This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the ABC Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

That thud you heard on Thursday night was the 1.4 adults 18-49 rating for the premiere of Zero Hour, the Cancellation Bear's latest meal in ABC's Thursday 8pm timeslot. Enjoy it while you can, it's certain to be canceled.

Happy Endings has been downgraded to certain to be canceled. It didn't make the headline this week, but there's always next week!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Want to know what the ABC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Here are my predictions for renewal/cancelation:
CANCEL: Happy Endings, Zero Hour, The Neighbors.
RENEW: Modern Family, Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, The Middle, Last Man Standing, Revenge, Scandal, Malibu Country, Suburgatory, Nashville.
(Note that the first one listed in each catergory is the farthest to cancel/renew and then the last one listed is the most in the middle.

@9Blu- How could anyone confuse NBC with TNT. TNT’s programming is 10 times that of what NBC is. I wish TNT would run original programming M-F, I would barely have to change the channel

  • Daryl

I have zero confidence in American TV. The writing has to be the most banal ever.

The writing talent pool is in desperate need of a draining. The current crop just make crap after crap..

  • Ben

    @HV
I think the Neighbours will be renewed.

  • Fred

Just read a lnong very detailed article in TV GUIDE MAGAZINE about many of favored pilots for next season. Not sure if website has exact article.

  • Fred

sorry, long. Really miss that edit feature from years ago.

  • Shack steer

My wife and I looked forward to watching this show,HOWEVER, we will not be watching because the background(?) music is so loud that we can not understand what the characters are saying! Very annoying to watch!

  • Frances

Love the show, but can hardley understand what there saying because of the music being so loud

  • Frances

my coment was for zero hour

  • victoria

Interesting that Nashville and Revenge have both dropped further in the index since last week – maybe probable renewal is not so certain.

  • Bluedestiny

Zero Hour probably got bad ratings, because nobody knew it was on. What show premieres in January with no marketing? Never heard of it until this week when I saw it was on my DirecTV schedule started 15 minutes earlier and it caught my eye with a “paranormal” tag. What’s that? – I wondered, and looked it up today. Didn’t know if it was the first episode or not, never heard of it.

How can you get ratings when you introduce a show in January… and nobody knows it?

  • TheCrowSeenU

Zero Hour dies because it’s the stupidest time slot for it. Let’s see the history too…Flashforward, My Generation, Charlie’s Angels, Missing, Last Resort…and Ugly Betty’s over-life before.

  • King Crab

It has been a terrible mid-season for all the networks. Mid-season shows usually premiere lower but we are seeing record low premieres this year.

  • Elijah

What is the chance that TBS picks up Happy Endings like it did Cougar town?

  • Darcy

Revenge should NEVER have moved from Wednesday at 10. Seriously, it was a surprise hit in that slot, it had no competition, and Nashville just isn’t rating as well as Revenge was/could be right now. I get why it was moved to Sunday, but why fix what ain’t broken? ABC needs to learn this. Suburbatory did well after The Middle last season, so why not leave it there? ABC constantly risks the successes the have to try and make new ones. I get that they need new programming each season, but just plug the whole like Tuesday at 9pm and Tuesday at 10, etc. ABC needs to stop moving things that work because it’s damaging their network overall, and it’s why they’ll end up fourth again.

  • Jon

@HV There is no way the neighbors will be cancelled, unless something unforseen happens and it plummets in the ratings over the couple of months.

  • HV

    @Ben @Jon
Let’s say that The Neighbors is renewed. I think that HTLWYP(FTROYL) will get renewed, and same for Family Tools (unless it’s first two episodes are a complete disaster in ratings). This means that the amount of comedy slots you have is equal to the amount of returning comedies. This means the number of new comedies in the fall equals the amount of comedies held for midseason. I doubt that ABC would go down that road.

  • Holly

    HTLWYP(FTROYL)

You know your show title is far too long when even the acronym is longer than most show names.

  • omabin

ABC has announced their plans to possibly spin-off the Mad Heater character from Once Upon a Time, per deadline. If this holds, would they go for a Ouat/Spin off block on Sundays? Not sure what to think of this

  • POI

I only watch Modern Family Revenge Happy Endings and Last Man Standing because the stupid network canceled everything else i watch or ruined it like Suburgatory going to stick with these shows but not going to watch anything new and i think Happy endings will get canceled so i might consider not watching anything live on this network ever again they deserve low ratings.
