Up All Night is switching formats from single-camera to multi-camera. The series has also changed showrunners multiple times. Now the show will have to recast. The series star Christina Applegate has decided to leave the show, Deadline reports. NBC is allegedly still determined to proceed with the show, which has yet to film any of its multi-camera episodes, and is considering Lisa Kudrow as a replacement for Applegate. May we humbly suggest that NBC think outside the box and consider recent Suburgatory guest star The Cancellation Bear for the role?

    What a mess…

WHAT?! That’s it, I’m done with the show: I loved Up all Night, but I won’t watch it if Christina Applegate is not there, that will ruin the show! I’ll have to pretend the wedding episode was the series finale (and quite a good one)

  • Oliver

I mean for this season, not next. Something needs to air in Guys With Kid’s timeslot and there’s only 3 episodes of GWK remaining.

Season one was great. This retooled season two was awful. The new multi-camera format sounded like it would take things from bad to worse. And now Applegate leaves?

I just removed this from the DVR.

    a HOT mess.

Lisa, girl run far far away.

Why is NBC trying so hard to make Up All Night work??..does anybody even miss it? Happy Christina Applegate is leaving this stupid show that NOBODY watches and can move on to bigger and better things.

  • BL

Maybe they could move Go On in GWK’s place. It has potential to grow.

I thought season 1 was alright, and liked most of the creative changes season 2 brought (with the possible exception of adding the brother), and was only going to watch the retooled multi-cam to see how bad it was, but this is just ridiculous, if they’re really thinking of continuing without Applegate. Once again, I’ll watch the first episode, if it ever gets made, just to see how bad the trainwreck is, but that’s about it. Such a disappointment, as I loved the show this past fall.

  • Dan S

I gave up on this show once I heard it was going multi-cam. Christina Applegate got smart, too bad NBC can’t do likewise & cut their losses.

  • Flame

This show is a ratings train wreck, why even bother with 5 more episodes? Dunno how busy Lisa Kudrow is lately, but I guess the check would be pretty high for her to come shooting a show that will be canceled after 5…

  • PJM

I wonder if it’s too late to order additional episodes of Guys With Kids or Whitney.

    Don’t give them any ideas!

  • Fritz

Just pull the plug already. The show went down hill when they cancelled The Ava Show. Hasn’t worked since. I gave up on it early this season – NBC should do the same.

  • Dan

This is seriously the best news I’ve heard ever regarding the retooling of a series. It sounds like something made up or an April Fools Prank. I was stunned when I heard the show was switching formats but now replacing Christina Applegate is just silly. After seeing how much better the Community/Parks and Rec combo performed then the 30 Rock/Up All Night Combo it shows that no one will watch Up All Night period. NBC should just cancel the show now. If they do that then they can air Whitney’s remaining 5 episodes with Save Me in March and then after Whitney ends, NBC can move Save Me to Thursdays at 9:30.

Fun Fact: If NBC cancels Up All Night now before any episodes are shot then both Christina Applegate’s series will have lasted 2 seasons and 35 episodes.

  • omabin

This is insane. NBC cannot be serious about still moving forward with the show. Just create another multi cam family sitcom already, this is just insanity. The show is dead.

  • psychic

    Well, it’s dead now.

  • Doug

I don’t even know why NBC bothered with the reformat. Perhaps to use as a launch into the new laugh-track sitcom world they intend to pursue?

Without Applegate, the show is dead. NBC should just cancel the rest and do re-runs of Go On, which needs the extra exposure.

  • Jenny

How is she even allowed to leave? I mean, isn’t she under contract? NBC must be willing to let her go or something. WTF?

  • Oliver

I wonder if Christina Applegate did this unilaterally and hopes NBC won’t sue for breach of contract.

  • networkman

I was only going to watch the reboot because of Christina. I know that she was capable of making it work because of her experience on Married With Children. Now that she is gone, I am out. She doesn’t have faith in what they are doing, so why should the viewers? I don’t really care for Will Arnett to begin with and I don’t feel Lisa Kudrow will be the answer. The chemistry will be off. The Friends actors/actresses are having a hard time breaking away from their previous roles. Lisa will remind me too much of Phoebe.

Anyways, I really did like Christina and Maya together. It could of worked as more of a Lucy and Ethel style comedy. I would of loved to see just the two girls travel. The concept should of been two women hanging out, traveling….simply Up All Night.

NBC should increase Guys with Kids episode order now and just scrap the reboot of Up All Night.

  • Dan

@PJM – They could actually just order additional episodes of both Whitney and Guys With Kids. As of now GWK is scheduled to end on February 27 after 17 eps. NBC could give the show 5 more to air with Whitney’s remaining episosdes and give Whitney a few more eps to last until April.

However given GWK’s low ratings it seems the show may just finish up on February 27, though NBC has done stranger things.

Next thing NBC will come to it’s senses and just cancel Up All Night. Its nothing like it once was and the series is just a dead show walking.

@Smggugfaw – I doubt there will be any more episodes to DVR after this.
