The return of Rules of Engagement last week has it starting out as a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation. There's no space for the show on next Fall's schedule unless CBS either (a) expands their comedy time (possible), or (b) premieres no new sitcoms (not realistically possible). Of course, it could be renewed for another short schedule filling season like it was this year. That's possible, but I don't think it's likely.
Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.
** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.
From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old" Fall predictions in the table.
Notes:
-
- certain to be cancelled by May, 2013 -
- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013 -
- toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013 -
- more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013 -
- certain to be renewed by May, 2013
The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).
(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@MichaelChickless,
Sorry to disappoint you and all TGW naysayers, but, your ‘wish’ list for its cancellation ‘ain’t’ going to happen.

Excellent news for all of us who love this outstanding show!!!
@Aja — I guess we’ll just see soon enough.
Mentalist has to be renewed!!!
TGW is the biggest waste of airwaves currently on broadcast television. Should never have been put at 9, all it did was drag down the 10pm show. As if it’s compatible with any audience from football overruns either.
Survivor is getting old and tired. If Sundays looked like 60 Minutes/TAR/Survivor/Mentalist I would think that could be a solid lineup.
Criminal Minds losing Wed@9 also wouldn’t surprise me, though if it and CSI stay they will probably continue to be a solid block. The real question is does Elementary get to stay on CBS’ best night after seeing no boost at all from the Superbowl?
These half seasons of “Rules” are kind of like when Sheldon created that robot to live his life for him on “The Big Bang Theory.” It may be expanding the life span, but it’s just not the same. All shows die, but only some shows truly live.
I think Elementary is moving to Sunday 9pm replacing The Good Wife next season. I wouldn’t bet on it if Elementary had shown sign of healthy ratings on Thursday. But so far, it’s still disappointing, even after the Super Bowl. Furthermore, CBS has just secured Lost actor Josh Holloway on a pilot called Intelligence. That show sounds good and Mr. Holloway seems to have a large following so it looks like a sure pick-up to me. It would be a nice companion to Person of Interest (or Criminal Minds but since CSI is strong, there’s no need to move it).
David Spades character killed this show….way to unlikable,and yes Michael,Family Guy drew out Joe’s wife’s pregnancy for 9 years.
I hope TBBT gets at least 10 seasons, I love TBBT and Castle the most so I NEED Castle to be renewed
As far as I’m concerned, CSI:NY should’ve ended last season, especially after MK left. Although I’ve cooled now but to me, as much as I like Sela Ward, MK’s abrupt leaving killed the show for me and it should retire into the history books. I’m not optimistic about Golden Boy though so…
The Good Wife and Mentalist still have a little life left in them but even critical acclaim will carry TGW for one more season. If the ratings go lower though, I see 2014 as the show’s swan song.
CBS wil probably renew ROE just because they haven’t exactly had success launching new sitcoms recently (other than 2BG). I see a similar strategy by CBS next year, to try out a new sitcom, and have ROE as a backup if it fails.
@Aja
The contract does not mean it will be renewed..
The creators of the show are not responsible for renewals but are for contracts. They have to make sure the cast is set.
But that does not mean that the renewal people are going to green light a new season.
@The End
I could see TAR being at 9 pm (since its original timeslot was Tue@9), but I agree that TAR at 8 pm and Survivor at 9 pm would probably be better, if only to limit the number of schedule changes that need to be promoted.

It looks like the new Mentalist at 9pm on March 3 is a not going to happen. It’s maybe just an error in the press release. Now it says 10pm, though it said “at a special time, 9:00-10:00 PM” before. But it’s quite hard to have an error that long!
@Dinaminjo,
I’ll take my odds that TGW will be renewed. You have, perhaps, a few weeks to live in smug denial…savor the moments
@The Steve Sanders,
Thanks. Do you know if any character not played by Patrick Warburton has had to wait more than 2 seasons for a baby?
