Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 14, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
90210   0.54
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.65
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.81
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.83
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.90
Supernatural renewed 1.36
Arrow renewed 1.50
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.76

This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the CW Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

After two 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings to start 2013 for Beauty & The Beast I moved it up to "likely to be renewed". Now after a 0.6 and a 0.5, I'm moving it back to a "toss up" with Hart Of Dixie and The Carrie Diaries.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Dan W – You’re right CW wont axe that many series because they need more originals. I do believe Carrie Diaries could keep the monday slot. No idea where Supernatural will go but I do believe that CW will try to launch a new drama on Tuesdays at 9, Wednesdays at 9 and Thursdays at 9 (The Originals), Nikita will stay on fridays and the aging Supernatural will air Fridays at 9.

    My guess

Renewed – Arrow, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Carrie Diaries, Hart of Dixie, Nikita, 90210 (Short final season)

Cancelled – Gossip Girl, Emily Owens MD, Beauty and the Beast, Cult

  • herpderp

    7pm- The Hundred
    8pm- Oxygen

    7pm- The Tomorrow People
    8pm- The Selection

    7pm- Arrow
    8pm- Supernatural

    7pm- The Vampire Diaries
    8pm- The Originals

    7pm- Beauty & the Beast
    8pm- Nikita

  • João Lucas

Nikita should move to ”certain to be renewed” after a 0.5 of the last new episode. Now Nikki it’s higher than 90210,TCD and equals with BB.

  • Win

Also HoD is pretty consistent with it’s live+7 DVR. It usually always ends up at .9. When factored in it becomes the fourth most watched show on the network.

Not that live+7 maters much. but again, it’s almost always at that level, when they come out. On weeks it gets a .6 it grows .3, on the weeks it gets a .5 it grows .4.

.9 is it’s top out with Live +7
I’d say Hod is certain to be renewed, super stable and closer to syndication.

  • Bizarro

Hart is probably getting renewed because they are going to need another show for syndication. I hope TCD continues to get .4’s and B&TB gets .6’s and .7’s next week. This show gets better and better each episode like Ringer. I would be pissed if Hart or Beauty got cancelled. Three shows I like got renewed, now hopefully the CW will renew the other two in May. I like 90210 but a .2 is terrible and I don’t think it will rebounce like Nikita unless the CW move it back to 8.
Cancelling a show in the same time slot two years in a row. Does not matter to the CW at all!!!!!! Tuesdays at 9 has earned the reputation of the Death Time Slot. So many shows that have premiered there have been cancelled including last year when 3 shows got cancelled.

  • Starship

‘CW always only renews 1 of their 2 or 3 fall dramas and with Arrow already renewed, Beauty and the Beast looks dead. Also BATB’s terrible retention (worse than Secret Circle) and The Originals heading to that slot making it seem like a goner.’

Yes, that’s when they only had 2 or 3 new shows, with 5 new shows this year, cancelling all but 1 would look bad. So they’ll probably renew one more at least, and seeing how Emily Owens was already cancelled and Carrie Diaries bombed, it’s between BATB and Cult for the pity renewal (unless BATB constantly falls between 0.6 and Cult is DOA that is), they’ll have to cancel all in that case…

  • DonnaT

Guys and Gals – there is no way Supernatural will be moved back to Fridays next year(S9); S10 – possibly. SPN is back on fire this season since the move to Wed and still doing well in the “L + 7’s”.

  • Mary Ann

I am betting “Beauty and the Beast” will be renewed for several reasons. (1) Their drop in the ratings this past Thursday is hardly representative of its ongoing trend, since it was competing with the same audience for Valentines Day away from the tube. Here’s betting it will be back up next week. (2) It has a supernatural/science fiction element, which seems to be the CW’s new direction. (3)It has a huge fan following, which the network president has said is important and will be considered.

I am also betting that “Cult” will be successful, and be renewed. It just feels like it will be a hit. Well, we will know soon enough. If it comes out of the gate strong, it will likely stay that way.

  • Brandy

    @Dan W , last season CW cancelled/ended six shows:SC,Ringer,OTH,H8 tr,Remodeled,The Frame
I expect the same this season and were already halfway there:GG,LA Complex,Emily Owens MD. Bubble shows:90210,HoD,CD, Cult,BataB,Nikita.Three will likleybe renewed.
Just like last season,I expect 4-5 new shows next season. So it possible for them to cancel a bunch more or a bunch of shows. They have 10 hours to program and right now only three are for sure taken:Arrow,VD,SPN.
@Dan I don’t think CW “usually renews a Midseason show”, the only times I Remeber that happening are Life Unexpected,LA Complex.Maybe you can give more examples.?

  • Brandy

@Starship, they had five to six new shows last season and only renewed one freshman show:HoD
    Last seasons new shows:
    Secret Circle
    H8 tr
    Hart of Dixie
    La Complex
    The Frame(cancelled before airing).

  • Brandy

Deadline released its prospects so far of CW shows
    Likley Renwal:HoD
    Toss ups:CD,Nikita

  • Dan

@Brandy – Life Unexpected is the only recent example, but CW has mentioned that they like Carrie Diaries and renewing it wouldn’t be out of the question. When the network has 2 midseason dramas, its likely they will renew 1 of them. Cult hasn’t premiered so who knows. If it flops, that gives a better chance for Carrie Diaries, if its a hit then its a worse chance. I don’t see BATB succeeding no matter what happens. It just loses too much of its lead in.

@Starship – I meant 1 of their 2 or 3 fall dramas. When they have a total of 5 for the year (This season is the most new dramas they’ve had) then it’s likely 2 or 3 out of 5. Arrow has been renewed and Emily Owens has been axed. So for the second drama its between Carrie Diaries, BATB, and Cult. Since BATB is a fall series losing its VD lead in, I’m counting that out. And actually Carrie Diaries has risen and done better on Mondays than Gossip Girl and 90210. Thats not much but its good enough for a renewal for CW which has had trouble on mondays. I have no idea what will happen with Cult but unless it builds viewers off the low rated HOD, Cult is a goner. For CW its not so much about how many viewers but if the shows build on its lead in.

  • Tom

@ Brandy Why would the CW move B&B to Friday where viewership is the lowest of any weekday? B&B has failed to attract its target 18 – 34 audience despite being in an excellent timeslot. My hunch is that moving B&B to Fridays would leave it with even fewer adult viewers and a surplus of of the T14 – 17 female demo that seems to be driving social media nonsense like the PCA vote. You still see comments about the PCA here and I doubt if they emanate from adult fans of the show.

  • Brandy

@Dan, they might like it and sure have tried to get it succeed with lots of promotion, reruns on fri and moving it so 90210 wouldn’t drag it down, but with its 0.4 last night, unless it goes back to 0.7s ,I think it’s gone as is BatB on which we agree.

  • Brandy

@Tom , that is just a theory of some people commenting here, same as some speculated SC would be renewed and moved to fri last season.I guess it’s cause of Nikita, people think any show underperforming after VD and still getting 0.5-0.6 will be shipped off to fri and they do need another show there instead of reruns after Nikita.Personsally, since CW didn’t. Do that with SC I think they’ll not do it with BatB either and just cancel it.Yes the ratings would be lower on fri ,which is why SC was cancelled instead of trying it and I think BatB will be too.Facts, Deadline has it as Hopfeul for renwal and it rumored to be cheap to produce,do well online, sell well overseas so it’s possible.Just not Likley IMO.

  • halloween

HoD and BatB may only survive because everything else is failing…but Cult may steal one of their renewals

  • Dan

@DonnaT – Supernatural is doing great but it’s an aging series and CW probably wants to launch a new series Likely Tuesday behind HOD, Wednesday behind Arrow and Thursday behind The Vampire Diaries. CW could move Supernatural to Mondays and pair it with Carrie Diaries and move a potential final season of 90210 to Fridays but Supernatural at 9 would work well Fridays.

  • Dillan

Everything will probably be renewed except B&TB and Cult, with 90210 getting a very short final season. Probably around 6 episodes, and I wouldn’t even be surprised if it airs during the Summer.

  • Nick

What the CW should do for next season:
    8: America’s Next Top Model/The Selection (new)
    9: Hart of Dixie

    8: The Hundred (new)
    9: Supernatural

    8: The Tomorrow People (new)
    9: Arrow

    8: The Vampire Diaries
    9: The Originals (new)

    8: Nikita (full final season)
    9: Beauty and the Beast

Why didn’t you just wait for tomorrow to do the R/C index so that you have the whole week’s data?

  • Russs

The Secret Circle should never have been canceled.
