This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the CW Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

After two 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings to start 2013 for Beauty & The Beast I moved it up to "likely to be renewed". Now after a 0.6 and a 0.5, I'm moving it back to a "toss up" with Hart Of Dixie and The Carrie Diaries.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

-
From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Ans if Beauty & the Beast is renewed in May it will prove that the powers that be simply wanted rid of The Secret Circle.

  • Derek

If I were Mark.. this is what I’d do…

    SUNDAY
    7 | Repeats
    8 | Hart of Dixie
    9 | Blink

    Monday
    8 | Nikita
9 | Beauty and the Beast

    Tuesday
    8 | The Hundred
    9 | Supernatural

    Wednesday
    8 | Arrow
    9 | The Tomorrow People

    Thursday
    8 | The Vampire Diaries
    9 | The Originals

FRIDAY | GIVE IT TO THE AFFILIATES.

  • Holly

    @Derek,

Why do you think trading Sunday for Friday would help any?

  • Freyja

I honestly think 90210 will get a final season announcement like Gossip Girl did, a final 13 episodes then closed out for good.

Depending on how The Cult does and their pilot season turns out, I think TCD, B&TB will be gone.

I think HOD will be renewed it does solid against tough competition, but again it all depends on how well their pilot season turns out.

  • Derek

    MIDSEASON:

    Cult
    Company Town

  • Bizarro

Since Beauty has its own fan base, why does everyone think it will do worse on fridays? We won’t know unless the CW renews it, I know friday is a bad night of television but it usually gets .6′s and .7′s with the occasional .5. So if it moves to friday, it might get more .5′s but the CW like all other networks have lower expectations for their friday shows.

    @Russs
TSC costed a ton of more money than B&TB, also The CW’s 18-49 rating has gone down again so a show requirements to be on the network has prob slid a little.

  • Charmed

What’s was TCD’s half hours? And when will the final be released?

  • MichaelChickless

    Cancelled for sure: 90210

Renewed for sure: Hart of Dixie and Nikita

Toss up: only 1 of either The Carrie Diaries or Beauty And The Beast gets the nod

I don’t watch any CW shows. I wastched most of the Ben Browder episode of Arrow a few weeks back, but that would be the only time I have ever watched CW.

  • Derek

    @Holly

Well, take a look at cable and the other broadcast networks…

Cable channels rarely air original programing on Fridays as they know they are more likely to gain viewers on other nights. Friday is the lowest rated night for the broadcast networks by far – except Saturdays of course.

Sunday is a higher rated/watched night than Fridays.

Plus, The CW’s target demo is more likely to be home on Sundays than Fridays right? And let’s be honet, it can’t get much worse than a 0.2 for The CW can it? lol

I hope Cult does well tonight. If it premieres well and remains stable for the network it would make it slightly easier for the CW in regards to which shows to bring back.

Arrow, SuperNaturaL, and Vampire Diaries are already renewed. We technically have 6 shows on the bubble (even though I consider 90210 to be a goner, but this is the CW so who the hell really knows what to expect!)

If Cult stabilizes at .6-1.0 it will be picked up. that would be 4 shows. Nikita would make 5 for syndication purposes. Hart of dixie would make 6 for a season 3 brining it closer to syndication.

That leaves 90210, Beauty, and Carrie up in the air for pickup. I think only one will make it. I’m just assuming this because I believe CW will premiere 3 new shows next fall with possibly 5 shows picked up altogether for Fall and Misdeason!!

CW do not renew 90210 just give it 4 additional episodes to wrap up and conclude the series this summer in June and goodbye or bonvoyage.

Carrie and Beauty are both horribly rated. Carrie was overly promoted and tanked. Beauty was promoted well and behind the networks number 1 show and is doing the same as Secret Circle last year at a record pace though. One could say Carrie is this years Hart of Dixie with no strong leadin and building its own audience but this is not true. Carrie got way more promotion than Hart ever did. Hart had gossip as a leadin and built from its horrible leadin. Both shows imo don’t deserve a renewal but what else is CW to do? Personally I’m not rootin for any show to get canceled but numbers do not lie, its just unfortunate that more cw viewers don’t have nielsen boxes to prove some of these shows do have viewers!

  • Tom

@ Russs I never missed an episode of TSC, but it’s impossible not to concede that it suffered an epic ratings decline at the end of its run. I liked where TSC was positioned for a second season, but, as I’ve said elsewhere, shows on the CW don’t typically rebound in the ratings. IMO, B&B is completely different. It started out bad, rebounded briefly, and then hit its season low last week. It’s obviously not the only low rated show on the CW, but the acting is poorer than most and so is the writing.

  • Brandy

@Micheallook for the article about next seasons seasons pilota, read that cause it’s on the bottom of that article.I don’t know how to do links.

  • RockStarz

If Beauty and the Beast could manage to hit 0,7 at the end of the season, CW could renew it and ship it off to Friday.

I think, CW could do this next year:

    Monday:
New Show (Company Town? Just a regular drama, audience flow with HOD)
    Hart of Dixie

    Tuesday:
    New Show
    New Show

*I think two new shows are the best idea. Arrow and SPN should stay together and CW doesn’t have another ‘good’ lead-ins*

    Wednesday:
    Arrow
    Supernatural

    Thursday:
    The Vampire Diaries
New Show (The Originals! I’m sure of it! :D )

    Friday:
    Nikita
    Beauty and the Beast

4 new shows in the fall (just one more than last fall), and 1 new show for midseason (just one less than this year) and cult for midseason (should it be a hit, when not – cancel it). Why two midseason-shows? Mark said last year, they want more shows, but the serialized shows only get 13eps per season [like cable].

They need to repair their Monday & Tuesday, Wednesday is doing fine, Thursday and Friday need a good Lead-Out.

  • Walter

Because ratings have been so bad this year, I think the CW will go with another overhaul of their shows. Besides the already renewed, they will probably pick up Nikita and one other show, and then pick 5 pilots. Here is my fantasy schedule:
    Monday: The Tomorrow People, Oxygen
    Tuesday: Company Town, The Selection
    Wednesday: Arrow, Supernatural
Thursday: The Vampire Diaries, The Originals
Friday: Nikita, Something Else that is not a new show (probably Cult)

  • Marcelo

I just want 90210 to be renewed because I’ve always wanted to see a show hitting 0.0 lol

  • Ashley

I really don’t know why people think they are going to separate Arrow & SPN. They are billing it as a package deal right now, even in the early renewal release. Plus, J2 and Stephen Amell are pimping the Wednesday night block all over the place–it makes no sense to ruin the one night of the week that is working

  • Richard Steven Hack

Hod and CD are definitely in a death match. Frankly I think both will be canceled. If not, then CD will be canceled and HoD will move to Fridays – and die there. But IF it gets a third season, it might get a fourth for syndication reasons.

BATB is still at .90 which gives it a shot. IF they continue the emphasis on the conspiracy and can claw back to .6-.7, it may survive. If it doesn’t, I think it will be either canceled or moved to Fridays – where it will die. It won’t get a third or fourth season for syndication because it won’t survive that long in season two. That’s pretty clear.

I don’t believe at this point that 90210 will get a final season. The ratings are just too low and it’s already at syndication numbers. Other than Pedowitz’ alleged predisposition – which if he has any brains he will override in this case – there’s no reason to renew it.

Nikita is safe for a fourth season for syndication reasons.

  • Dillan

    @Richard Steven Hack

TSC ended last year with a 0.87. B&TB having a 0.90 does not give it a “shot”.

  • DeanW

Why The CW doesn’t air any Comedies ?

  • v

Agreed CW new management is moving in towards genre shows, away from soaps.
    Carrie, soap and 80′s show.
HOD gets renewed for syndication, but it need 2 more seasons, so Friday might
    be its home.
Beauty will be moved away from VD slot, might get lower ratings.
