This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the CW Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

After two 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings to start 2013 for Beauty & The Beast I moved it up to "likely to be renewed". Now after a 0.6 and a 0.5, I'm moving it back to a "toss up" with Hart Of Dixie and The Carrie Diaries.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

-
From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@DeaW – The CW hasn’t had luck with comedies and their last 2 brushoffs, The Game and Everbody Hates Chris were cancelled in May 2009. Chris got a nice sendoff at least while The Game was picked up by BET and is now is BET’s highest rated comedy, go figure. They said a couple of years ago that they were open to the idea but right now their main focus is on dramas.

Why does everyone think Cult wuld get renewed for midseason if it was renewed again? The CW hasn’t scheduled a sophomore drama for mideason since Reaper and if Cult got renewed then they would want it on their fall schedule.

Hart of Dixie and Nikita are safe as per CW’s syndication rule. Bill, while ratings are all at the same level for Nikita, Hart of Dixie, Beauty and the Beast and Carrie Diaries, keep in mind that CW has never cancelled a drama after 2 or 3 full seasons, that puts both Nikita and HOD at an advantage. Most can say well HOD is two seasons away, well if CW sucked up 2 seasons, they can probably live with 2 more. CW wants as many originals back next season if they air 10 hours of programming. No ANTM leaves room for 3 new dramas and 7 returning.

Everyone says 90210’s numbers are too horrible to be considered for a final season and at this point even I would have to agree but I do believe somewhere sometime at CBS/CW headquarters there is going to be a discussion and they will find a way to bring it back. Even if its on Fridays, the same way Gossip Girl got a final season. I wouldnt be shocked if 90210 got axed, but I’d be a little surprised.

  • ADH

Most likely 90210 and the Carrie Diaries* will be canceled, BATB renewed and paired with Nikita, and Hart Of Dixie* maybe renewed…*or transferred to ABC or ABC Family since Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire production company (the producers of The OC, Gossip Girl, CHUCK, Hart Of Dixie, The Carrie Diaries, and Cult) inked a deal w/ABC Studios (which doesn’t deal w/the CW) within the past month.

Plus I think Pedowitz is skewing the network in a more supernatural (and male) audience by shying away from the female skewing shows like former CW executive Dawn Ostroff perferred, in an effort to transform (& save) the network.

  • RockStarz

    @Dan:

Because Cult will never have more than 13 episodes in one season. Mark Pedowitz said last year, they don’t want to do the same mistakes like they with Ringer, because of that, all “hardcore serialized” shows are getting a half-season and that will be aired without breaks. [like cable]

  • KT

I am a huge HoD fan, but if it’s going to be renewed only to be shipped to Fridays, I’d rather have them just cancel it outright. I have never watched a show that airs on Friday and would not start doing so, even if my beloved Hart ends up there. If that’s what they do, it’ll be one less viewer for the CW, since that’s the only show on the entire network I watch.

Mondays 8 TOMORROW PEOPLE 9 OXYGEN

    Tuesdays 8 SELECTION 9 CULT

    Wednesdays 8 ARROW 9 SUPERNATURAL

Thursdays 8 VAMPIRE DIARIES 9 THE ORIGINALS

Fridays 8 NIKITA 9 HART OF DIXIE

    Midseason: Hundred

Canceled: Carrie, 90210 (give additional 4 episode order to finish out in June with current season as series finale), Beauty and the Beast.

*** I read the pilots that are ordered for CW and of course I’m just going by what I’m reading and seems most appealing from the synopsis only***

In regards to the 4 pilots, On Mondays and Tuesdays I thought the new shows could be self starters as Arrow and Vampire Diaries were right out the gate at 8. Hopefully word of mouth spreads that CW is revamping its image and the shows itself bring buzz to the network that has been struggling since the network began in 2006-07 season. It will be easy for new shows on Monday Nights to make improvements over this years shows (Carrie, 90210, and gossip girl).

Tuesdays of course I’m going on a leap of faith Cult will be a stable show and if so it seems Selection would be a good fit as a leadin.

On Wednesday My first thought was Arrow and Supernatural are strong shows that compliment eachother but aren’t dependent on eachother for viewers so why not benefit from these two shows on different nights to help build a stronger network. But I came to the conclusion that these 2 shows should stay together, don’t fix what isn’t broken, I say. I think this b/c of recent history. Secret Circle bombed with VD #1 show leadin, Beauty is failing too, Nikita started off ok but couldn’t maintain strong numbers, not to mention vd didn’t need a leadin. So Arrow the #2 show should stay with the #3 SuperNaturaL!!!

Thursdays.. At first I was going to put Originals on a different night. I thought too much of VD in one night would get boring for fans. But with recent history of shows bombing why not put a spinoff show that is the sister show of VD. Nothing else has worked so why not..

Fridays. Nikita at 8 because its numbers are better in this timeslot than at 9 where grimm is direct competition of viewers interested in action or supernatural like genres. Hart of Dixie at 9 where it will continue its stable success and continue to a Season 4 where both shows will get syndication. If both these shows could get 0.5s and 0.6 on Fridays it wouldn’t be a loss at all for CW considering most shows pull these numbers on Mon, Tues, and Thursdays at 9. So CW wouldn’t be disappointed with these two shows on Fridays pulling these numbers. Hart of Dixie would be wasted as a leadin on weekdays it would look better on Fridays if maintaining current numbers.

This is all for fun so no one get their panties in a twist we are all entitled to our own opinions :) so just chill out and if u don’t agree make up your own schedule

  • Kavyn

@Ashley I would put HOD at 9pm instead, since it seems to have a fairly regular and consistent fanbase. If you put HOD at 8pm then you’re basically screwing whatever new show is airing after it. EO and soon-to-be Cult will be proof of that. Otherwise your schedule makes the most sense (although I’d maybe replace BTB with Cult if Cult does better).

  • halloween

Supernatural could be held for mid season to launch new show after Arrow

  • Ashley

@ Angellica..I’m with you. Please renew The Secret Circle. I caught the series too late when it went on Netflix. It’s a great series. Much better than TCD and TBatB.

  • Tom

Question: Are there any online sources that list T14-18 ratings for primetime network shows? I understand that isn’t the “money” demo, but I’m curious about how popular shows like HOD, TCD and B&B are with that age group.

  • Claudia

Just to get you and idea of who is watchng BATB, everybody that is not TVD audience!!!! So wherever they move BATB we will follow…. having TVD is not good to anybody Im tired of reading the same BS, the reason why Arrow and SPN are holding the same audience is bec Arrow (new show) brought in old fans of SPN and they kept the audience, its much better when they have a new show before an old show! OMG, and all your theories with shows bombing at .5 or .4 and wanting the CW to keep them is just biased, at the end of the day the CW is gonna do what is G4B and they wont care who is upset or not, the less audiences they upset the better! So we only have to wait for May and see who holds the best audiences and give more money to the CW…

  • Mark

@Micheal aka Bondoel, TV guide is not accurate.Deadline is more accurate as they have inside info that the others don’t.In fact, Deadline was first to say SC ,Ringer Likley cancelled and Nikita and HoD Likley renewals just before upronts last Ma just before thier info became true & reality..Also, most sites have Nikita as toss up/bubble/could go either just like last season because of ratings only.

  • herpderp

Bondoel is back yet again? Hooray for brain-dead Nikita trolls!

  • feinn

Too early to comment on cw bubble shows…wait for spring fall and the quality of pilots. .for decisions…but 90210 fate could be soon

  • Eric_Philly

Teenage dramas aren’t working out for them? This must be what Nostradamus felt like.

  • Jane Elliot

I’m really curious as to how Nikita’s going to do starting this week. It has a lot more episodes left than most shows this season and it looks like it’s going to be running without interruption until May.

  • Doug

Despite the ratings failures, I say that this has been a good season for the CW. They got 1 more building block, and now have three solid series (SPN, TVD and Arrow) that they can use to build nights. HoD is doing well enough. If Nikita does survive, they then have at least 1 hour for every night of the week, 3 strong, which is more than they had at the beginning of this season

  • BPKK

Cult’s reviews were better than I thought they’d be given some of the first impression write-ups from last summer with some calling it the worst of the pilots. Will be interesting to see the ratings tomorrow, but even if it does well by CW standards, it would still only be a 13 episode show next season from what I’ve read.

Does anyone know why Carrie Diaries was only given a 13 episode first season order? Was it due to the cost of shooting in NY? If the ratings had been better would the network have ordered additional episodes for this season or in order to have a chance at getting a second season and paying for the cost of shooting 22 episodes in NY, did the show have to get Arrow like ratings?

Since everyone is predicting that Nikita will be renewed for syndication regardless of its ratings, which don’t look so bad now compared to 90210 and TCD today, why didn’t the CW just announce its renewal along with the other 3 last week? Under what circumstances would Nikita not be renewed at this point?

If they don’t announce this season as 90210’s last, can the network “renew” it for just two episodes to be aired as a movie at the end summer or during one of the breaks or do the actors/producers have some minimum episode order in their contracts?

HoD I can see both arguments that it was given a second year to grow its audience but didn’t and that being stuck with a 0.5/0.6 show for another two seasons won’t do the network any favors, but then Emily and Carrie show that they could spend money launching a new show and get nothing better or even worse.

Will be interesting to see if Beauty bounces back this week. Entertainment Weekly picked Thursday’s episode as the Best of the night, another critic called the episode “enthralling” and apparently the screeners were sent out with a few “do not reveals” so have to see if Valentine’s Day absentees and others will check back in. Since the CW wanted this show to be more episodic, I guess they should expect some fluctuations in ratings although I assume they would rather the show went from 1.0-0.8 or even 0.9-0.7 rather than 0.7-0.5. If it comes down to Beauty, Cult or Carrie, I guess Beauty might have the edge if international sales factor in. Of those 3 only Beauty was picked up in the lucrative UK market. This article said that Beauty was subject to heavy bidding and got a three season commitment from its UK buyer http://www.tvwise.co.uk/2013/01/2012-2013-acquisitions-41-bskyb-wb-nbcu/ Still don’t know why they didn’t move Beauty to Tuesdays after Hart and try Cult after Vampire. Although I don’t see that Cult was even picked up by a Canadian broadcaster.

  • Diana

I love love love LOVE Beauty And The Beast!! It’s the best new show ever!! It even won a People’s Choice!! & it deserves season two!! I don’t want it to be cancelled! It can’t end up like Moonlight did! So for those of you who think CW will cancel BATB, well………read this below,

    NOT……GONNA….HAPPEN!!!!!!!

    HEAR ME ROAR PEOPLE!!!!!!

  • Hades

Based on early script reviews front runners for pick up in terms of new shows are The Selection, The Originals, Oxygen and The Tomorrow People.

Company Town was aparently the weakest of the scripts and Reign too off brand due to the adult content that would need to be dialled down if the show is going to make it past pilot stage. No news on the others.

Deadline I belive reported that The Tomoorrow People is being touted as a partner for Arrow.
