Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 10, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
90210   0.58
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.66
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.84
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.84
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 0.97
Supernatural renewed 1.35
Arrow renewed 1.49
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.86

All season I've been writing that the only way 90210 gets renewed is for a nostalgic short final season. Now, I think its recent ratings slide has likely made that nostalgia too painful for the CW.

90210 relative ratings are much lower than other recent "nostalgia" final season shows. 90210 2013 ratings (not including last night) are currently at just 58% of the CW scripted show average. Compare that to Gossip Girl last spring (83%), and One Tree Hill the spring before (89%). Nostalgia's easier if you're not having to renew a complete ratings albatross, and gets even more painful if you have to cancel a show doing OK to get nostalgic. Nostalgia still could overwhelm ad revenue, but now I'm guessing it's not likely.

Did I jump the gun when I moved Beauty & The Beast to "likely renewed" last week after just 2 weeks of 0.7 ratings? The last episode's 0.6 rating suggests I may have. Stay tuned.

This is looking like an interesting spring for the cancellation bear and the CW. Once Cult premieres, the CW will likely cancel two of Beauty & The Beast, Cult, Hart of Dixie, and The Carrie Diaries (in addition to 90210)  to make room for next season. Considering the level of crazy in some of those fan groups, the bear expects fireworks!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@ Alan, SC wasn’t sacrificed to give GG a final season. It was cancelled because it’s ratings/retention out of VD weren’t good,it apparently didn’t do well overseas or online and Pedowitz felt it wouldn’t grow and get worse ratings if renewed and moved to Fri just to be cancelled in season two. Also,SpN will not go back to fri and Nikita will not move back to 9pm after its ratings fell when they tried it there.

  • Justin

I agree with @Brandy above that The CW should not be one genre focused. I’ve watched different types of shows on the network that are both the teen types like GG and the sci-fi types likes SPN. It gives more variety to viewers and more choices beyond watching the same thing every night. Besides, even though the teen drama night (Mondays) is lower lately, the network wouldn’t try to give up those types of shows. There is still an audience and advertisers geared towards them and if they were to give them up, the audience might defer to another network like ABC Family or MTV.

@Alan The CW wouldn’t put SPN back on Fridays. It’s now the 3rd best show on the network after switching it to Wednesdays and it seems to be working ratings wise. Also, Nikita won’t be moving to the summer – it still has an audience in the fall. Possibly 90210 or TCD could be summer shows because teen shows tend to do well during summers.

  • Tom

@ Alan I think you’re jumping the gun on Cult. The show hasn’t even aired yet. I’ve seen the first episode, but it was pretty superficial. So, I didn’t come away with much of an idea of where the show is headed. It will probably require watching a few more episodes to decide if Cult is a keeper. That assumes my patience holds up.

  • Melanie

@Alan No way Supernatural goes back to Fridays next season. I seriously doubt that the Wednesday night pairing of Arrow & Supernatural will be changed. Its working for the CW. If they move those two, they have to advertise the move and they need all their promo dollars for promoting new shows.

I seriously doubt that the CW has the money to launch five new shows, but they currently have five of eight timeslots M-TH that are under a .8, in some cases (90210) significantly under, and I think if they could afford to dump them all and try something new, they would. — I use .8 because Supernatural was getting that on Fridays and it was good enough to pull it off of Fridays and plug it back in during the week —

But chances are, they can’t afford to launch five — and with only eight pilots to choose from, hoping that better than half of them pan out is probably wishful thinking.
I think that at the very least there will be three, one new one — probably the Originals behind TVD on Thursdays and two others that will be on Monday or Tuesday.
It will depend on which pilots come back strongest as to how they get placed; if its two genre pilots, I think they’ll put them together and promote a whole new night — say the 100 and the Selection or the Tomorrow People — and try to get another night over a 1.0. If its a genre and say Company Town then one each goes on Monday & Tuesday paired with whichever of the bubble shows doesn’t get cancelled and makes the most sense thematically for the night.
So to me, the only question about the CW’s fall schedule is about Monday & Tuesday nights– is it going to be:

    1)(Doubtful, cost prohibitive)
    8:00 New Show
    9:00 New Show

    8:00 New Show
    9:00 New Show

or 2)(I think Tuesday is the more likely night for new shows since they’ve been trying to launch a hit there, but it could be either night)
    8:00 Bubble Show
    9:00 Bubble Show

    8:00 New Show
    9:00 New Show

or 3)(I think the new shows will be the anchors, the CW has to be hoping for the pilots to be self-starters like Arrow, and Lord knows, none of the Bubble shows are strong enough for themselves, let alone to anchor another show)
    8:00 New Show
    9:00 Bubble Show

    8:00 New Show
    9:00 Bubble Show

Followed by the rest of the week:
    8:00 Arrow
    9:00 Supernatural

    8:00 Vampire Diaries
9:00 The Originals (If this pilot doesn’t go forward, there will still be a new show here)

8:00 Scheduled repeat or possibly a Bubble Show
    9:00 Nikita

  • Melanie

    Sorry I meant:
    8:00 Nikita
9:00 Scheduled repeat or possibly a Bubble Show

  • Charmed

90210 could be moved to 9pm on Tuesday or Friday, it would save new shows or successful shows dying there.

  • Bonnie

90210 really has to go. It’s ratings are terrible! Even worse than GG’s in it’s final season. The CW would be out of their minds if they renew this show over HOD, BATB and TCD. The network should just announce this as the final season and focus on their new projects.

  • Natalie

BATB will definitely get renewed. They won the People’s Choice for Best New TV show this year and with the new casting choices coming in I think the ratings will improve.

  • tommie

Well, I watched the Cult pilot and enjoyed it. However, the pessimist in me thinks it’ll be cancelled – it’s been put together with a completely uncompatible show in a death slot.

I think Hart of Dixie is certain to be renewed to be honest. I think they’ll pair it with either The Carrie Diaries or 90210 – whichever of those gets renewed. I don’t see another season for Beauty and the Beast to be honest, unless it starts picking up some steam.

Nikita, of course, will get a final season.

Also, a player that a lot of people seem to forget is America’s Next Top Model – the CW could easily decide that it’s good enough to be put back on the regular season if it performs well this summer and could very well come into play mid-season.

  • Win

It’s funny so many people are writing Cult off, as dead in the water, before it airs. I’m willing to say if cult can garner a steady CULT(couldn’t help myself) following it’ll be relegated to Friday’s following Nikita and replacing 90210 come mid-season.
Again that’s if, it does well, which I’m at least CONSIDERING.

  • Dakota

    @ Win

    We’ll see come Wednesday.

  • NE1

I can’t believe Nikita has hung on so well. I watched a little bit of it last year when I was waiting for Supernatural to start, not terrible but never got into it. Might watch if it goes into syndication.

  • Win

We should actually wait until next week @Dakota. The pilot has been available online for a while. Some may not tune in. Either way. I’m not saying Cult will be a success, I’m just not going to say it’s a failure already.

  • Dawn

They should cancel Nikita. What a horrible show!! Why would they keep it over TCD or BATB??

  • Angellic .T.

as we all know the vampire diaries, supernatural, and arrow has been renewed for sure and i’m fine with that i do not care if B&TB gets renewed if they renew the secret circle honestly not trying to be mean i watched B&TB and didn’t like it. It wasn’t my kinda thing but i do love the secret circle and believe it should get renewed with those shows so just please renew it mark

  • Jasmine

I’m sorry but the cw has really bad shows right now. I thought I would like the Carrie diaries but it seems pointless because its a prequel and you already know what carries future is. Also it’s not accurate with the sex and the city storyline when Carrie references her past. Her trying to make it all on her own in the city and seeing the other younger versions of her friends would have been so much better. My friend keeps telling me to watch the vampire diaries but its just too cheesy, Hart of Dixie just isn’t interesting, cult is horrible. Arrow is really the cw’s only show that has any potential but honestly it’s just a really boring network. To be fair most tv hasn’t been any good lately and I really don’t think any of the other networks shows are nearly as good as they used to be but the cw is going to need way better shows to keep up.
