those Port Charles episodes? Are they on YouTube?

  • Pat

There is a LOT right on Y and R now, and the ratings are showing that people are sticking with it during the changes.

I’m liking the direction that Josh is taking with his writing. Slow and steady, and taking time to redefine any characters that were misused under the old writers.

I think Feb will continue to be a strong month for it. Exciting!

  • cab

And the Award for best soap goes to…..Days of our LIves. What a big change. Kristen is vicious, Chole underhanded, Nicole a looney trouble maker. The Will and Sonny storyline deserves attention and honors. Written very well and could have easily been between a male and female storylkine. Usually, gay storylines are played as funny or not in the spotlight as much, or it ends up yeap errr no he is sraight. The Days writers deserve a huge award. The Kristne and Brady storyline really hits home, wake up Brady. Marlena you are too smart to be out witted by this crazy person. John get a clue. Marlena was trying to protect you. Nick what are you up to? You deserve to go back to jail. I can go on and on. Wow can not wait to see what happens next.

  • jonboyelk

Just feel that GH should have showed a little background on this Allison character before bringing her on and killing her off in two episodes. I didn’t know anything about this person so I didn’t care that she was murdered. I just think they kinda rushed into the storyline.

  • David

Other than someone posting on IMDB(and it was just someone posting the info) there has been nothing said about ABC wanting GH to go to Prospect Park, just another way for the haters to make the show look bad

  • Harlee

Y&R was outstanding that week and keeps getting better. I can’t wait to see next week and hope the keep up the good work. They should be awarded some good news after hack MAB…..I know there’s a Pferrando someone on here?

  • Pat

    Harlee…that’d be me… :-)

  • Kayla Rae

I’m with you, Cab…Days is simply must-see tv…definitely the BEST soap on television!

I like your idea for a soap set in New Orleans, Jay!

  • Mike

I like Jay’s idea too. I have always been fascinated by New Orleans and shows set there.

I loved years ago when Days did the story set there.
