All season I've been writing that the only way 90210 gets renewed is for a nostalgic short final season. Now, I think its recent ratings slide has likely made that nostalgia too painful for the CW.

90210 relative ratings are much lower than other recent "nostalgia" final season shows. 90210 2013 ratings (not including last night) are currently at just 58% of the CW scripted show average. Compare that to Gossip Girl last spring (83%), and One Tree Hill the spring before (89%). Nostalgia's easier if you're not having to renew a complete ratings albatross, and gets even more painful if you have to cancel a show doing OK to get nostalgic. Nostalgia still could overwhelm ad revenue, but now I'm guessing it's not likely.

Did I jump the gun when I moved Beauty & The Beast to "likely renewed" last week after just 2 weeks of 0.7 ratings? The last episode's 0.6 rating suggests I may have. Stay tuned.

This is looking like an interesting spring for the Cancellation Bear and the CW. Once Cult premieres, the CW will likely cancel two of Beauty & The Beast, Cult, Hart Of Dixie, and The Carrie Diaries (in addition to 90210)  to make room for next season. Considering the level of crazy in some of those fan groups, the bear expects fireworks!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

They might even give 90210 a few episodes to close in the summer?

  • MarcJames87

I still get annoyed about Ringer. I find The CW annoying because you make the effort to watch their first season shows, then they go and cancel them with no real conclusion/ending.

  • JulieDawn

    @MarcJames87

And that’s different than what other networks do because…?

  • Charmed

The Carrie Diaries has to be renewed, it and Hart Of Dixie are the only cute and fun shows left :(

Even if Beauty and The Beast and The Carrie Diaries are basically the same shows in terms of ratings strength, I think the cw should make their decision in terms of what makes sense in terms of next year’s schedule. Whether it is one or the other that is renewed, it will be the “last” renewed show and it will go to fridays IMO. Beauty and The Beast is a far better fit with Fridays and with Nikita than the carrie diaries and that is what the cw should focus on IMO. I have never watched any of these shows, but this my opinion.

I assume that Hart will be renewed and I stand by that. I think it is a tad stronger than the other two in terms of ratings, and it is a second year, which in the cw universe, is a big big factor IMO. So that one is not as bubblish as the other two.

    I would go with:

    Monday
    The Selection
The Tomorrow People or The Hundred, whichever they like the most

    Tuesday
    Company Town
    Hart of Dixie

    Wednesday
    Arrow
    Supernatural

    Thursday
    The Vampire Diaries
    The Originals

    Friday
    Nikita
    Beauty and The Beast

Also, I expect something like Oxygen to be picked up, as it could fit basically in every night and work its way in as a midseason replacement for whichever new show is performing the worst.

  • Anthony C.

BATB is toast! 0.5…HAHA!!! TCD and HOD will be renewed!!

  • Charmed

TCD season 2 here we come! Goodbye B&TB.

  • Charmed

Sooooooo happy about B&TB flopping this week, sorry beasties, but I support TCD.

  • Win

where are all those rabid BatB fans hiding? Still recovering from their twilight and ice cream hangovers? C’mon give some Fan Excuse Bingo points.

  • Charmed

    What were B&TB half hours?

  • Dakota

3 shows have been renewed, and if the CW is hopeful for their new shows, than they will split up Arrow/Supernatural. Nikita will get renewed for syndication. That’s 4 renewed shows. CW usually gets 3 new shows, which means there are 3 slots left.

Cult, ANTM, BaTB, TCD, 90210, and HOD are going to be fighting over the tree slots. ANTM could be renewed just for summers, and I doubt that Cult will be renewed. That means that BaTB, TCD, 90210, and HOD are fighting for 2-3 spots. (depending on if ANTM is in reg. season or if the CW air repeats with NIKITA on friday)

    MY GUESS:

    Monday
    The Carrie Diaries
    Hart of Dixie

    Tuesday
    The Hundred (NEW)
    Supernatural

    Wednesday
    Arrow
    The Tomorrow People (NEW)

    Thursday
    The Vampire Diaries
    The Originals (NEW)

    Friday
    NIKITA (new)
    Cult or Beauty or ANTM

  • Win

The CW will not, I repeat will not split up arrow/supernatural. It is the only full programming night that they have doing well by their standards in both hours. Keeping them together and promoting that success will surely spin a profit for them.

  • Charmed

The Secret Curcle had a 0.8 for the episode that aired in this week last season, so B&TB is doing even worse than that.

  • Charmed

  • Charmed

Hope BATB doesn’t adjust up…. It would be a treat to see it adjust down, but I’ll take what I can get.

  • Charmed

    B&TB didn’t adjust up!

  • Charmed

    TCD season 2!!!!!!!!

  • halloween

Beauty and the Beast has same ratings as Nikita now….time to worry

  • Revenger

I feel like 90210 will get a final season even with the low ratings the last couple weeks. If you look at the episodes from before the winter hiatus, it was getting 0.6’s and 0.5’s, but as soon as they move it to the Monday slot GG had, it sinks immediately… I feel like that timeslot should go to ANTM, or a show that could beat the death trap, like One of the higher rated shows. Also, remember that they don’t renew/cancel solely on ratings, they do look at DVR, and online sales, and I read that 90210 does really good online, and on DVR. Also It’sa pretty cheap show to produce. I also read a comment about CW ending their teen soaps. Even if 90210 were to be cancelled, it wouldn’t be long, before they picked up another. They do really well with Teen soaps, and supernatural shows… One tree hill is the longest running show excluding ANTM. Gossip girl lasted six seasons, and 90210 has lasted five, and possibly six. Teen soaps thrive on a channel like the CW. I’m hoping for atleast a final season, but even if not then there will be another teen soap soon.
