Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 14, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
90210   0.54
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.65
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.81
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.83
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.90
Supernatural renewed 1.36
Arrow renewed 1.50
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.76

This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the CW Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

After two 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings to start 2013 for Beauty & The Beast I moved it up to "likely to be renewed". Now after a 0.6 and a 0.5, I'm moving it back to a "toss up" with Hart Of Dixie and The Carrie Diaries.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Does anyone know why Carrie Diaries was only given a 13 episode first season order?

Because most shows are only given a 13 episode order (or less) for their first season…

Cult is shown on CTV2 in Canada, as well as the CW for those of us that have CW on our cable.

My vote for renewal goes to Beauty and the Beast, then Hart of Dixie. (Since Arrow and TVD are already renewed!!) I JUST started watching BATB and it is FAST becoming a favourite! What I really, really don’t understand is how Nikita can survive another season. I watched most of season 1, and a few of season 2 but the storyline is so old and tiring I just can’t waste my time on it anymore. For me it felt like I had already seen the ep, even though it was new, just because it was SO much like the one before it. It just goes in circles. It’s actually my fear for BATB, that the Muirfield storyline never gets resolved and it keeps circling around without a fresh plot. But so far I’m really enjoying BATB, so i REALLY hope it gets renewed. I think it will, since it did just get best new drama! That has to mean something right? Anyway, in my opinion, giving Nikita a third chance is poor management. Season two was supposed to find an audience, clearly it hasn’t with a .65. Time to cut your losses CW, get a clue.

Cw will cancel hart of Dixie and keep Carrie diaries. They don’t need hart of dixie to make money. They have nikkia. Carrie diaries is executive produce by josh Swartz . Just because he married Rachel bilson friend. If they going to cancel it. Do it already.

Ashley thank u see cw allot of people did’nt have your network so they had to try other ways to watch it n even the ones who were able to watch cw were more well over a million n higher than B&TB and the fan base is still rising for the secret circle if you would have renewed it do u realize how much money u would be making this year knwing that supernatural,TVD, n arrow are doing very well renewing the secret circle would bring in even more money on top of that

The people who think because BatB has the TVD lead it that it should get higher ratings are not smart at all. First of all, the two shows aren’t related content wise. Second of all, TVD fans have a huge online presence that makes them want to discuss the show after it airs. Three, Thursday night at 9 PM is the most competitive night on television, with five one hour shows being aired. Fourth, the CW doesn’t just use crappy Nielsen data to determine whether a show on its network should get a second season.

  • Tom

@ J Waddaya mean “TVD fans have a huge online presence that makes them want to discuss the show after it airs”? I think you Beastials need to get your stories straight because a bunch of you have been bragging here about how great your social media is. Comments like “the CW doesn’t use crappy Nielsen data” and “it did just get best new drama! That has to mean something right?” pretty well confirm that you’re a bunch of adolescents who should go back to Facebook, Twitter or whatever other part of the Blogosphere you came from. You’re out of PCA contests to rig, so it’s time you understood that primetime television is all about the adults and they’re not watching. B&B is not on Nick or Disney. So cuddle up with your teddy bears and swoon if you must, but kindly give us a break and stop posting your repetitive inane remarks. If you need something useful to do, try organizing an online campaign to get higher pay for babysitters.

  • J

Tom, you’re not very smart either. The fact that TVD fans like to discuss the show after it airs affecting ratings for shows after it is irrelevant to whether BatB fans have a social media presence. And it is a fact that CW doesn’t “just use” CW data. Just because I think it’s crappy doesn’t mean what I stated wasn’t true. Frankly, I don’t really care about the PCAs, but the latter shows that BatB does have strong online fan support. Because their fans may not have Nielsen boxes to plug in the numbers that translate to prime time viewing numbers doesn’t change this fact. I personally think BatB needs to gain more male viewership with more conspiracy oriented plot lines. The strong female demographic it maintains based on the love story simply isn’t enough.

Get over your vindictive BatB infatuation because your precious TSC got cancelled.

  • Dillan

I don’t understand how B&TB fans are thinking why their show should be renewed. TSC was cancelled last year because it couldn’t keep it’s ratings from its lead in. B&TB has the exact same problem (except, TSC got BETTER ratings). TSC getting better ratings and cancelled, surely means that B&TB will also be cancelled.

  • Danielle

@Tom…..I doubt I need to point out what a babbling baffoon you are but you do sound like a complete moron, so maybe I do…?! First of all I only wish I was still an adolescent, ahhh, to be so carefree again! Secondly J is right. TVD has a huge following and if you had half a clue you would know that, maybe try pulling your head out of your a$$ for a minute? Many of TVD fans take to twitter nad discussion boards after the show (I don’t, but many do) And speaking as an ADULT, avid viewer, I don’t give a rats behind what is before or after a show I’m watching. They can call it a lead in if they want, but if I don’t want to watch it, I’m not gonna! Just because it airs behind the networks top show does not make it a guaranteed hit. I don’t just watch any random show just because it’s on after one of my regular shows, I’m not a mouse in a cage, I have a mind of my own! It’s called turning the channel, or turning the TV off. Maybe next time, when you wake up, try getting out on the other side, you might be less of a jerk.

  • J

BatB to TSC comparisons are not entirely valid. Arrow to TSC comparisons are more valid. The only equivalence of BatB and TSC is that they shared the same time slot after TVD. TSC was the CW’s “it” show of last year like Arrow was this year. It received more promotion, publicity, cost more to produce because it was not a Canadian production, probably did sell as more overseas, and more was expected from it. BatB may not survive, but it won’t be due to the fact that it couldn’t garner the majority of Nielsen box ratings from its lead in.

  • Tom

@ J Princess, you really should see your guidance counselor about taking a remedial English course. Like the rest of your statements, the phrase “vindictive BatB infatuation” is nonsensical. According to Webster’s, “infatuation” means “an unreasoned passion or love”. That’s the opposite of vindictive. So, if you want to be like the grownups, learn what words mean before you use them.

BTW, dismissing critics of B&B as being “vindictive” TSC fans is another overused Bestial crutch. Over the last four episodes, B&B has dropped two demo points and approximately 400k adult viewers. I hate to burden you with facts, but it’s pretty clear from these numbers that large numbers of viewers are abandoning B&B. So, it doesn’t really matter what TSC fans say.

  • Dillan

With Cult flopping and getting a 0.3 for it’s premiere episode, it will be definitely be cancelled.

  • J

The statement is not nonsensical. It’s how I see you as behaving from your repetitive comments that are filled with the BatB show and fan denigration. And here’s a newsflash for you: words have multiple meanings. No one is “dismissing” what you say because you’re a vindictive loser. They’re simply pointing out the fact that you are.

  • Angellica .T.

TSC did way better last year than B&TB is doing im sorry buts its da truth n im honestly saying that in a nice way

  • Danielle

Thinking about it, until last week, I did not watch any back to back shows. There was ALWAYS a channel switch for me, or I watched nothing. Last week I watched my first ep of BATB following TVD. I will continue to do so, so The CW has managed to do what no other network has managed to do….get my ratings for two hours in a row. But I did’t watch it because it comes on after TVD, but because it was recomended to me. My point being, networks can plan stratigically with “lead-ins” all they want, but to me and probably a lot of other viewers it doesn’t mean squat. If Bones (being my absolute favourite show) can’t get me to watch it’s follow-up, nothing can.

  • Tom

@ Danielle I assume you’re referring (in your unfortunate guttural manner) about those retentionistas who are evaluating B&B’s chances for being renewed based on its performance relative to TCD. However, I never addressed that issue. I’m not a retentionista and never was. Thanks for sharing though.

  • lalinge

you really shouldn’t compare TSC and BATB. I think BATB does very well, even though last week’s ratings. i think HOD & BATB will be renewed. TCD & 90210 is over.

  • Charmed

How do you know Cult got a 0.3?

  • Alan

Guessing that with Cult’s crappy ratings, 90210 and The Carrie Diaries will be renewed.
