All season I've been writing that the only way 90210 gets renewed is for a nostalgic short final season. Now, I think its recent ratings slide has likely made that nostalgia too painful for the CW.

90210 relative ratings are much lower than other recent "nostalgia" final season shows. 90210 2013 ratings (not including last night) are currently at just 58% of the CW scripted show average. Compare that to Gossip Girl last spring (83%), and One Tree Hill the spring before (89%). Nostalgia's easier if you're not having to renew a complete ratings albatross, and gets even more painful if you have to cancel a show doing OK to get nostalgic. Nostalgia still could overwhelm ad revenue, but now I'm guessing it's not likely.

Did I jump the gun when I moved Beauty & The Beast to "likely renewed" last week after just 2 weeks of 0.7 ratings? The last episode's 0.6 rating suggests I may have. Stay tuned.

This is looking like an interesting spring for the Cancellation Bear and the CW. Once Cult premieres, the CW will likely cancel two of Beauty & The Beast, Cult, Hart Of Dixie, and The Carrie Diaries (in addition to 90210)  to make room for next season. Considering the level of crazy in some of those fan groups, the bear expects fireworks!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Revenger, I think you’re right cause they’re filming the last two episodes of season five and still no official announcement from CW that this the last season. With his respect for veterans shows & final seasons, I don’t think he’d wait til May til the finale airs then announce “this is the end for 90210″, but I could be wrong. But at least 90210 will have a proper ending either way.
I’m not so sure right about another teen soap coming along soon though as Pedowitz is going for genre shows/scifi/fantasay/supernatrual shows next season.Though Reign is a pilot and it’s a period teen soap.Who knows if it’ll get picked up to series.

  • Charmed

If Mark is planning on turning it into a SyFy wannabe, he might as well announce the network is going bankrupt with the budget these shows demand.

  • Tom

    @ Charmed Re: “B&TB didn’t adjust up!”

That can only mean the number of chicks with no social life has declined again.

  • Angelsgal

This is why the CW should of renewed either Ringer or he Secret Circle for a 13 ep ,I’d season run. In case a new show tanked or what happened to 90210. There line up could of looked like late jan early feb

    Mon
    8pm – TCD
9pm – Hart of Dixie (new night)

    Tues
    8pm – Cult
    9pm – Supernatural

    Wed
    8pm – Arrow
    9pm – Ringer

    Thurs
    8pm – TVD
    9pm – B&tB

    Fri
    8pm – Nikita
    9pm – 90210 (new night)

Alternatively they could of left arrow/supernatural combo Wednesday and had cult/the secret circle Tuesday. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and no one could of predicted 90210 dropping over 50% season to season

  • animal

why not just cancel the CW? lol time to restart the network its just not working

  • Shaz

@Tom Re: “That can only mean the number of chicks with no social life has declined again.”

Or the chicks have an active social life and were out on Valentine’s Day! :P

  • mia

BATB is so gone now, Its ratings are going down, unless it goes up in the next few weeks.

90210 has to go period, there’s no reason to keep it at all, its ratings so terrible, there’s no point in bringing it back even for 13 episodes.

  • Depressed

Soo depress that they canceled Emily Owens just when it got interesting
I wish another network would pick it up

  • oldfan

    SHOULD BE RENEWED
    * Emily Owens, M.D. – I know they stupidly canceled this but it was a good fun show
    * Hart Of Dixie – great cast humor, deals with issues but quiet way. watch every week
    * Vampire Diaries

Beauty And The Beast – getting better each episode
    Arrow – up/down – need improvement
Nikita – needs adjustment sorry to say much better last season- loved it now like it

CANCEL NOW – all three horrible
    90210
    Gossip Girl
    The Carrie Diaries

    DON’T CARE
Supernatural – watched in beginning and lost it in 2nd season

  • davie

Canceled- TCD(already at .5s), 90210(shortened final season pointless), BATB(if not sent to friday)
Renewed- Nikita(88 episode mark), HOD(CWs most steady bubble show), Cult(just my prediction)

  • Brandy

I don’t think BaTB is doing well enough to be renewed-0.5 again behind the best leadin possible , what would it do if moved away from VD and put on Fri? 0.2-0.3 I’d guess. Were not even to the DST spring ratings drop yet either.Im a fan of the show but the ratings aren’t good behind the best leadin.

  • Tom

@ Win You nailed it when describing the Cult premiere. I saw the opener and and didn’t take away enough to draw many conclusions about it. It’ll require watching more episodes to get a real sense of whether this show has a future.

  • halloween

if TVD keeps dropping maybe they cancel the spinoff

  • Brandy

    @Halloween, not a chance.VD had a down/bad week but it’ll bounce back to remain CWs #1 show.

  • Guest

If 90210 was still good I would be sad, at this point I don’t care anymore.

  • Brandy

I like a couple CW genre shows-VD,BaTB,SC-but also like a lot of thier other shows:GG,90210(but they were better in earlier seasons),HoD,Emily Owens MD,Carrie Diaries,Life is Wild,Life Unexpected,Beayutful Life,Melrose Place 2009, too.My point is I think CW should have variety, diversity and not go only genre shows.I only like a few genre shows & movies:I like Once Upon a Time,The Gates,Twilight,Beautiful Creatures,Charmed.

  • Gus

This version of 90210 never caught on the way its’ Fox network predecessor did. The fact of the matter is 90210 has gone on a lot longer than it should have perhaps. A short final season wouldn’t hurt but if push comes to shove they should dump 90210 along with Nikita and move on

  • Ralphie

I think 90210 should have a final season. It’s only fair to the fans to be honest. I am not a fan of the show but to think that my fav show Vampire D not getting a final season just because it’s rating flopped the reason before isn’t right. Gossip Girl got a final season so why not 90210?

  • Brandy

@Ralphie, VD will get a final season when the time comes. Its ratings dipped reccently yes, but for CW they are still good, a hit, one of only two(sometimes three) shows on CW to hit 1.0+.Itll bounce back. Its ratings aren’t bad enough yet to be having season five as the last season-it was renewed for next season btw for season five.VD is still CWs highest rated show in demo(and does great social media wise too), it just had a down week is all.VDs ratings didn’t flop last season, yes they might’ve dropped then as they did this season but it’s ratings last season weren’t flopping.

  • Alan

I think that Cult will be cancelled in order to give 90210 a final season. They will want to release another midseason show, so it’s perfect to have a short season of a show to have a free spot by January. TSC was sacrified last year because of Gossip Girl, and Cult is already dead because of the crappy timeslot. So I think…

    Renewed:
Hart of Dixie, 90210, Nikita (moving to summer), The Carrie Diaries

    Cancelled:
Beauty and the Beast and Cult.

    My timeslot:
    MONDAYS
    8:00 – The Carrie Diaries
    9:00 – 90210 (final season)/New teen show

    TUESDAYS:
    8:00 – Hart of Dixie
    9:00 – New Show

    WEDNESDAYS:
    8:00 – Arrow
9:00 – New show or Supernatural, I don’t know. Arrow is the second most watched show of The CW and now that Supernatural is stronger than last year it could work as a lead in.

    THURSDAYS:
    8:00 – The Vampire Diaries
    9:00 – The Originals

    FRIDAYS:
8:00 – Supernatural or a new show. Same reason as the one I said earlier.
    9:00 – Nikita
