Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 14, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
90210   0.54
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.65
The Carrie Diaries :| :| :| 0.81
Hart Of Dixie :| :| :| 0.83
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.90
Supernatural renewed 1.36
Arrow renewed 1.50
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.76

This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the CW Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

After two 0.7 adults 18-49 ratings to start 2013 for Beauty & The Beast I moved it up to "likely to be renewed". Now after a 0.6 and a 0.5, I'm moving it back to a "toss up" with Hart Of Dixie and The Carrie Diaries.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Now that Cult has premiered, here are my final predictions:

Renew: Nikita, HoD, BaTB and Carrie
    Cancel: 90210, Cult
3 new shows in the fall (unless ANTM is also starting in the fall – can someone verify this? then toss up between BaTB and Carrie)

  • Jane

I am not a TATB fan but last season didn’t have any shows hitting 0.3 or 0.2 with any regularity. There’s a new low for all but the top 3 shows. Tatb will most likely be renewed, imo. Carrie Diaries might get a renewal but if they have any sense, they should take their chances on new shows. Could they possibly do any worse? Cult, TCD and 90210 should get the axe. All others stay.

  • Charmed

TCD is even more likely for renewal now!

  • Danielle

@Tom….WOW! The assumption that I was talking or reffering to you is a testament to your self appointed importance. Clearly you wish everyone to see you as a smart guy who knows what he’s talking about, but I assure you, your rude, ignorant remarks portray you as anything but. Go back to your dark corner and cry about how you were bullied when you were a kid and how you have no friends. And please don’t “assume” I care about what your opinion is, or want it for that matter! But if you want to stray from snotty attitude, why not try to participate in a conversation like a grown up? (Without feeling the need to insult people who’s opinion differ from your own!)

I think CW is done come 2015-2016 when affiliates contracts are up.I wonder if they’ll give back fri 9 pm to affiliates since they’re clearly not trying to put original programming after Nikita.Theyve not yet officially formally announced this 90210s final season(networks do that with vetran shows)& they’ll film the season finale in a couple weeks, I think it’ll be renewed.Nikita,HoD I think will be renewed too.I think Cult,Carrie Diaries & BatB will be cancelled.

  • Brandy

I think CW will try to syndicate 90210,VD,Nikita,HoD before closing their doors in 2015-2016.

  • Carl

I’m not sure whether it would be a great idea to move SPN with the assumption a new show will do great after Arrow. Arrow is still in its first season and has had a little ratings fluctuation; there’s no way of knowing if it will power any show that airs after it. TVD certainly doesn’t. I think there is a certain synergy between Arrow and SPN, at least for now.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Dillan: “TSC ended last year with a 0.87. B&TB having a 0.90 does not give it a “shot”.”

What part of “shot” don’t you get? It means a chance, however slight.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Now that Cult has debuted to a .3 (and excuses like previous online airing don’t change that), it’s clear that the CW will cancel it.

So we’re back to the status quo. 90210 has absolutely NO reason to be renewed except Pedowitz’s preference and that makes no sense, so it will be canceled.

BATB has too low ratings in its season one to survive UNLESS it can claw its way back up and CONSISTENTLY to .6-.7 which I thoroughly doubt it can do. More likely the “spring drop” effect will push it down to .4. .5 will not be enough to save it. If it gets renewed and sent to Fridays, it will do .4 or worse, which is not enough to save it on Fridays. There’s no syndication value in season one. So it will be canceled.

The Carrie Diaries has too low ratings in season one, just like BATB. It’s doomed.

HoD has two seasons in so it has a shot at getting another two – on Fridays after Nikita. Personally I think they should cancel it, too, but we’ll see. It’s likely to drop its ratings on Friday, as well.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Brandy: “I think CW will try to syndicate 90210,VD,Nikita,HoD before closing their doors in 2015-2016.”

    That statement makes no sense.

First, 90210 is already at syndication numbers. There’s absolutely no GOOD reason to renew it for another season at this point.

Nikita is already on track for syndication next year. Its renewal for a season three pretty much proves it will get a season four and it will have enough episodes.

TVD will be at syndication numbers end of this season and it’s doing well so its renewal is certain regardless of syndication.

HoD is the only questionable one. If renewed, the studio might sell it for two seasons a la Nikita. But it will be moved to Fridays behind Nikita where it will probably do worse than Nikita. There’s also no evidence BEFORE it actually gets renewed that the studio expects syndication to justify two more seasons. Nikita HAS that evidence since it WAS renewed for season three.

Your prediction that the CW will shut down by 2015-2016 is so speculative as to be worthless. The network could go on for another ten years absent any financial evidence to the contrary.

  • Danielle

What’s the point of syndicating a show like Nikita (spending all that time and effort as a network) when it’s ratings are worse than new shows like BATB or TCD? Nikita has had 3 seasons to take off and it’s still struggling to survive. Do they really think they can sell it and be lucritive, when everyone knows it had one foot in the grave at all times? BATB has had some good (and some bad) ratings but it’s in it’s first season, and as a viewer I find it’s really starting to get it’s groove. I’m not trying to be rude to Nikita fans but I honestly wonder, what’s the scense in syndicating a show that is struggling so much?

  • Tom

@ Danielle I believe you’re referring to you’re diatribe timestamped at 8:01 AM. I was referring to the earlier diatribe timestamped at 7:01 AM. That’s the one specifically addressed to me. Hence, the specific reference to you’re nasty tone. Since you can’t keep track of your postings, I suggest you post less. Or, better yet, not at all. There’s already enough name calling occurring here.

  • Brandon

Nikita had better ratings then BATB & TCD in its first season. Plus right now in its 3rd season the show is basically pulling the same ratings as BATB and TCD & its on a Friday night. What would be the point to renew BATB & TCD if its ratings are horrible now? Most likely they will drop even more next season. Its pointless.

  • Brandy

RSH, please stop commenting on my posts.I don’t like you.Yes, 90210 has enough episodes and VD will at the end of this season but that’s different than actually getting/having a deal.Im also not the only one saying CW won’t be around after 2015-2016 when affiliate contracts are up .You can’t tell me you expect it go on ten years with only 3 shows getting 1.0 or better and a lot of shows getting 0.4 and lower and a few shows have been/are under a million viewers(GG,90210,Nikita for a few episodes,Cult). It’s my opinion and I don’t care what you think.I think your opinions are worthless but I don’t attack you for them or hate on and bash shows cause I don’t like them like you do.Yes, CW makes money from syndication,Hulu,Netflix,International sales, DVD/merchandise sales, iTunes ect but that can’t and won’t carry them forever and the majority of networks income is from ad revenue, which gets lower for CW every year as ratings decline.VD,Arrow can’t& won’t carry or save the network forever and SPN is on its last legs.

  • feinn

Tvline upgraded hod to a safe bet.

  • Danielle

@ Brandon I follow the two Spoiler TV ratings charts, which do you follow?

  • JJA

Now we know how Cult did ….. Ouch!

So, next fall, the CW will have:
    3 new shows,
5 returning shows (VD, Sup, Arrow, Nikita and HOD), and
    1-2 reality shows.

In other words, TCD, B&TB, 90210 and Cult will be canceled.

  • Ramona

They need to revamp the network, and that means getting rid of the teen shows that are not getting the ratings to justify keeping them (i.e. cancel 90210 and Carrie Diaries).

BatB fits in, at least, with the direction they are going in, so might as well move it to Friday with Nikita and make a female-action-lead night out of it.

Hart of Dixie has a relatively stable fanbase, so I think they will get the Nikita 2-for-syndication deal. They might as well stay on Tuesdays so that the audience that does watch will find it.

Re-brand Monday as a sci-fi night with new shows.
Make Tuesday the quirky yet adult lady drama night.
Keep Wednesday as Action Boys Night.
Make Thursday an all-Vampires, all-the-time night.
    Make Fridays Action Girls Night.

  • Ramona

Looking at the pilots (and depending on the quality, of course), I would go with:

Sci-fi Mondays: The Hundred and The Tomorrow People
    Adult Drama Tuesdays: Company Town
    Vampire Thursdays: the Originals (obviously)

    save the Selection for mid-season

  • Jean

They should renew B&TB, it’s got a big fan base with a wide age range so it appeals to a lot of people. The time slot sucks, though! Give it a chance!
