“Arrow,” “The Vampire Diaries” and “Supernatural” to Return Next Season

February 11, 2013 (Burbank, California) ? The CW Network has given early pickups to three of its hit series for next season, including freshman hit ARROW, its top-rated drama THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and fan favorite SUPERNATURAL, it was announced today by Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW.  All three shows will return in Fall 2013.

“We said last year that one of our goals was to establish building blocks to grow on, and now with our new hit ARROW and fan favorite SUPERNATURAL on Wednesday night, and the continued success of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES on Thursday, we’ve been able to do that,” said Pedowitz. “Not only do ARROW, SUPERNATURAL, and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES perform well on-air, they’re also extremely successful for us both digitally and socially. I’m thrilled to have all three shows returning to our schedule next season.”

One of the true breakout hits of the season, ARROW posted The CW’s best series premiere since 2009 and currently stands as the network’s most watched show (4.3mil).  Heading into its fifth season next fall, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES remains The CW’s highest rated series in target demographics, including adults 18-34 and women 18-34.  THE VAMPIRE DIARIES also continues to be one of the network’s top performing shows digitally and socially; in fact, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES recently topped Trendrr’s list as network TV’s #1 social program for the week of January 21–27

The Winchester brothers of SUPERNATURAL will continue to fight the forces of evil for a ninth season.  Since being paired with ARROW on Wednesday this year, SUPERNATURAL has seen a dramatic uptick in its ratings from last season, rising 15% among total viewers, 10% in adults 18-34 and 18% in adults 18-49.

Nothing surprising here but congrats to all 3 shows on there early renewals

I think the CW will cancel 90210, HOD and TCD

I did liked 90210 seasons 1-3 but season 4 and 5 are terrible
and I do like TCD and although it did ok last week BATB is stronger

  • Dave S.

Great news, but not surprising. Very happy Arrow was given early renewal. I would like to see BATB picked up for a 2nd season. I have never watched 90210 but not sure why they can’t wrap it up this year. The ratings aren’t helping the CW from what I can tell.

  • CrimTV

This shows that while the other 4 nets are putting shows on huge breaks and airing shows against huge events, The CW is actually the smartest network this season!

  • Dan

Ok so while CW renewed the “no brainer” trio we still wait to hear the fates of HOD, Nikita, 90210, Beauty and the Beast, and Carrie Diaries.

  • CrimTV

    I love 90210, but I don’t think it deserves a final season, at least GG had 0.5’s and 0.6’s, 90210 has 0.3’s and 0.4’s.

  • Raykov

@CrimTV…yeah, but then all the other shows pulled 0.7s and now all pull 0.5s… I don’t see the difference :/

  • Dan

My guess is CW will renew Carrie Diaries (It may turn out to be the next Life Unexpected in terms of a midseason drama renewal) a short final season of 90210, a final fourth season of Nikita, and a third of Hart of Dixie, while cancelling Beauty and the Beast.

90210 is good for a renewal because of CW’s final season veteran theory

Nikita is good because of its latest uptick and because of Syndication. Also I doubt CW will want any new shows Fridays.

Hart of Dixie is good because I have yet to see The CW cancel a drama after 2 full seasons. They could use it.

Beauty and the Beast is likely dead only because of its bad retention out of VD. It seems like the next Secret Circle and its slot will go to The Originals for next season.

Please announce this as Supernatural’s final season. Been a fan of the show since it premiered in 2005, but things are just getting too repetitive for me…how many more times can one of the brothers go to Hell/purgatory and get in fights with each other? Good show, but it is just losing steam for me.

  • Freyja

@Dan W-Then don’t watch it anymore, but don’t be selfish to ask for it to end because you are unhappy with it.

I personally think this season is the best one yet, hated 6 and 7…

  • thesnowleopard

Yaaayyyyy Supernatural and Arrow! (I don’t watch TVD, but it was a slamdunk for renewal, so yay for it, too). The main surprise is that they renewed so early, but you’d think that after over half a season of all three of them getting practically twice the ratings of the rest of the network, the CW would have enough to make a decision by now. They just usually wait longer.

I doubt we’ll hear anything about the others before May, especially with Cult starting so late (It may tank, but never assume), but you never know.

  • Wright

Great news!!! Now cancel the 90210 and TCD. Hopefully Cult does well.I can’t wait for The Originals.

  • CharlieS

found this early renewal to be interesting

does it mean we won’t be hearing anything else about the other shows until May?

  • Michael

    Why are people surprised? O.o

I’m seeing comments like “best day ever” lol…

  • Skylar James

Carrie Diaries had 1 episode with good ratings, let’s wait and see before we start speculating on whether it will be renewed, cause before last week, it was cancelled for sure, and might easily be back there.

  • E

Great news for Arrow. Is there any word on the new Wonder Woman pilot that the CW is developing?

  • Shepherd

CW announces that water is wet! lol, I don’t think anyone expected anything different. Happy to hear the good news though, even though I only watch Arrow.

  • Mi

I’m happy for all 3 shows and I hope Arrow and SPN continue to be paired together in the next season.

@E “Is there any word on the new Wonder Woman pilot that the CW is developing?”
They are still waiting for the final (and improved) script and decided not to order it to pilot for now.

  • kiersten

So freaking thrilled about supernatural! Best news i have heard all year! <3 :D

  • Fake Me Out

I’m not surprised they didn’t announce Nikita’s renewal today … today was about early pick-ups for shows that are doing well (by CW standards) and the little chest thumping that entails. Later, much later, with tails tucked between legs they’ll announce the, WB forced with gun to the head, renewal of Nikita for a final season.

With the renewal of Supernatural and previously Bones my field of shows that I think may not return despite being rated as certain/likely to return dwindles … my best bet now would be Castle.

Congrats to the 3 CW shows cast & crew on another years pay in an industry that has like 90% unemployment.

  • Lainey

YES!!! So happy for ARROW! Congrats Greg Berlanti and Stephen Amell! Well-deserved!
