Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 14, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
90210   0.54
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.65
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.81
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.83
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.90
Supernatural renewed 1.36
Arrow renewed 1.50
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.76

This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the CW Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

After two 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings to start 2013 for Beauty & The Beast I moved it up to "likely to be renewed". Now after a 0.6 and a 0.5, I'm moving it back to a "toss up" with Hart Of Dixie and The Carrie Diaries.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Both Arrow and Beauty and the Beast were expected to be hits. Beauty and the Beast is not some little show.

Thanks to 90210, Cult and Carrie Diaries, the CW demo is averaging 0.53 for the week. The average for the Monday – Tuesday lineup is 0.35 and 965,000 viewers. At this rate, there will probably be half a dozen individual shows on CBS that have more viewers than the 9 CW shows combined.

Since Arrow seemed to be shedding viewers and demo, I wonder if the early renewal announcement last week was done in part to try and stem the loss or get some positive buzz for the show and network which was why the views and demo were up last week.

    Possible Schedule

    Hart of Dixie
    Blink (new)

    The Hundred (new)

    Tomorrow People (new)

    The Vampire Diaries
    The Originals (new)

    ANTM/repeats of new shows

Midseason: The Selection and one bubble show.

There’s hit, then there’s the “it” show. I highly doubt CW was expecting Emily MD and BATB to be the “it” show for their network this season over Arrow.

That’s my point with comparing BATB with TSC which was suppose to be the “it” show of the season of 2011.

Also if you honestly think CW put as much time and money into BATB as they did with Arrow this season, production wise and even promotional wise you are 100% incorrect.

For example CW sent the lead actor of Arrow, Stephen Amell to present at the People’s Choice Awards and appear at The Golden Globe.

Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan weren’t and the only reason Kristin and Jay ended up at the People’s Choice Awards (last minute) was because they ended up winning an award, not because CW had plans for them to appear there from the very beginning. There’s proof of this by both Kristin and Jay stating they found out at the very last minute they would be sent due to BATB winning.

The cast of Arrow were also sent to the FanExpo in Toronto which is like the Comic Con of Canada, yet none of the BATB cast members where sent there regardless of the fact BATB actually films in Toronto!

The Arrow cast was also sent to the New York Comic Con, which again is much closer to the set of BATB then of Arrow’s, which is filmed in the West coast in Vancouver.

CW pushed for Arrow this season to be the “it” show and the same goes for TSC last season.

Does anyone know what the ratings for BATB were last night? I tunes in, and it was an excellent ep. Great ending!! ;)

  • scnfrru

Lmao @ dumbies (batb retarded fans) telling tsc fans to atop talking about it when 3 months frim now they willl be akl crying for somwone ti save beauty and the flop lol

  • scnfrru

Batb fell to a series low last night LMAO, probably a 0.3 or 0.4. It is getting caned soon. Even Nikita is doing better, and so is TCD without leadins

  • Violet

I think Nikita might get renewed. As far as TCD, HoD, and BatB, I’m not really sure. I feel like the network could go either way on those shows. It also depends on the new shows that they have lined up as well.

  • J

    You’re dumb LMAO.

  • feinn

Batb still doing bad behind tvd…move nikita back there and get at least a .7

  • Matt

I think The CW has some really interesting pilots tbh. I know it has five pilots that could be considered scfi/superhero shows in Oxygen, The Hundred, The Selection, The Originals and The Tomorrow People. Of those pilots, I do not see The Selection turning out well but all of the other ones seem like real possibilities.

If The CW’s pilots turn out well…I could see The Tomorrow People, The Originals, The Hundred, and Oxygen all being hits for the network. Blink also seems dark and different so I could see it being greenlighted as well. The Originals would be perfect with TVD, The Tomorrow People would work with Arrow, The Hundred and Supernatural seems like a nice fit. Blink/Oxygen could be sent to the tough Monday slots.

I am not sure where TCD and Hart of Dixie would fit in with the direction the network is going so it seems more likely that The CW spares Beauty and The Beast and pickups most of its new pilots.

Brandy: “RSH, I know the reasons Nikita might get another season and my comments are never about me not liking or the quality ,just based on ratings”

Wait, what? :-) You’ve spent post after post listing reasons it won’t get another season. When I blow that away, NOW you say you understand BUT it’s still the ratings?

Not to mention how many times have I pointed out that EVERYONE ALREADY KNOWS Nikita’s ratings are bad (except for a Friday show on the pathetic CW network)?

Can you contradict yourself any more than in that sentence?

“I can look at say 90210 ratings wise and business wise and say why it might get another season-cause CW will make money off it-without personal preference.Would it suprise you to know that I DONT prefer 90210?”

    I guess you can.

    Wait, what? :-)

First you can look at the PATHETIC 90210 ratings this season and STILL SAY there is a “business reason” it will get another season? There is NO business reason 90210 can make any money off that show based on its current ratings – unless the network literally has no other show they can slot in there.

Then you claim you don’t prefer 90210?

Seriously. Give it up. You prefer 90210 over Nikita. You revealed that in an earlier posts. You got caught. Let it go.

Nikita is going to get renewed. 90210 is not. It’s that simple.

  • Richard Steven Hack

I looked up what The Selection was about. A “Hunger Games wannabe.”

I expect the audience to be smarter than that and not swallow a rip-off show.

On the other hand, Revolution is a “Hunger Games wannabe” – without the “Games” part, admittedly – and it seems to be surviving.

Full disclosure: I have to admit the “Hunger Games” movie did not impress me, so I may be biased against this show, just as I’m biased against Revolution for being a stupid premise.

  • geronl

SO Sex & the City High School Edition is failing? Good!

I guess Sex & the City Kindergarten edition will be next. gag

  • JJA

The Selection is not a Hunger Games wannabe. They’re saying it is in order to draw-in viewers, but it’s actually very different. For one, the Selection is not nearly as depressing.

I think the CW is trying to pick between “The Selection” or “Oxygen” as a possible companion to the Vampire Diaries. We can assume that B&TB, if renewed, will be moved to a different night.

Frankly, I don’t think “The Originals” will get picked up. Fan reaction has been somewhat tepid. Also, I think VD fans want Rebecka & Matt to find true love, so moving her to another show won’t go down too well.

  • halloween

3 episodes with a .5 for beauty and the beast.
    could be canceled

  • Charmed

    Bye BATB!

  • halloween

i think cw needs 4 new shows for fall

  • Bizarro

Well CBS does not think B&TB is doing that bad, in fact CBS Studios tweeted “Attention #Beasties – thanks for tuning in last night — #BATB had its best ratings!” I know the show got a .5 but less face it don’t go dumping bye on a show when you have 3 shows fighting against each other. With one of them falling to a .4. I didn’t say bye to TCD, when it got a .4 or Cult when it got a .3. I just hope Beauty and Hart will go up, the CW will have to focus on something more than the ratings this season. Since 3 of its shows are battling it out or maybe 2. If TCD gets another .4 next week, I’ll remember not to be the bigger person and say bye TCD. These shows still have quite a few more eps left and things could possibly change around. So it would be nice if we kept the byes to ourselves until these shows have 4 more eps left because its a Toss up for all of these shows. This is the main reason why fans of these shows are always arguing. We know at least 1 more new show this season has to be renewed because it will look pathetic if the CW renewed only one new show out of 5.
