Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 10, 2013):

An anecdote from last May's Fox upfront meeting was amusing, and is again topical. When asked what he would tell Kiefer Sutherland after his show (Touch) was being moved to Friday, Fox chief Kevin Reilly replied "Hey, you're still on the air". After last Friday's disastrous premiere ratings (1.1, 0.9 for the hours) for Touch, I wonder what he'll tell him now that the show is certain to be canceled?

Even though it's not in the calculations above, I did see the drop in The Following's ratings last night. It will have to drop a lot further before it's in any danger, but there must now be at least a little "Alcatraz Anxiety" at Fox.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I thought Touch Season 2 premier was pretty awesome. The acting was great and the story was suspenseful. Jack Bauer is back folks! Way better! Can’t wait to see what happens next week.

  • Mirelle

No! I love Touch! It is such a truly great, intelligent, well-acted, creative series that keeps, at least myself, on the edge of my seat. The two hour-season 2 premiere was amazing, and worth the wait. I don’t want this to be it… But, if it is, I’ll just enjoy what is left of the series.

  • Synu

I`m from Italy and i really like Touch , I hope a miracle will come and save this show.

I guess FOX was a bit too hasty when they cancelled Fringe. Touch is doing worse though it’s only in its second season.

“I wonder what he’ll tell him now that the show is certain to be canceled?”

    Hey, your show is dead.

  • cas127

Fridays are a puzzlement, network programming-wise.

The nets know Friday is a low-viewership night (almost as bad as Saturday) but they just can’t seem to (fully) grasp the nettle and give up original programming on Fridays.

Instead, they sort of half-ass it, and mostly use Fridays as a network hospice.

It kinda reminds me of Brokeback Mountain – “Damn, I don’t know why I just can’t quit you…”

I know everybody is interested in a 24 movie, but since 24 was a gimmick show

Fans liked more about the show than just the gimmick.

Kiefer needs a better storyline and plot than Touch. Give him another pump-fisting, adrenaline-driven thriller of a show like 24 and he’ll last another 8 yrs on Fox. Don’t give up on Kiefer. I want another awesome show like 24 with him.

  • svpike

god forbid you have a show that has a heart felt message that each episode ends happy, but crap like the following does well!

  • fringewillget5seasons

Touch is going to bite the dust, Fringe may have limped to syndication but Touch will never make it, or at least should never.

The Following will have to keep sinking to get axed but it shouldn’t surprise anyone when it does drop.

Fox is straight up sad. Idol isn’t going to go back up, X Factor is practically irrelevant, their Tuesday comedies are on par with NBC and New Girl is not a strong anchor, probably will only ever get worse as one too. Their new dramas don’t last more than two seasons and Glee fell a very long ways. Singing programs won’t even help them anymore. Better work on finding some valid pilots, Fox.

Bones is a solid performer for Fox but it’s stuck in the low 2s.. compare to CBS and ABC staples.

  • JustMe

FOX needed to cancel fringe. I watched every episode but the first two seasons that were just replayed on SCI were so much better than the rest. It started to suck after the alternate universe stuff. Many of us watched Touch because of Keifer from “24” but it’s just not interesting. First season was convoluted and I couldn’t even get thru first hour of this season’s premiere. It was just plain boring. Fri night dvdr: Spartacus and Banshee!!!

  • Opinador Objetivo

The problem with “The Following”, is too many killings. Every episode is kind of heavy; too many flashbacks, too many kills.

The acting is good though, especially James Purefoy, but the writing … not so much.

  • Jeffty

Touch was almost a family show in Season 1 and while the concept was obviously not doing much for FOX ratings-wise and thus not sustainable, it’s just not the same show now, and with its apparent throat-slashing-of-the-week, not terribly fun to watch. The kid (Jake) is now the most dispensible element of the show.

  • Nick

    @whoever said this

“Glee’s ratings aren’t bad enough for Friday so you people putting up fantasy schedule are just imagining things. Glee’s ratings are still good enough to keep in on a night that isn’t friday.”

On any other network, yes, Glee’s 1.15 index would keep it away from Fridays. But Fox has a small schedule (14 hrs vs. 22), and there is less places for Glee to go. So, on Fridays it goes. Besides, it should have a 8 pm slot, and there aren’t any of those open on any other days.

  • ars041

even if what you say is correct, Friday is the death slot when it comes to tv. That’s why Fringe and Touch did and are doing so terribly. If they were in the middle of the week the numbers I am not saying would be great but they wouldn’t be as bad. So considering Glee is in Fox’s top 2 or 3 of scripted shows they can’t move it to Friday because then it would tank the ratings even more. I have noticed that for this whole year Glee has been getting 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 ratings consistently so glee has a consistent rating every thursday and has found its true fan base who are true fans of the show and will keep watching until the show ends

  • gordana

I’m still convinced that Chicago Code, Lie to Me, and Human Target would have done better for Fox than what they have now. If The Following tanks, they are in pathetic shape wrt serial dramas.

    Fringe is over

  • PBmomhildabowen

The show has made some really good changes that were holding it back in season 1. I hope that would take another look at it because it is worth another shot. The show has settled down into a mythos , and lots of cool Easter eggs if you are into looking for them.

  • Ben

Right, sorry, exchange Fringe for NEW drama.
