This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the CBS Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

While the Cancellation Bear is away on vacation, you could do worse than tangle over which of the low rated CBS bubble dramas will meet his jaws. As noted in the table, I'm leaning towards CSI:NY, but I admit my case vs. The Good Wife or The Mentalist being canceled instead is weak. None of those three shows cancellations would surprise me (and at least one of the three certainly will be canceled). Their futures are are likely tied to syndication revenues for the CBS Studios shows and licensing fees for The Mentalist, neither of which are public information.

Think of the bear on the beach while you discuss.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

CBS reversing The Mentalist and The Good Wife tonight. Sign of something for next season?

  • TN

Keep CSI-NY!!!! I watch it every Friday night.

  • Rebecca

Now that Simon Baker has asked to be let out of his contract and let the current season of The Mentalist be his last, that probably means The Mentalist would end this season? I don’t watch the show but he IS the mentalist, so there goes the main character if he leaves. Can’t imagine they’d get someone else to play him, but maybe. Someone posted a link to the article over on the Sunday ratings thread (page 9 I think).

  • HAPPY!

CBS should try holding 1 or 2 new comedies for midseason

  • Rebecca

^ Never mind about what I said re: Simon Baker. Turns out that article link on the other thread I mentioned might be bogus. Didn’t know that before. I don’t watch the show, but good luck to the fans with whatever happens.

  • Cassie

Keep CSI: NY I love it it’s my fave show on cbs of all.

  • ketlyn

POR FAVOR mantenha CSI NY AMO O SHOW POR FAVOR

  • Piper

The Mentalist’s is the equivalent to ABC’s Elementary and should stay. It’s the time/day that is hurting it. Also the Red John thing is a little played out, however, it could make a comeback as most people enjoy a good detective show. The Good Wife has completely gone away from the original storyline. “The GOOD Wife” was what everyone wanted to watch. Now her character is just like everyone else on every other show. I think most people liked rooting for her being the underdog in the beginning. The story line has just changed way too much. Just my two cents.

  • Holly

    @Piper,

The Mentalist’s is the equivalent to ABC’s Elementary

    Huh?

  • Gayle

The Good Wife is one of the better shows and can’t be cancelled!!! There are too many reality shows that are just garbage and wonder about our society and where it’s going??/

  • A

It’s ridiculous if Good Wife is cancelled! It gets amazing reviews and awards. The only reason why it’s ratings aren’t good is because CBS gave it a bad time slot where viewers are constantly stuck watching it late due to football and the Amazing Race.

It would be a terrible thing to end a great show just because of a terrible time slot.

  • John Allen

The Mentalist is a great show with a fabulous cast. It deserves 8 years at least. Simon Baker beats the heck out of most TV actors.

  • todd

keep csi ny its a great show .i love it.

  • Tara

I hope they keep CSI NY. I’m already pissed that they cancelled CSI Miami. They should cancel the first CSI. Most of the original cast has left.
