This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the CW Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

After two 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings to start 2013 for Beauty & The Beast I moved it up to "likely to be renewed". Now after a 0.6 and a 0.5, I'm moving it back to a "toss up" with Hart Of Dixie and The Carrie Diaries.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

-
From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Angellic. T.
    Stop writhing posts about TSC.
    You know it won’t make it renewed.

  • J

    “What a pathetic and idiotic show, the CW needs to get rid of it and give space to a new good show.”

    But seemingly not as pathetic as you. Who has such a vested interest in the failure of a show except a spiteful person? BatB didn’t cause you to lose your programming, nor does it force you to watch it. Get over yourself.

  • Justin121

    @Bill, Robert, TVBTN, and everyone!

    The CW has 3 renewed shows.

    Below them are 3 toss-upss.

    Below that 1 likely renewal.

    THe CW is renewing 7 shows, D’uh!

    Hence, the shows marked as toss-ups or are “battling for renewal”, really aren’t.

    At least Hart of Dixie is a certain renewal. B&B could meet the Secret Circle fate and Carrie Diaries still hasn’t stabilized at accpetable levels. Though I think both will be likely renewals at a 0.6 for B&B and a 0.5 for Carrie.

    Would CW really want to premiere up to FIVE new shows in the Fall?

    Again, either way, Hart of Dixie is a Certain Renewal.

  • Holly

    @Justin121,

    Are you thinking CW will cancel ANTM or that they’ll just premiere one show in the fall?

  • Brandy

    RSH, it’s pathetic watching shows you don’t like just to bash.I also comment on shows with low ratings, whether I watch them or not, like Nikita.

  • Dave

    @Brandy

    You do the same so I don’t know how you could attack RSH as if he were a criminal.

    You should find something more productive to do with you daily life.

  • Charmed

    Everyone who says BATB being on after TVD doesn’t matter, they don’t know what they’re talking about. Wy was TSC cancelled last year then.They know The Originals will probably get the most of the TVD audience when it airs after it, and they don’t know how BATB perform without TVD, hence why I think Carrie will be renewed over BATB.

  • Sam

    I also believe Carrie Diaries will be renewed over B&TB.

    It’s going to to be the Nikita of The Secret Circle.

  • Justin121

    @Holly,

    1- I heard ANTM will move to summer.

    Even if it doesn’t, ANTM + NIKITA + top 3 = 5 hours. .

    That leaves 5 more hours. HoD, B&B, TCD = 3 hours. That leavs 2 hours for new Fall series.

    That’s within the typical 2-3 new series the CW premieres each fall.

    At worst, 2 out of HoD, B&B, and TCD, will be renewed — not one.

    2- CW seems to be going the timeshare route, as we’ve seen with GOssip Girl, EOMD, Carrie, Cult, and One Tree Hill before that, which opens up a plethora of possibilities for all so-called bubble shows (and even presumed cancellations).

  • Tom

    I’m coming around to the belief that the CW isn’t going to be able to cancel much of anything. Assume that Cult and 90210 are already toast. Assume further that Wednesdays and Thursdays will be filled by Arrow, SPN, TVD and The Originals. That leaves six hours of programming left to be filled. Allocate two of those hours to new series. I doubt if the CW is adding more than three new series, so what’s left are four slots. With Nikita back on Fridays for syndication purposes, that leaves three slots. So, unless Pedowitz really starts spending, the CW would have to bring back HOD, Carrie and B&B. That would continue to kill the network in the ratings, but I can’t see any other options.

  • Holly

    @Justin,

    I think 2 of the 3 could be renewed, but not all three.

  • Richard Steven Hack

    Brandy: “RSH, it’s pathetic watching shows you don’t like just to bash.”

    No, that’s not what I said. Try to understand English. I watch shows I don’t like because I started watching them when they debuted to determine whether they were worth watching. After I determine that they’re not very good, I continue watching them to see if they will ever get any better. If they don’t, I say so. That’s not “bashing” – it’s rational criticism.

    Revolution is the classic case. The show sucks rocks: the premise is brain dead, the acting is poor (with a couple exceptions), the pace is slow, the directing is awful, etc. But it’s getting good ratings (so far.) So I will continue watching. It’s actually a waste of time, and I probably should stop watching as I did with Ringer which became terminally stupid early on in its run. But I’m still wondering if Revolution will ever explain anything about the stupid premise or up its game, before it ends its season. So I still watch.

    “I also comment on shows with low ratings, whether I watch them or not, like Nikita.”

    No, what YOU do is bash shows like Nikita because you prefer other shows like 90210 which are doomed, despite neither show having anything to do with the other. The litany of bogus notions you’ve written here about why Nikita won’t get another season clearly shows an animosity toward the show unrelated to its ratings. It also shows a lack of understanding on why Nikita will get another season, similar to some other posters here.

  • Brandy

    Dave, I actuallly don’t bash shows I don’t watch or watch shows I don’t like just to bash them. I do say Nikita has terrible ratings,has been the lowest rated CW show(which is fact and true) but there’s a difference between that and saying “flop kitCrapkita, Die “.See the difference.I also used to watch Nikita so I’m not not watching it and bashing it and I’m also saying a shows I like have terrible ratings when they like, 90210. Or CD this week or Emily Owens.I also look objectively at ratings,retention, DVr numbers and say nothing of the quality of the show,the writing, the storylines,The acting/actors ect, I foucues on the ratings ect.I don’t go “I hate Revolution but I watch it just to critize everything about it and say “its crap”based on everything besides the ratings like RSH does ,he does it with BaTB too. If I dont like a show or stop liking and watching a show, I don’t keep bashing it,complaining how it’s still on air , I just leave it alone.Why would I waste valuable watching a show I don’t care for then go online and keep critizing it?I do have a life and have better things to do with it than that.Also, me saying Nikita’s ratings are terrible is no different than anyone saying CD , or 90210 or HoD, or BatB has bad ratings so they should be cancelled,so why don’t tell you everyone who bashes a show or a shows ratings to get a life? I’m sure youve also said bad things about certain shows, whether it’s ratings or quality.

  • Brandy

    RSH, I know the reasons Nikita might get another season and my comments are never about me not liking or the quality ,just based on ratings just like you say CD & 90210 are /should be cancelled due to low ratings, I can look at say 90210 ratings wise and business wise and say why it might get another season-cause CW will make money off it-without personal preference.Would it suprise you to know that I DONT prefer 90210?

  • JJA

    Why are people still posting about The Secret Circle?

    The actors have all moved on. For example, Brit Robertson (“Cassie”) has been cast in the CBS pilot “Under the Dome,” which will almost certainly get picked up.

    THE BEST any Secret Circle fan can hope for is a remake, with ALL NEW actors and a revised story. Secret Circle as you know it is DONE!!

  • Danielle

    In my personal experience of watching TV, and with the knowledge of what my friends watch, I feel that a “lead-in” show does NOT guarantee the follow up show to be a hit. I think most show need to gather and maintain a fanbase on it’s own and should not be dependant or count on it’s “lead-in”. Aside from recently, when I started watching BATB, I do not watch back to back programing. I RUN to the TV for Bones, but when it’s done I change the channel, same with Arrow, and until last week, the same for TVD. My TV is not stuck on one channel for the night, I jump around to find the shows I want to watch. I don’t pick my shows because they come before or after something else I watch. And I think, with all the programming available, that’s what a lot of people do. IMO networks need to advertise and not rely on maintaining an audience just because the viewer is too lazy to switch the channel. I’m sorry that your show, TSC was cancelled, I know how much that sucks! But you need to get over it. It’s not coming back. Maybe it had nothing to do with ratings, perhaps there were other factors at play? I personally never watched it, I don’t care for witchcraft, it’s actually my least favourite part of TVD and if I can I fast forward through it, so I can’t comment on it’s quality. Maybe if you let go of TSC you might find another show that’s current and relavent to discuss.

  • Danielle

    As far as the success (or lack thereof) of Cult, is it wrong I’m a little glad? I have missed Alaric and am hoping for a return to Mystic Falls! I miss the bromance between him and Damon!! PLEASE BRING BACK ALARIC!! :D

  • abe silver

    carrie diaries is a goner- the show is just horrible-

  • teshanna

    batb sucks

  • Amanda

    Why do people continue to compare BATB to TSC?

    Outside from sharing the same timeslot, financially and promotional wise they’re both two different elements.

    The season of 2011 CW put a lot time and money into promoting TSC, just like this season CW put a lot time and money into promoting Arrow.

    TSC was suppose to be the big hit show of 2011, it was suppose to be the next TVD due to being based off of a book by the same author.

    TSC also had not one, not two (like BATB) faces representing the series, they had 5! Five more people they could spread around and be the face of the series and that’s not including the supporting actors!

    If BATB does get renewed it’ll be because of those factors. CW is going to think– “Hmm, we have this series here, which we’re hardly putting any money into, yet it’s doing similar to the previous series in that time slot that we were pushing all season of 2011 to be a hit.”

    It all boils down to money and if BATB is cheaper for the CW and still making them a return, it’ll come back regardless if it doesn’t match up to a series previously to it that was doing better numbers, but yet cost a lot more for the network to keep on.
