This is a special "short week" holiday edition of the Fox Index, having been written the evening of Friday, February 15 with ratings through only February 14.

Once Ben & Kate was yanked from Fox's Tuesday night schedule, both New Girl and The Mindy Project ratings moved upwards. New Girl was never in danger, but The Mindy Project's prospects have elevated enough to make it "likely to be renewed".

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    I really hope “The Mindy Project” is here to stay! By far, my FAVORITE new show on Fox. In fact, that’s the only show I watch on Fox, besides New Girl. I never understood why no one ever tuned into “MP”… It’s a great show!

  • spin

    The Mindy Project is the only show I tune into on FOX- hope it’s here to stay for a long time. LOVE it. :)

    @Justin

    I know it’s just your opinion but I’d like to power drive you into a sharp fence for it.

    Bobs Burgers is top of the line humor.

  • Patrick Ausgewahlt

    The Cleveland Show does equal and sometimes better ratings as repeats and originals.It did fine in the post Simpsons, pre Family Guy slot. Change it back. And FOX has at least 16 episodes left of The Cleveland Show right now. I can see it do a Summer run

  • SJ

    @omabin

    Actually, Glee would likely get renewed on all big four networks right about now. They all have shows that are in a similar ratings boat (Nashville, The Good Wife, Chicago Fire) and they’re all in serious contention for next season.

    As for Mindy, I can easily see Fox giving it 13 episodes and then ditching it mid-season when it inevitably fails to grow. Whatever they stick between Raising Hope and New Girl isn’t likely to do well either so I guess Hell’s Kitchen will be back on Tuesdays at 8pm mid-season leading into New Girl and a new mid-season comedy, while Raising Hope moves to Fridays and airs one-hour blocks until Fox burns through the season…

  • Rare

    It’ll be interesting to see what Fox does with the comedy block next year. Their big investment in comedy development seems to suggest they want a full block again, but where and how? Can they really go back to the Raising Hope at 8, New Girl at 9 and new comedies in between formula? It didn’t work all that well this season.

    If they don’t have a full block, then I’m still not sure what they could do as they don’t have much that could provide a good lead-in to the comedy hour. Glee isn’t strong enough anymore, neither is X Factor…

  • Rare

    As for Mindy, I think it’ll get a 13-episode second season, and will either serve as a mid-season replacement or will get a “test run” in the fall to see if it can last, then will get a back 9 if it does well.

  • The End

    @omabin

    I really can’t see Raising Hope being a Friday show on Fox. I can’t see the show going past the 4th season either, so dumping on Friday seems logical but I just can’t see Fox doing that.

    @Justin
    How the hell was Bob’s Burger’s Renewed?

    It does better than FOX’s scripted average and FOX will have no trouble selling it into syndication?

  • Dan

    @Ted Craig – Maybe both, the less comedy competition has helped Mindy Project, especially when HE was been renewed and Go On and The New Normal were in repeats. The good retention and uptick from The Mindy Project makes it a guarantee renewal. FOX loves the show and I believe FOX would rather have 3 returning comedies then just two like last season and the season before.

    If FOX brings back The Following and The Mindy Project while cancelling Touch and The Cleveland show then they can consider this season somewhat of a success.

  • StevenD

    I really need to catch up on The Following, only saw the first 2 episodes. Might give Mindy a chance too.

    Touch and The Cleveland Show are most likely gone (not sure about the second one cause of syndication money)

  • Dan

    @Ultima – That’s right, Bob’s Burger has retained better of The Simpsons than The Cleveland show had so out with the old in with the newish.

    @SJ – I think if FOX renews it, it will probably be a deal for 22 episodes. NBC produces the series and usually if a show gets a second season and deals are made for a “full” season then the network would have to pay money to the production company should they cut the order. Even 22 episodes isn’t too bad, I expect the show to continue through at least Nay 2014.

  • Dan

    @StevenD – The only reason Cleveland Show is done is because it takes a lot longer to produce a season of an animated series then a live action comedy and the time has passed to FOX to renew the show for another season. Also all current episodes of the series are scheduled to air through May and FOX has a midseason animated comedy slated to air next Spring along with the current 8-10 animated comedies slated to air in their slots. The show has already been sold into syndication for its 88 episodes so its done, although I’m not sure why FOX wouldn’t push for 13 more to get it over 100.

  • Rebecca

    I just watch Bob’s Burgers and the Tuesday comedies, so I’m glad they’re doing okay.

  • StevenD

    @Dan

    Yeah thats what i meant, it is on Adult Swim already, and I’m pretty sure it has been sold to TBS too, why not milk it and get more money out of it?

  • Dan

    @StevenD – No idea, maybe FOX was waiting on the ratings on this season and they feel its cheaper not to produce another season. I personally would have though.

  • Dave

    Fox are in real trouble if the Mindy Project is getting renewed.

  • Pacrobe

    To be fair with Touch, it should have a “(F)” next to it since it’s shown on Fridays (like Fringe, etc)

  • karin

    Fox unable to win a night without TV real singing? Behind ABC and CBS yesterday and happy,lol

  • omabin

    @SJ,

    I agree about Glee, raw-numbers wise. But 1)Those shows are all 10pm shows, so ratings are normally lower; 2) They don’t air after American Idol, which, regardless of the way we see it, is still very very big. None of this matters for renewal but they matter to assess the show’s strenght. It is the same argument that I make for Elementary over at CBS. Raw numbers wise, yes, it does okay, but I don’t think it is strong when you consider age, promotion, lead-in, competition, etc. And these factors, imo, do matter to try to predict the life spam of a show. In any case, I don’t see Glee surviving next season, unless FOX has a season even worse than the present one, which I think is hard.

    @The End,
    I agree. I was not trying to predict what was going to happen, just what I think should happen. Raising Hope should go to fridays so that fox has room to develop new comedies, but I don’t see them doing, at least not starting in the fall (in midseason, it is possible)
