Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 10, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
90210   0.58
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.66
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.84
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.84
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 0.97
Supernatural renewed 1.35
Arrow renewed 1.49
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.86

All season I've been writing that the only way 90210 gets renewed is for a nostalgic short final season. Now, I think its recent ratings slide has likely made that nostalgia too painful for the CW.

90210 relative ratings are much lower than other recent "nostalgia" final season shows. 90210 2013 ratings (not including last night) are currently at just 58% of the CW scripted show average. Compare that to Gossip Girl last spring (83%), and One Tree Hill the spring before (89%). Nostalgia's easier if you're not having to renew a complete ratings albatross, and gets even more painful if you have to cancel a show doing OK to get nostalgic. Nostalgia still could overwhelm ad revenue, but now I'm guessing it's not likely.

Did I jump the gun when I moved Beauty & The Beast to "likely renewed" last week after just 2 weeks of 0.7 ratings? The last episode's 0.6 rating suggests I may have. Stay tuned.

This is looking like an interesting spring for the cancellation bear and the CW. Once Cult premieres, the CW will likely cancel two of Beauty & The Beast, Cult, Hart of Dixie, and The Carrie Diaries (in addition to 90210)  to make room for next season. Considering the level of crazy in some of those fan groups, the bear expects fireworks!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Everyone saying a lot of shows will be cancelled, remember, the type of shows he wants cost a lot and they won’t be able to afford 5 new sci-fi’s on top of the ones there already are.

  • Charmed

@Angelina, Secret Circle was a great show but it is never coming back.

  • Charmed

I still think TCD will be renewed.

  • Win

    @thesnowleopard and @Nick

Thanks. Wasn’t sure how it worked, wasn’t playing fan excuse bingo. I’d read before by some stan that it was a contributing factor for GG’S FINAL SEASON.
Since it means nothing, then I’d expect 90210 to be gone for sure. if not hanging by it’s teeth.

  • Melanie

@Jarrod I agree with you. I could see a very short final season for 90210 with a retrospective being used to spackle the schedule at midseason next year — but only because Pedowitz has commented about the importance of closure etc. The ratings say cancel it.
I think the CW will jettison everything on Mondays & Tuesdays and start over.
@Tom I don’t think that putting BATB on Fridays is that much out of the question unless the CW plans on keeping the 9PM hour as a rerun, it has to put something there and its not going to be a new show. I could also see HOD there, limping along to syndication just like Nikita.

  • Melanie

    Potential Schedule
    8PM New Show
    9PM New Show

    8PM New Show
    9PM New Show

    8PM Arrow
    9PM Supernatural

    8PM Vampire Diaries
    9PM The Originals

    8PM Nikita
9PM HOD or BATB or scheduled repeat

  • hoohoo

I think beauty and the beast might be renewed simply because kristin kreuk is the lead.. I feel like she’s a cw darling.

  • zun

oh god kristin kreuk cw darling.because of that cw. renew the series. and of course because the leading actress kristin kreuk

  • Dóchas

90210 is a joke and the actors below mediocre. There is nothing left of 90210 to be nostalgic about. I was a hater of the old 90210 and the reinvention so I may be biased. ;)
From the previews I’ve seen of Cult, I don’t think it’ll do much better. I say dump them all but the 3 already renewed and start fresh.

  • freya

@Nick Sure maybe they will sell it to other much bigger network and someone in in 91210 will bone someone from the big three (FOX, CBS ABC) and buy this stinking show in throes of extacy and your show will be renewed LOL.

  • Elle

If I was the head of CW I would do this for 2013-14

    The Carrie Diaries
    Hart Of Dixie

It needs to keep at least one night of fun girly shows and these two have way higher ratings than 90210.

    The Selection

The main reason ratings can suck for a new show on The CW is they have all their lead ins or lead outs be all the low rated shows they have. Start a fresh new night targeted at the Twilight/Hunger Games crowd.

    Tomorrow People

Having a superhero night could help the network as they are all the rage in movies and Arrow needs something that can retain its ratings.

    The Vampire Diaries
    The Originals

They just can’t seem to find a decent lead out for TVD so a spin off seems the most logical.

Supernatural could actually help Nikita’s ratings as ANTM was not sutible and this can intice more genre fans to tune in for the night instead of Tivoing Nikita.

MIDSEASON:Beauty & The Beast as its rating’s haven’t been awful and it could appease fans and slot in where one of the new shows fail.

90210-No point in renewing if it sinks any further it will pull a 0.2 or worse 0.0 maybe no one will tune in?
    Emily Owens MD-Already cancelled
Cult-They haven’t promoted it put it with HOD (REALLY?) this show is gonna flop, hard.

  • Vanessa S.

Why ship Supernatural off to Fridays once again? That’s ridiculous! We were there once and we proved to be a success so we were moved back to Wednesday. And, please, our Friday placement didn’t help Nikita then and Nikita certainly wouldn’t help us now.

  • Melanie

@Elle Supernatural will not be sent back to Fridays – why would the CW do that when ratings have increased on Wed and they have a night that works for them? I don’t think they will split Arrow and SPN up next year.
I doubt they would keep both Carrie & HOD on a single night because they need to improve on the existing ratings, but I could see one or the other paired with a new show. (Blink or Company Town seem somewhat compatible)
In fact that’s probably more realistic than having 5 new shows next fall.

    OK revised schedule:

    8PM New Show
9PM Whichever low rated show doesn’t get cancelled

    8PM New Show
    9PM New Show

    8PM Arrow
    9PM Supernatural

    8PM Vampire Diaries
9PM New Show — The Originals

    8PM Nikita
9PM Whichever other low rated show doesn’t get cancelled or scheduled repeat

  • Davis

    The Carrie Diaries
    Hart Of Dixie

    The Hundred (new)

    The Tomorrow People (new)

    The Vampire Diaries
    The Originals (new)

    Beauty & The Beast

  • Mate

I can’t see them cancelling HOD, its such a cheap show to make compared to TCD..

  • Mate

    My fantasy CW lineup:

    8PM- Hart of Dixie
9PM- The Carrie Diaries (Half Season)
    9PM- New Teen Girl show.

    8PM: Arrow
    9PM: Supernatural (Final Season)

    8PM- The Vampire Diaries

    8PM- Nikita

Amusing that you say the CW should stick to American actors when you are obviously elsewhere and using a translation site.

Actually Jay Ryan on BATB is a well respected actor. You really should check out some of his other work.

  • Justin

@Angellica Sorry to say but TSC is really not coming back. It’s been a year and the sets have dismantled, the contracts are ended and the actors have moved on. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the show and read the books and I was really sad that it got cancelled, but you need to move on and come to terms. It’s really for the best.

  • Amanda

@JulieDawn I wouldn’t listen to melody, that person posts under different users basically copy and pasting the same thing over and over again about BATB in any article remotely related to it.

That’s what some people like to call a “troll”.

  • Justin

Also, I don’t think TCD is that expensive to make. There’s no special effects and all the costumes can be found at vintage stores or purchased at American Apparell. Shooting in NYC… sure, it does cost but filming back-to-back with Gossip Girl, I don’t think it’s anything new to The CW in terms of budget.

I like the show but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was cancelled. However, The CW needs a couple of these mid-tier, cheap to produce shows (i.e. HOD, TCD) to help save funds for their more successful, effects/props focused shows. Plus, no matter what Mark Pedowitz wants, the network will not be able to cough up enough funds for an entire “sci-fi genre-type” network and still be viable.

Some of these pilots sound similar because it’ll help determine which ones really DESERVE a budget to back them.
