All season I've been writing that the only way 90210 gets renewed is for a nostalgic short final season. Now, I think its recent ratings slide has likely made that nostalgia too painful for the CW.

90210 relative ratings are much lower than other recent "nostalgia" final season shows. 90210 2013 ratings (not including last night) are currently at just 58% of the CW scripted show average. Compare that to Gossip Girl last spring (83%), and One Tree Hill the spring before (89%). Nostalgia's easier if you're not having to renew a complete ratings albatross, and gets even more painful if you have to cancel a show doing OK to get nostalgic. Nostalgia still could overwhelm ad revenue, but now I'm guessing it's not likely.

Did I jump the gun when I moved Beauty & The Beast to "likely renewed" last week after just 2 weeks of 0.7 ratings? The last episode's 0.6 rating suggests I may have. Stay tuned.

This is looking like an interesting spring for the Cancellation Bear and the CW. Once Cult premieres, the CW will likely cancel two of Beauty & The Beast, Cult, Hart Of Dixie, and The Carrie Diaries (in addition to 90210)  to make room for next season. Considering the level of crazy in some of those fan groups, the bear expects fireworks!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Reaper lasted 2 seasons on the CW…so Cult might have a slim chance of a season 2

  • Dave

Why was Repeat cancelled? Was it low ratings, or was it the victim of Dawn Ostroffs teen drama regime?’

  • Dave

    *Reaper?

  • JSZ

    Cmon Hart of Dixie!!

  • JDom

Might be worth noting that of the four up for cancellation, BATB is one of the more costly to produce what with the stunts and special effects. That wont be in it’s favor, which personally I am happy about as I would rather that be one of the ones to go, but we’ll see.

  • Nick

What the CW should do for 2013-2014:

    Mon-
    8: The Selection (new)
    9: Hart of Dixie

    Tue-
    8: The Hundred (new)
    9: Supernatural

    Wed-
    8: Arrow
9: America’s Next Top Model/ Company Town (new)

    Thu-
    8: The Vampire Diaries
    9: The Originals (new)

    Fri-
    8: Nikita (full final season)
    9: Beauty and the Beast

  • Amanda

@JDom Actually BATB is cheaper to produce than TCD due to how it’s more of a Canadian based produced series, meaning less money out of CW’s pocket at the end of the day.

Another point, the CW hasn’t nearly promoted BATB like they did with TCD, which hasn’t been doing the number I personally expected it to do with the amount of promotes it gotten and I’m sure CW is thinking the same thing.

It’s only on it’s 4th episode I believe and it already has done a 0.5 twice. The only saving grace for the series is if it does well online and oversea, something that BATB is doing well at, at the moment.

The last point, if you actually watched BATB, you would know there’s hardy any special effects in the episodes and most of the stunts are done by the actors themselves if there’s any in the actual episodes, remember Kristin Kreuk has a purple belt in martial arts!

@Win Yes, the cast of 90210 is contracted for a sixth season.
    ——-
So many people have so many points…When I saw the no adjustment or a 0.3 I thought it would be cancelled too but then I read this article

The CW is such a low rated network as it is that they can’t afford to just look at the ratings like someone else said. They have syndication deals, iTunes revenue, NetFlix revenue and all that good stuff to look at…

Also, the finale has been written already. Not to say that they wouldn’t end it on a cliffhanger but it is a “flagship” series for the CW (like someone else said) and it brought in the some of the networks best ratings for four seasons. I believe the network has strong feelings for this show because they would’ve announced it cancelled by now as it hasn’t risen over the whole season.
Since they haven’t announced this as the final season to get a possible ratings boost from “final season buzz”, like someone else said, The CW probably has renewal in mind.

So yes, just looking at the ratings – I would’ve cancelled it in the beginning of the season. Digging deeper into what’s going on with the show, especially with the whole finale already being written and CW’s preference for final seasons, the signs point towards renewal. Haters and nonbiasts’s(? lol) can say what they want but these are valid points.
I can definitely see the show returning taking this all into account.

    @Win
Um…no. Actors in Hollywood don’t get paid for episodes they never actually film unless they are a whole lot more in demand, and have much better agents, than anybody on the CW. Standard six-season contracts for new shows are always conditional on the shows getting renewed. Once a show is canceled, that’s it. Time for the actor to go look for a new job.

I’m pretty sure “They have to renew my show because the actors still have time on their contracts!” is already on the Fan Excuse Bingo Card.

  • thesnowleopard

    @freya
Sure! And while we’re at it, let’s bring back Gunsmoke. They can set it in the graveyard since most of the cast is dead, but hey, it did used to get a 40 in the demo.

    @JJA
What makes you think they aren’t?

  • Tom

Crikey! Will you guys once and for all stop posting proposed schedules with B&B on Fridays at 9 PM! That’s opposite Grimm which still hasn’t hit its peak and has twice the demo. Moreover, the only viewers you’d get at that time are the usual members of the lonely hearts club. Wasting a show in that timeslot is what Nikita’s for. Also, stop trying to break up Arrow and SPN. They work well opposite each other, so quit trying to fix what isn’t broken. If you’re going to waste your time making up these schedules at least try to use some common sense.

  • Brian I

Cancel 90210 & Cult . Why would 90210 get a final season? It’s not like it deserves it with the ratings it’s getting.

  • Mirelle

COME ON HART OF DIXIE!!! Season 2 has been nearly perfect.

I could care less about 90210. This show has gotten even lower and more pathetic…., and that is saying something considering the series wasn’t even that good to start with. The only reason I’m still watching[on-line-doesn’t come on in Canada] is because now that I know these characters, I want to know how/where they end up. As torturous as it is, it is like a car wreck; can’t turn away(as the saying goes).

  • freya

@Charmed maybe for now but the fans or Roswell are still alive and kicking they had saved the show before. Who knows.

  • Bad Wolf

People don’t seem to realize that, to keep 90210 alive, The CW will have have to cancel something that’s doing better. I think it weighs heavily against a ‘final season’ renewal.
Other networks and other times I know, but NBC and CBS never had such consideration when they cancelled Profiler and Ghost Whisperer after their finales were written, shot and almost aired. And they’re just two instances out of many, many shows.

The real nostalgia here is seeing the youngest CW watchers praying for their beloved shows. It reminds me of myself between 1999 and 2006, when Buffy went from The WB to UPN, when Angel was suddenly canceled, when Charmed gloriously survived its 4th season after Shannen Doherty’s departure, when Roswell was canceled in 2000, then renewed, then canceled again in 2001, then renewed by UPN, then canceled for the third and final time in 2002, when FOX announced the end of two of their flagship shows : the original Beverly Hills 90210 and The X-Files, when Charmed also survived its dangerously low-rated 7th season and ended in its own terms the following year. May 2006 was the end of my golden age for tv shows, with the end of Charmed and Alias, two of my all-time favorite shows, and with the end of The WB altogether. I gave up on the CW after its first year when they cancelled Veronica Mars. I still like to watch a lot of shows but I’m no longer invested as much as I was at this time.
I think 90210 should have never seen the light of day, but there’s something moving in seeing some of its fans using any weapon they can to make their point for a renewal. I’ve been down that road before, when Veronica Mars got cancelled. Sigh…

  • Jarrod

I think Pedowitz will probably do a TV movie OR order an additional 2 episodes to season 5 to allow the writers to wrap it up. I love the show, but I think it’s really unfair to other shows that could have the chance to get bigger and better to be canceled over a show that doesn’t deserve it regardless of it’s timeslot or not. It’s had 5 years to grow or remain steady and it hasn’t, so sink or swim thoroughly applies here.
As for this year, I think Pedowitz will be cut throat about cancelations and renewals. He’s made it plain and simple about renewing and canceling this year and I think given with what he is trying to do with the network, he will have no time saying “cancel, cancel and canceled” to shows regardless of how well they appear to be doing. It won’t shock me if everything else this year gets canceled (aside from Nikita due to syndication), because he’ll want a clean house and new face for the network.

  • Jarrod

I personally thought shifting BATB to Fridays at 9:00 and putting Cult after TVD on a Thursday at 9:00 would have been smart. It would give Cult a chance, seeing as BATB had it’s chance to grab an audience. IF it could maintain the audience in that time slot that it would deserve a renewal. Because let’s face it; if they renew it, they’ll shift it anyway. Give it a chance on another day to see how it keeps up, otherwise, cancel it.

  • melody

We hope that the beauty and the beast is canceled, the show with mediocre actors who can not act. The CW production should choose at least American actors are very good. CW has negative test results!

  • Angellica .T.

please renew the secret circle it has alot of potential and a huge fanbase
