All season I've been writing that the only way 90210 gets renewed is for a nostalgic short final season. Now, I think its recent ratings slide has likely made that nostalgia too painful for the CW.

90210 relative ratings are much lower than other recent "nostalgia" final season shows. 90210 2013 ratings (not including last night) are currently at just 58% of the CW scripted show average. Compare that to Gossip Girl last spring (83%), and One Tree Hill the spring before (89%). Nostalgia's easier if you're not having to renew a complete ratings albatross, and gets even more painful if you have to cancel a show doing OK to get nostalgic. Nostalgia still could overwhelm ad revenue, but now I'm guessing it's not likely.

Did I jump the gun when I moved Beauty & The Beast to "likely renewed" last week after just 2 weeks of 0.7 ratings? The last episode's 0.6 rating suggests I may have. Stay tuned.

This is looking like an interesting spring for the Cancellation Bear and the CW. Once Cult premieres, the CW will likely cancel two of Beauty & The Beast, Cult, Hart Of Dixie, and The Carrie Diaries (in addition to 90210)  to make room for next season. Considering the level of crazy in some of those fan groups, the bear expects fireworks!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

If Nikita gets 0.5 on Friday with no lead in and BATB gets it with VD as a lead in then BATB is on its way out.

@Bob – I would think very unlikely The CW would announce cancellation now for 90210. They’ve unofficially made shows their final seasons with 7th Heaven and Gilmore Girls way back in 2007 but I really don’t think they wouldnt wrap up 90210 with a final season. It was a flagship series for them along with Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries and Arrow.

  • Dillan

    @Jamie:

The only thing making me think this is the final season of 90210 is the fact that they killed off Riley to get Lannie back together, but there’s no signs that they’re actually getting back together.

And surely if this was the final season of 90210, The CW wouldn’t be keeping it a secret and will actually be promoting it as the final season to boost ratings? Until something is actually announced, I don’t think this is the final season of 90210.

As a fan of the show, I do hope it does get a proper ending.

  • Richard Steven Hack

I say BATB will not survive UNLESS they focus the show on the conspiracy and thus manage to hang on to their .6-.7. AND in addition some of the other shows tank, especially HoD which has a much better chance of being renewed than BATB with similar ratings in a second season. The show simply is not compelling without a major focus on the conspiracy. The number of women fans who like the love story is NOT going to be enough to sustain the ratings.

Cult is going to “die very badly” – its premise is more confused than The Following – plus it will read like a copy of The Following regardless of which one was actually created first. If it DOES premiere well and remains above .6 by end of its first season, it will probably cause either BATB or HoD to be canceled, however. In that case, I doubt it will do better than either of those shows by end of its first season.

Carrie Diaries is the “old CW” and it’s doing horribly in the ratings. It will be canceled.

90210 is doomed. There will be no final season because there’s absolutely no point except a Pedowitz preference and that preference cannot override the need to dump at least three shows this season. Why cancel HoD or BATB that are doing .6 instead of 90210? Makes no sense.

So Cult, Carrie Diaries and 90210 are doomed. Hod and BATB have a shot, but a poor one if Cult does well.

BATB at least will die in season two and never reach syndication. A third season for HoD might reach syndication a la Nikita which gives it the edge over BATB which will never reach a third season.

If I was the CW I’d cancel all of that stuff except the top three shows (already renewed) and Nikita (and maybe HoD since it’s not strictly a “teen stroke show” like 90210 and it has possible syndication potential unlike BATB) and take the risk on new shows, especially genre shows. How much worse can the network do than it already is?

They brought in TCD this season and it was a disaster. They brought in Arrow and it did well. They brought in BATB and it didn’t do so well but might still have some potential to survive. So that’s two genre shows that did not do too badly and one “old CW stroke show” that died. That should tell the network where to shift its focus – to genre shows.

I’m sure we’ve seen that bear pic before – but it was one of the better ones anyway.

    Renewed:
    1. Nikita (syndication, doing good for a Friday show)

    50/50 Chance
    2. TCD
    3. HOD

    Cancelled:
    4. 90210 (maybe a short final season?)
    5. BATB (Bye!)

If Cult surprise us in the ratings TCD or HOD is going to be cancelled.

  • CoolRanchDoritos

i do feel bad about 90210 (i wanna see it make it to S6) but on the bright side theres 4 smilies next to Nikita!!!

    Don’t cancel HoD.

i do not want another season of TVD.

    YAY for Arrow & SPN!!!

    Don’t watch Carrie or BatB.

  • JulieDawn

    @Tom

Good points, well thought out and nicely written without any unnecessary jabs at the BATB fanbase or the actors.

I do still disagree with some of your comments, for instance I don’t think at this point there’s much danger of losing that core audience, but I actually enjoyed reading your post today.

The CW Needs to add back Sundays! (I WISH)

I don’t have a clue what The CW will do or what they are really thinking, but my hope is they renew Beauty & the Beast and Nikita.

  • Jt

    Alan
With how low ratings are i doubt its been renewed yet but i do agree it will geta final season 6-8 epsiodes and maybe a late summer run.

  • JacTv

I will begin to trust in the tv happy fairy if TCD and 90210 survive if they keep the last ratings for the last few episodes.

0.3 and 0.5 is almost always cancellation on any network.

And 90210 lost half of CW´s viewers after TcD.

    So goodnight 90210 and TcD

  • 90210 fan

No, They cannot cancel 90210.. this is totally outrageous 90210 is my favorite show and its amazing…! Dont end 90210 :c

  • dottydorothy

Last night’s ratings for both TCD and 90210 put them firmly in the cancelled zone! And really, its not as if such a whole lot of people who are caring to watch 90210 now, that so many will be disappointed that there isnt a final season! I loved the show in S1 but since then its been such a horrid road downhill! Cancel it, wrap up everything in 1 final episode (and lord knows it can all be done up in 5 mins flat! everyone says sorry, has a sudden realisation they love the other person and wanna be with them and wham! its done! Liam-Annie, Dixon-Adriana, Naveed-Silver + Silver gets her baby and Max-Naomi)

  • v

90210 is dead. The show was previous management’s show.

CW is moving away from soaps. There pilot’s are almost all genre shows.
CW needs the room. Hart will be renewed, like NIkita to get to syndication.

  • Carmen

90210 should have ended 3 season ago. Poor show just got writers that didn’t know what they were doing. Changing writeres didn’t help either. So long 90210 I’ll probably watch the last episode maybe.

  • Craig

Would be so happy if 90210 gets cancelled. Three years or so too late, but whatever. Go away…

Hope Hart of Dixie gets renewed.

  • chris23

With 3 shows being Renewed on the CW, I believe 3-4 more will be picked up for next years schedule. I Think CW should grow some balls and premiere 4 shows, however CW is in the mindframe of taking it one step at a time. CW had one hit out of 4 new shows so far, VD is stable still, and Supernatural grew bigger than expected which are all great stories for the CW this season. CW will try to get another good hit in next season but if they could get 2 stable shows then the net can really start getting rid of the underperforming shows.

Hart of Dixie and Nikita are renewed.

Out of Beauty and the Beast, 90210, Carrie, and Cult who knows that will make it to the schedule next season. Each show has an obvious reason on why it should NOT be on the schedule.

BATB scores slightly better ratings but this is with a higher leadin which these other shows do not benefit from. How Would beauty do if it was behind an underperforming show or a self starter?

90210.. Just pathetic. a 0.3 and below 700,00 viewers? Need I say more.. And please all you west coast fans do not blame Carrie this show was pathetic when gossip girl was still on? Do we all not remember the 100th episode in which 90210 failed to break 1 million viewers!

Carrie: Its #s do not stand out or scream renewal for a new show it isn’t performing above average for the net.

CULT: It has yet to premiere but hearing negative things already. I on the other hand will check out the premiere to make my own judgement. If this show was a solid perfomer it would help CW put things into prospective.
