Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 10, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
90210   0.58
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.66
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.84
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.84
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 0.97
Supernatural renewed 1.35
Arrow renewed 1.49
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.86

All season I've been writing that the only way 90210 gets renewed is for a nostalgic short final season. Now, I think its recent ratings slide has likely made that nostalgia too painful for the CW.

90210 relative ratings are much lower than other recent "nostalgia" final season shows. 90210 2013 ratings (not including last night) are currently at just 58% of the CW scripted show average. Compare that to Gossip Girl last spring (83%), and One Tree Hill the spring before (89%). Nostalgia's easier if you're not having to renew a complete ratings albatross, and gets even more painful if you have to cancel a show doing OK to get nostalgic. Nostalgia still could overwhelm ad revenue, but now I'm guessing it's not likely.

Did I jump the gun when I moved Beauty & The Beast to "likely renewed" last week after just 2 weeks of 0.7 ratings? The last episode's 0.6 rating suggests I may have. Stay tuned.

This is looking like an interesting spring for the cancellation bear and the CW. Once Cult premieres, the CW will likely cancel two of Beauty & The Beast, Cult, Hart of Dixie, and The Carrie Diaries (in addition to 90210)  to make room for next season. Considering the level of crazy in some of those fan groups, the bear expects fireworks!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

As much as I love the Arrow/Supernatural combo, CW need to think long term. They need to take advantage of Arrow’s popularity. Supernatural is at the end of its life cycle and should also be used to launch a new show. I know that it didn’t work with multiple shows post TVD but 9pm Thursday is the hardest slot on TV and Greys is a strong show in CW’s target demo, along with Glee. In regards to 90210 they should just announce it as the last season, order a few more episodes put the show out of its misery and let the fans have the ending they deserve. Its not fair to shows that are rating better for it to be renewed and one of them be cancelled to make way for it.

  • Diana

Why can’t you all give Beauty And The Beast a chance?! COME ON NOW! It won a People’s Choice for heaven sakes! & now it’s got great fan base & we’re NOT giving up!! Beauty And The Beast better get a second season & NOT get cancelled!! I’m not gonna let that happen!!!

  • Tom

@ Diana By now, you’re probably one of the last people on the planet who hasn’t dismissed that PCA as meaningless. If you’ll pay attention to the ratings, you’ll note that the so-called great fan base is rapidly diminishing. So much for the PCA.

  • nibehlung

0.5 for TCD and 0.3 for 90210 on Monday? That sounds like “Danger Will Robinson”

  • Melanie

@Justin I forget now where I read it, but apparently there’s quite a bit of visual effects in TCD to retrofit NYC to the 80’s. So I don’t think its substantially less expensive to film.

  • Dave

Nope, it’s like it never existed which I find weird as I live in NY.

  • sally

No pre emptions this week Beasties so ratings hopefully wont be affected like last week. Lets get those ratings back up!!

We are doing better than HOD, 90210, Nikita, TCD lets just continue to keep it up. Plus we do better than those also when it comes to social media!

Dont let Tom and the other haters get to you. They simply want the show to fail.

  • H

Look it’s Tom again trashing BatB. That’s about as original as “The Originals”. I think it’s time for some new blood instead of the number of Schwartz productions already been given more than enough opportunity on the network.

  • Claudia

Im really tired of reading Ala Nikita, Ala TSC…and everything has to be against BATB, seriously this show is becoming so popular on the internet circle, that their fans are growing and the haters as well. Why would people spend their time hating and giving negative criticism about a show they dont even like. At the end of the day none of us here are CW executives, we can write all we want but this will be decided a la CW pocket guys. Nikita, Hod, BatB, TCD, 90210, they all have the lowest ratings in the CW right now and they will decide not by heart or what audience they lose is almost the same amount each one, well not including the 90210’s which is the lowest. Remember the CW shows are not only based on the ratins also its popularity, internet and netflix sales, worth the syndication, production expenses, the bottom line here is MONEY!!!!!

  • Tom

Trashing “the Originals” before it’s even been greenlit? Blaming preemptions for a decline of over 300k viewers in the last three weeks? It looks like the Beasties are hearing footsteps. But I certainly agree you should put down your Nicholas Sparks novel and watch the show. You might as well have something to do on Valentines Day.

  • Justin121

The CW has 7 hours to fill.

    3 go to new shows.

4 go to Nikita, Hart of Dixie, Beast, Carrie Diaries.

Cult, 90210 can hope for half-a-season pickup.

    I don’t see any “battles” or “toss-ups” taking place…

  • Justin

@Melanie I think I heard that too. Though, even with that, it still wouldn’t be one of the most expensive to produce.

@Justin121 The CW wouldn’t just pick up only three new shows. They’d pick up maybe 1-3 more shows for fall/midseason spots. Which means that possibly one or two more bubble shows could get the axe.

  • Dude

My guess is Hart of Dixie and Cult get cancelled. If they give Hart of Dixie a 3rd season they almost have to give it a 4th. The Carrie Diaries may slide through this year but I think it’ll be cancelled next season.

  • AYM

I honestly cannot see how Carrie Diaries would be renewed. It doesn’t even have anything to do with the original Carrie character from SITC. Her back-story is totally wrong. Seriously how hard would it have been to get that part of her history correct? In SITC, Carrie lived with her mother…her dad left them when she was 5…her mother didn’t die, she wasn’t left with her moms closet full of shoes…it was a tough upbringing. Now, I realize the CD are supposed to be based off the books, but the majority of viewers are familiar with the HBO series…so why change a major detail like that? Knowing it’s nothing remotely like the original character makes me simply not want to watch…obviously I’m not alone judging on the ratings.

  • Win

Cult. Cult. What can I say. I watched the pilot. While it’s such a rushed mess. There’s some potential there, and the fact that they want to do more cable-like seasons… may have a shot. BIG maybe.

It’s got me more interested than the 3 episodes of the following waiting on my dvr. I can say that much.

though, Jessica Lucas always looks like she’s trying to hard to be surprised, if that makes any sense.

  • Unknown

I HATE The CW for canceling Ringer last year but they should renew Nikita, it’s the only show worth watching on The CW.

  • Bizarro

I think Beauty and Hart will be renewed (Hopefully) because compared to the other shows they are not stable at all! Once The CW stopped promoting TCD a little bit the ratings went down. Now you have two shows that get a .7 now and then (Beauty with more nows) and they don’t need that much promotion to get their stable numbers. We know CW is a cheap network, so I’m guessing for sure that Nikita and Hart will be renewed because of syndication for both. Beauty is a likely renewal and Carrie and Cult are a toss up or more of a likely cancellation for Cult since it does have the death slot. 90210 if it continues a trend of .3’s and .4’s it deserves a cancellation. I like the show but I like Hart and Beauty better and would be disappointed if one of them was cancelled and 90210 got to stay for a pitiful final season! Why can’t the CW tell their shows that are doing bad to rap it up during the season instead of giving them another one. This is the reason why, Cw gets a ton of backlash when they cancel a show!

  • v

CW is finally going away from soaps, and if you see there pilot’s its all genre shows.

    Wed is full.
Thursday: The Originals, slam dunk pickup.
Friday: Top Model/Nikita. MId-season slot available.

    The have to rebuilt Mon/Tues.
CW picked up 5 shows this year, im guessing they will do the same.

  • H

‘Trashing “the Originals” before it’s even been greenlit?’

Who’s trashing the originals? I said it wasn’t original based on the concept, and it isn’t. They might as well extend TVD for two hours and have flashbacks littered throughout it. I’m not the one who habitually mocks a show as having poor acting and writing. Your denigration of BatB is tiresome. Get a new shtick.
