Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- February 14, 2013):

This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the Fox Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

Once Ben & Kate was yanked from Fox's Tuesday night schedule, both New Girl and The Mindy Project ratings moved upwards. New Girl was never in danger, but The Mindy Project's prospects have elevated enough to make it "likely to be renewed".

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Fox is in some serious trouble, if they’re allowing shows in the 1-2.0 range to be renewed. That’s NBC-like territory. I say they should cancel everything from Mindy down (including Mindy).

  • Ted Craig

“Once Ben & Kate was yanked from Fox’s Tuesday night schedule, both New Girl and The Mindy Project ratings moved upwards.”

Was it Ben & Kate getting axed or Apt. 23 and the moving of Happy Endings?

  • Dude

So your advice is to cancel The Cleveland Show and Touch? Well duh. I really hope they don’t cancel The Mindy Project though.

  • PurpleDrazi

The picture painted by all those green smilies isn’t quite as rosy as it would have you believe. Fox needs a hit soon!

speaking of smilies, did you guys get new icons? They look different.

  • AA

Renew The Cleveland Show and air it instead of Family Guy on Sundays in the summer.

  • MichaelChickless

Fringe doesn’t look so bad after seeing the ratings this season for Touch.

  • jimmers

Mindy Project is flat out the best of the new season. I’m so sick of New Girl though now.

  • Dan S

After last night Fox should officially renew The Following. That show is downright the best new show of the year.

  • Tim

Shouldn’t Touch be listed as a Friday show? Not that it will make much of a difference.

  • Justin

How the hell was Bob’s Burger’s Renewed???? The show is AWFUL.

Touch & the Cleveland show are heading toward the bear’s belly

Mindy may just make it to S02

  • Jam

Touch getting a 0.7 in demo is CW territory. I wonder how tolerant FOX is…

  • gerry

good for mindy. haven’t watched it but i’ve still been rooting for its renewal.

  • Glue

The Mindy Project Is HILARIOUS. Happy To see it Now Likely To Be Renewed! :D

  • RG-X

I don’t get it – but okay – good for FOX

  • SJ

Touch and Cleveland cancelled, everything else renewed. But boy, I don’t see any longevity in Mindy, Glee keeps crashing and Bones is headed for what is widely believed to be its final season. And The Following can’t run for 22 episodes a season due to Kevin Bacon’s commitments. Not to mention that Idol isn’t strong enough anymore to get them out of trouble every spring. The Superbowl should guarantee them at least second place next year but after that, it looks like it’s back to the drawing board for Fox.

  • rob60990

I can totally see Glee moving to Fridays next year.

  • Sarah

I hope that’s the case and not Bones. Especially if it will be Bones’ final season.

  • omabin

I think Mindy is a true tossup, I don’t know what to compare it with for renewal purposes. It could easily come back, it could very easily be dumped. Next season, Fox needs to develop new dramas. Their only utility player, Bones, is ending eventually and Glee has one more year left in it, and only because it is on Fox. Raising Hope will get to syndication and die, and I doubt Mindy gets there. New Girl is the only thing FOX has developed in the last years and even that is not doing brilliantly. The Following is doing very well, but it is the type of “limited event” thing that will not save FOX. They need stuff that can produce more episodes per year and can be used where it needs. They need to go heavy on dramas and stop wasting so many resources on reality, which is declining big time IMO.

    My schedule:

    New Drama

    New Drama
    New Girl
    The Mindy Project

    The X-Factor/Idol
    New Comedy

    The X-Fator

    Raising Hope
    Raising Hope [1 hour episodes]
    Kitchen Nightmares or another reality

Then, have one out of Glee/Monday’s New Drama/Tuesday’s New Drama be sent to fridays and replace it with the following at midseason. I also think that new girl should be following x factor and idol to get more eyeballs since it has a lot of growth potential IMO, but unfortunately that would leave a mess on Tuesdays, I cannot reasonably move it.

  • omabin

Also, where I wrote the mindy project, it could easily be a new comedy. Or Mindy should get a 13 eps renewal to see how it does, with a new comedy ready to take over in case it doesn’t grow.
