Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 14, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
90210   0.54
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.65
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.81
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.83
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.90
Supernatural renewed 1.36
Arrow renewed 1.50
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.76

This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the CW Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

After two 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings to start 2013 for Beauty & The Beast I moved it up to "likely to be renewed". Now after a 0.6 and a 0.5, I'm moving it back to a "toss up" with Hart Of Dixie and The Carrie Diaries.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Surely 90210 getting 0.2 must mean it’s getting cancelled this season…

  • Tony

NIKITA <3 it will be awesome if it get renewed..I can`t wait for the next episode this friday..

  • Dillan

Bye B&TB. Honestly, every other show has an advantage over it due to its huge lead in.

  • Win

    c’mon Hart of Dixie!

  • Honwy Badger

Bye Bye low and dropping ratings Carrie Diaries and 90210

    On the CW, The Carrie Diaries garnered a 0.4, down 20 percent from last week’s 0.5 adults 18-49. 90210 earned a 0.2, down 33 percent from last week’s 0.3 adults 18-49 rating

Honestly this fight between HoD, TCD and BatB is like the Hunger Games of TV. I wonder what will happen to Carrie Diaries, since it got a 0.4 last night.

  • Dude

I think the real cancellation death match is between Hart of Dixie and The Carrie Diaries. I see Beauty and the Beast getting another season (with a crappier timeslot) but I’m positive one if not both will be scrapped. The Carrie Diaries seems almost like a sure thing since its ratings are so unstable and its only the first season but I’m also not sure they’ll want to renew Hart of Dixie knowing they’ll have to drag it to season four for syndication. It seems the most likely option is to cancel both and start fresh.

I like “ Hart Of Dixie “ on CW, the writers have to move on from the Zoe Hart and George Tucker attraction thing, that story has been played out, time to move on, come on writers you are better than this.

Also for “ Hart Of Dixie “ on CW, the enough of the Wade and Zoe Hart rough times in their relationship, that story has been played out, time to move on and make them happy in their relationship, come on writers you are better than this.

Same for Lavon, time for him to be happy.

“ Hart Of Dixie “ on CW, if all the writers are going to do is have rough times for everyone, people will stop watching. In fact many people already have stopped watching, and even big fans like me will stop watching, and it was my favorite television show. But one more rough times in relationships show, or one more Zoe Hart and George Tucker attraction thing, and I will stop watching. I guess the writers just ran out of ideas. So sad for what was such a great show.
Come on writers you are better than this.

If HoD get 0.5-0.6 tonight, consider it certain renewal!

  • DD

Yeah I know Arrow, TVD and Supernatural have already been renewed, but it feels so good to see Nikita having the most smily faces :D

  • Paul

90210 is done. Carrie Diaries can still save itself but likely a goner, too. Hart of Dixie stays simply because CW can’t clean that much of its house.

  • Jane

I think HOD gets a renewed and BATB over TCD. Funny how Nikita’s position is the most secure of them all.

  • Shana

Team Niki Here we go again season 4…

  • Honwy Badger

“ Hart Of Dixie “ on CW will be renewed because it goes against the top rated shows like “ The Voice “ on NBC and “ NCIS “ on CBS and still delivers consistent ratings. The CW could not find any other show that will do better.

  • tv4critics

To be honest the only reason l can see BATB being renewed is if ratings go up a bit and the CW decides to have a more sci-fi oriented lineup next season which it appears to want.

The pilots are pretty much sci-fi except for company town
the tomorrow people, the originals and the selection probably have the best chance if their pilots are good.

almost forgot BATB could be renewed to save face everyone remember Nikita’s declining ratings in season 1 cancelling a second show in the same time slot is a bit humiliating.
if it is renewed it’s going to Friday with Nikita.

  • Starship

Carrie Diaries is a goner, especially after last night’s 0.4, even 90210 has a better chance of getting a 10-episode final SUMMER season with it’s 0.2. Unless Hart of Dixie drops below 0.5, it should be moving to the certain to be renewed category in the next week or two. Also, I’m pretty sure at least one of Beauty and the Beast or Cult will be renewed, so that will be the CW suspense from now until the end of the season.

  • JacobYates

How many shows does the CW renew each year? How many does it cancel? Is there a pattern?

  • Mike

I don’t want to see BATB go, because I’m really enjoying it. I only Arrow and TVD. I would give BATB up though if it mean Tomorrow People going to series. That is the show I’d most like to see of the new stuff they are working on. The originals too, but mostly Tomorrow People.

  • AA

Hart Of Dixie will get renewed because The CW is desperate for some syndication dollars.

  • Angellica .T.

Can u guys please pretty please renew the secret circle.
