An anecdote from last May's Fox upfront meeting was amusing, and is again topical. When asked what he would tell Kiefer Sutherland after his show (Touch) was being moved to Friday, Fox chief Kevin Reilly replied "Hey, you're still on the air". After last Friday's disastrous premiere ratings (1.1, 0.9 for the hours) for Touch, I wonder what he'll tell him now that the show is certain to be canceled?

Even though it's not in the calculations above, I did see the drop in The Following's ratings last night. It will have to drop a lot further before it's in any danger, but there must now be at least a little "Alcatraz Anxiety" at Fox.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

at least touch is something different in comparison to the same old shows like cops, lawyer and medical give it a chance.it is very well written but have to pay attention to story, and people don’t want to do that.
Seth has Flintstone reboot coming this fall or next year spring!
I hear the Flintstones reboot has been put on ice. I think it won’t happen until American Dad ends to be honest.

Also, Fox has 13 episode order of animated comedy Murder Police. Judging from how they’ve done previously, I suspect American Dad will be pushed to the 7:30 slot. The Cleveland Show is of course dead now – they will have aired all the episodes by the end of this season and still haven’t put in another order.

People don’t appreciate good writing, Touch is better off on another network, it’s that good! It’s definitely niche programming! I love Touch!

  • try harder 3

LOL @ the plants (sam and Phil) making Touch to be The Wire 2.0: ‘Pay attention to story’, ‘VERY well written’, ‘niche programming’… Puh-lease.

  • Kate

Amazing in so many ways… That people are to dim-witted to understand the full depth of this show, including how people HAVE to speak and how many times Jake’s name is required to be spoken… I guess all you negative people just aren’t bright enough to watch and appreciate this show!

  • Rachel S.

Anyone who calls Touch “boring” has clearly not watched enough of it. If you saw yesterday’s episode you would’ve literally had a heart attack from the intensity. Blood, deaths, fights, killings, backstories yet to be told…

    I was crying.

what do you expect they put it on —on Friday night when anyone that fits the demographic audience is getting away from Tv–and dating or winding down

there hasn’t been a hit show on Friday nights since the Partridge Family and the Flintstones—were on

Thanks Fox now I will go to Netflix and kill the cable–I guess that horrible Kevin Bacon show will be back–it should have been a feature movie –when this had so many possibilities–it’s all for the better I bet they kill off Lucy

Touch is a great show. Sad that most common tweeting facebook types can’t follow a show that is intriguing, very well written, well acted and explores topics that require some thoughtful consideration.

touch canceld = 24 movie i dont thin so because kiefer is aproched for yet an other lead role in an NBC serries he is asked to play the crimnal of the show so if he says yes to that the plans for 24 movie are on hold yet agian.

and touch isnt that bad at al okey some time the main plot is a bit hard to see where they are aiming to go but i think jake is kind of cute some time when he just runs of or on total unexpected moments is just doing that one thing that we normal thinkin pepole wont do.

here in holland where the serries isn’t even picked up by anny broadcaster and probely wont just as with XIII and a bunch of other good serries that are broadcasted by NBC ABC of Showcae the dutch broadcasters only seem to have an contract with CBS because onley theire hit serreis like CSI,CSI:NY and CSI Miami where here just after the fist seasons of all there finsched airing in the US.

we later got BONES and NCSI and al that kind of serreis but i personaly dont like them liked touch csi ny and XIII mutch more. i fact so mutch i paid my father the overpriced packege of our all in one Profider to get CBS/NBC and FOX here to see al the serreis i love.

Touch… Premise food,,but a bit of a sleeper…. Any question as to cancellation? Look at episode 8′ not two minutes in, they forgot to drag the dirt between takes in the desert….. Minute 4, he looks the door from the OUTSIDE of the room, when the looking mechanism is clearly in the inside. Fox has already turned their backs on Touch. Oh, we’ll.
