The return of Rules of Engagement last week has it starting out as a "toss up" for renewal or cancellation. There's no space for the show on next Fall's schedule unless CBS either (a) expands their comedy time (possible), or (b) premieres no new sitcoms (not realistically possible). Of course, it could be renewed for another short schedule filling season like it was this year. That's possible, but I don't think it's likely.
Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.
** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.
From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old" Fall predictions in the table.
Notes:
-
- certain to be cancelled by May, 2013 -
- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013 -
- toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013 -
- more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013 -
- certain to be renewed by May, 2013
The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).
(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I really don’t get the argument that 3 NCISes would be to much for one night: is NCIS Red really going to be that much different of a show than any other crime drama CBS could put there?
POI is doing really well Thursday @ 9, so for me that’s why the comedy expansion goes to Wednesday @8.
Good Wife is renewed for a final 10 episode season to get the total episode count to 100. CSI:NY gets renewed instead of The Mentalist because of CSI:NY’s syndication revenue.
Elementary and HF0 moved to Sunday because Monday @ 10 and Thursday @ 10 are better slots to launch new shows than Sunday is.

To make a sports analogy if roe was a ball player, it would be a long relief pitcher and as such has filled a vital role at CBS for years. Not everyone is a starter….
@ scraps
I don’t think CBS will move two Shows to Sunday. Maybe The Good Wife moves to 10 with Elementary at 9 (Hawaii Five-0 should stay on Monday at 10).

Rules of Engagement, always the brides maid. I think if they wrap it up with a short final season I’d be fine with that.
@Dakota
Pretty good schedule.
I don’t know if comedy would do well on Wednesday. CBS would have to compete against ABC and maybe NBC comedies. That would split viewers and affect 2.5 men and the new show’s ratings. Also I would swap Mike and Molly for Mom so that Mom can get the 2BG lead in. If we consider the Partners failure of this year at 8:30, it would be safer to put a returning show there. I don’t know if a 2 hour reality block on Sundays would do well. They would be competing against The Apprentice and I don’t know if ratings would stay strong from beginning to end.
The thing that bothered me with rules was spade’s character, never bought into the idea of him being a ladies man,and they made his character way to annoying, anywhere but t.v. and he would get the hell beat out of him on a daily bases.
Getting a 2.9 in the 18-49 demo should be worth a renewal to CBS for a show that has been on so long and has loyal viewers after being in so many timeslots.
This is a Friday show with Mike and Molly! Heck this show can even go. It has it’s moments, but at the same time, it really the same every week! Too many sex jokes and cat jokes and really we can all live without it!
Good Lord, all my favorite shows are being cancelled, first “Scrubs,” then “30 Rock,” now maybe “Rule of Engagement.” I guess I can give up cable TV and watch what I want. So long, network execs. You have proved what idiots you are!!! Hope you can find other jobs when you get tossed out the door!
